What's the best thing for windshields? Also, is there anything that will remove very fine spider web scratches from cleaning with paper towels?

Thanks in advance,

I place a wet towel on the windshield after a trip to soak the little 'buggers' then slowly wipe in vertical strokes. I've use Plexus as well as the Honda Polish and it seems to clear the shield up some. I'll take a small can of Honda polish on trips but usually it's too dirty and I just wait 'til I get home and use the wet towel method.

I think Tulsa Enterprises (http://www.tulsaenterprises.com/hints.html) has some shield cleaning kits and advise that's pretty good.

Whatever you use, wipe your windshield north and south, not east and west. That will keep the glare from any small scratches down when you're riding into the sun.

I use the Honda polish.....it's great. You can use it on the whole bike too.

Something that works suprisingly well, especially if the bugs aren't too dry is hydrogen peroxide. The hydrogen peroxide breaks down the bug proteins and they come right off.

Found a neat little product at Advance Auto Parts last week. It's called KIT motorcycle cleaner. Made by the same people that make KIT car wax products.

It will clean chrome, paint, windshields and fairings and I can tell you the 16oz bottle will probably last a year at least.

It works best with microfiber towels...one to wipe on the cleaner and one to wipe and polish the cleaner off.

You won't believe how it makes the bike look when you see how easy it is to use.

Thanks all! Sounds like those scratches I've inflicted so far are not going away completely. Guess I'll have to be more careful from now on.

well..there are compounds that are made for that purpose (to remove scratches in plastic), but I have never used one so I can't comment on how well they work.

Meguiars Plastx...... Takes a while, but will remove those fine scratches... When washing my windshield, I soak a
dish towel with water and Simple Green.... Keep the towel
wet while washing your bike... Soak the towel again just
before you take it off, then use a Microfiber wipe/towel to
clean the remaining junk off of your windshield... Clean vertically...
Simple Green is some great stuff..

I have used the Honda polish and the Plexus and like the Plexus a lot better. I use it on the bikes plastic (only after a good wash - not in place of a wash), windscreen and my helmet visor.

No snickering out there, but the best, most economical clearner for windshield and bike, especially when you are on the road is lemon pledge. yup, cleans off the bugs and leaves your bike smelling lemony fresh. Seriously it's cheap and works fantastic when used with soft towels or clothes, just make sure the motel mgr. isn't looking..Try it, works great.

Soft towel (not terry cloth)
Soak windshield with wet towel laying on it (can be terry cloth just don't rub it)
Then wipe with soft towel north south
Honda cleaner with soft towel again
Plexus for final cleaner

Anal but clean.

Putt,
Be careful of Simple Green. Your right, its great stuff, but also corrosive to aluminum. Wont eat it up right away, but over the long haul, might cause blemishees, etc.

Thanks John,
Only place I let it sit is on the windshield, the rest of the bike
gets a once-over with a very soft brush, and a quick rinse. I
don't like for any chemicals to remain on painted/Aluminum surfaces
for too long....

Lots of water with a clean bare hand and follow up with Plexus and a soft cotton rag. (Old diapers work great. :D )

... it will turn your clear plexiglass into a yellow, brittle p.o.s.

Plexus is the stuff for windshields, developed for aircraft, blah blah blah - water does indeed work, but you have to be careful not to scratch. Honda's Pro polish is good if it's all you have.

I'm amazed people keep plugging this lemon pledge crap ... sure it works, but does permanent damage. Don't use it ! (...and a pastor yet  )

Lemon pledge also tends to attract bees and yellowjackets.

Would a Pastor ever lie?? I mean one that doesn't have a t.v. show! I and most of the guys I ride with have used pledge for years. Used it on last four bikes, mind you I've switched bikes every 2-3 yrs.. Are you serious it wrecks the windhshield makes it into piece of ....blush..I hate it when people talk dirty. But really, have you found it yellowing the plexi?

Water is the safest. Never use anything with any amonia i.e. Windex. I have stuff called a waterless car wash it is made up of polymers it cleans and waxes and you can use it on the entire bike. Works for me.

... yes, I've seen it. Primarily on a H-D w/s a fellow rider used to have. I saw his w/s luckly it was small and got replaced. I use Plexus - water does indeed work well, wet towel over w/s as the fellow said.

As far as you being a 'riding pastor' ... RIDE ON, BROTHER !

Hello Horst
Thanks for the feed-back, I have used plexus or nexus, good stuff, the best i have used was a Megauirs product, acutally two of them, a cleaner, then a polish, actually improved an older Gold Wings windhshield. Best advise is to keep well meaning gas station attendents away. I knew about the amonia products, don't think lemon pledge has any amonia, mostly just gentle cleaners and waxes. We have a major bug problem here later in the summer. Not right now they are all frozen, minus 31 last night. I enjoy being a pastor, happy to ride with anybody who enjoys bikes.
Merry Christmas everybody
