Just curious to what folks are using. I'm running Rotella 5w-40 now with a Supertech 7317 filter.

I RAN,,, Rotella 15w-40 Synthetic in my Connie/Farm Tractors/Farm Truck/Combine/Pick-ups/Lawn Mowers/VW Diesel TDI Jetta...
I even tried it on my Captain Crunch but it dulled the crunch sound,,, and I decided to stop that test...
After break-in,,, it will go into my yet to be delivered 2005 ST... 8^)

Rotella Syn here... I have some OEM filters I got from HDL still. I've looked for the supertech filters at Wally-world and that particular shelf is always empty...
I can visualize a hoard of swarming ST Owners, just like the Capital One credit card commercials, advancing towards the automotive section....
.... and overtaking every remaining filter as if it were a healthy human cell being invaded by a viscious virus....

Being the heathen that I am, Wal-Mart Super Tech 10w40 works just fine for me....

I use Castrol ActEvo semi synthetic oil. It's available at my Honda dealer. I've been using Napa Gold 1358 oil filters, but I'm thinking of switching to the Pure One from Fred Meyer.

Rotella and Supertech , might switch over to Mobile 1 (red cap) come spring..

Mobil 1 15-50 Red cap and M1-110 filter in the ST1100 and the R6. Have run it in the R6 since 1st oil change - now has 17,000 miles.

I bought used ST1100 about 6 month ago, the prior owner used Castrol (unknown spec), the clutch slipped under WOT shifts over 5,000 RPM.
Changed to Honda GN4 20W50 (dino), it got better.
Changed to Honda GN4 10w40 (dino), it got better, can't detect clutch slipage.
Changed to Shell Rotella T synthetic 5w40, can't detect clutch slipage. I wanted a synthetic. It is $12.84 per gallon at WalMart, easy to get and is about the same price as the Honda dino.
The manual does not mention a 5w-40. Rotella is not Energy Conserving (EC). Unfortunately, it is not MA rating, probably due to the high ash content. They seem more interested in selling to diesel fleets, with 1,000,000 mile before overhaul engines. If my bike was under warranty, I would use Honda GN4 10w40 or Mobil 1 MX4T, both MA certified. Mobil 1 red cap 15w50 is also not EC but was ruled out due to the 70 ppm of moly, it is not MA certified and is too thick at both ends.
Joe
PS I use the Honda filters, got 6 of them with the bike.

Ran GN4
Ran Shell Rotella but had clutch slip sometimes
Went back to GN4 but it still slipped
Ran Mobil 10w30 Gold Cap, clutch slip went away
Went back to GN4, clutch slip returned
Went to 15w50 Gold Cap, no clutch slip
Staying with 15w50 or at least Mobil Gold cap.
Use to run the Purolator Pure One PL14610 but went back to the OEM filter since Purolator does not recommend running it in the ST.

As I posted in the other thread, oil is good. Following the min.recommendations in the manual and changing it at the 8k mile mark will result in a 200k (pretty sure) engine life expectancy. To quote Don F, Go Ride!!!!!!!!!

Did my first oil change yesterday as well. Used Rotella T dino $5.88 gallon at AutoZone and the Purolator Pure One 14610 filter $5.97. The Rotella T Synthetis was only $8 per gallon. ($4 cheaper than Walmart :) )
Found this site to be great for instructions. Took the laptop down to the garage and went to work.

Greetings all! I'm a new ST owner and likewise new to this board. I've used this board as my exclusive online source for research on the ST.
Thanks everyone, this is a great source of information.
ON THE SUBJECT:
I was told to hold off switching to Synthetic until my bike had at least 5,000 miles on it. That was my RC. I was also told 10W40 was better than the 15W50, mostly performance reasons. My RC has 32,000 miles on it now and it's still performing like new. Been running MX4T 10W40 and OEM filter.
I just bought an '03 ST. The previous owner was running Mobile 1 and the Purolator. The day I bought the bike I changed the oil to Mobile 1 and the filter to OEM.
I still have my RC and love every inch of it, do track days, Sunday rides, etc.
With that said, I can't believe how fun this ST is. I'm looking forward to the Honda Hoot. The ST will make it a very enjoyable trip, much more comfortable than the '02 trip when I road the RC, stock seat, from Jax, Florida. OUCH!!!

Vegetable oil w/ some coffee grounds to prevent clutch slippage.
Not sure at this point what I'm going to run. Pulled in last night w/ 602 on her (not too bad for one week with work and somewhat limited time to ride) and am going to pick up the oil for the 600 mile service today (picked up filter at the dealer yesterday). I've not seen Amsoil in the store but I was thinking of running Rotella T Synthetic, Mobil 1 Synthetic, or possibly Castrol ActEvo Motorcycle oil. Am also pondering Repsol motorcycle oil. Any input on Repsol?
How often do you all change your oil? I changed the Daytona's every 2k miles...the OM for the ST states that the next oil change isn't required until 8k? I change my car's oil every 3k so I don't know that I'm comfortable keeping the oil in the bike for that long w/o change. What's ya'lls input?

sticking with Honda HP-4 ... semi-synth ... no moly.
used to be a Mobil1 red cap guy till they changed their formulation ...
and ... my bike CAN read (!). ... it has a computer built-in .... :D
Is the Mobile mx4t still available?
Sure it is. Might be hard to get in some places. I currently use M1 15W50 Goldcap. Works very good.

Purolator Pure One filter and Mobil Delvac synthetic. Oil still has a nice golden hue to it when changed at 8,000 mile intervals. I switched to Rotella T synthetic once on my '03. Didn't like it - thought the clutch was too sloppy. Changed back. Been with it ever since.

Golden Spectro, 10W40 with honda filters every 3K.
Ran GS in my 81 Wing since it was new. After 146K, it still has great compression and does not use any oil between changes. Hence, I did not change brand or weight. It's a little pricey, but fluids are cheap insurance!

I use Mobil MX4T with Honda OEM filter. Works great for me.
I buy the MX4T at my local Wal-Mart for ~$7.50/qt. (Hint: Don't look in the automotive motor oil section... look where they sell motorcycle helmets, gear, etc. That's where they keep the motorcycle oil!)

I may just be hitting it lucky, but my local AutoZone store (I live in a very small town) usually has a display of MX4T and Valvoline motorcycle-specific oil sitting right at the entrance with a sizable discount (usually something like $4/quart). I asked one time about this and he said 'they just send us a bunch to sell at this price'. Go figure. I just keep buying the stuff!

I have yet to find MX4T at any auto store unfortunately (or any motorcycle oil). The price on MX4T is all over. I've seen it range from $7.54 at Walmart to $12.50 at a cycle store.

Has anyone noticed the difference between the owner's manual and the service manual's recommended oil ? Owner's says "...or equivalent motorcycle oil", the service manual says "...or equivalent motor oil". The difference is about $2.00 a qt.

Extra Virgin Olive Oil, preferably with an Italian brand name. Peanut oil works well too. :D :bsflag:
Actually, Mobil-1, 10w-30 with the gold cap and no energy conserving additives.

Service manual is what the shop uses... and Bygdawg has it right:
Mobil 1 Fully Synthetic 15W-50 for my girl.
for both our ST1100 and the ST1300
Mark
I use massage oil (vanilla scented) and a converted coffee can containing a roll of Charmin for the filter. The massage oil is great to use later after it has been warmed up by the engine.
I just changed my oil and put in the Mobil MX-4T and man did my bike love that! As soon as it started circulating, everything seemed to smooth out. The longer I run it, the smoother it runs. Maybe just my imagination but WOW!
