Good news from Hannagan's Meadow:
There WILL be lunch at
Hannagan Meadow Lodge (http://www.st-owners.com/forums/www.hannaganmeadow.com)
on
7-7-07
(Attend this event - click here (http://www.st-owners.com/forums/calendar.php?do=getinfo&e=116&day=2007-7-7&c=1))
They are gonna fire up the grill starting May 28 and will have hot lunch (basic burgers and dogs with sides) every Saturday from noon 'til 2. So, we're on for lunch on 7-7-7.
Make yur best choice for accommodations at Safford or Eagar or wherever, and join me for lunch between
noon and 2.
I plan to arrive around 11 and stay thru the lunch break.
Accommodations are available at the Lodge (9 rooms?) and some of the cabins will sleep up to 8. As of last Saturday, only 2 cabins had been reserved.
I need to get a head count, and prolly really ought'a have a web page, ala MoonSTOC. Any help out there?
Motels
There are many choices, but I like the Rode Inn in either Clifton or Springerville:
http://www.rodeinn.com/
Shirts
Gray Beefy-T, on the back: Generic SPORT TOURING, Ride a little farther, Ride a little faster
On the front: I Rode 666 on 7-7-07, in a Shield like a highway sign
Short Sleeve, $12 via paypal to cattmando@gmail.com. Long sleeve, add $2. Delivered at the lunch at Hannagan Meadow on 7-7-07. The ONLY way to get this shirt is to pay the price, then BE THERE between 12 and 2 on 7-7-07

Now, I just gotta make sure I ride up there in July...

Me and a group of friends always ride the "Devil's Highway," the mountain west's version of Deals Gap, every Memorial Day. This year we go through there on our Border to Border ride. Mexico to Canada on US 191, which used to be US 666. If this is in July, then I just might head down there again, with female companionship.
There are a couple of places to stay in Alpine, not sure I could recommend any. I have eaten at Hannigan before, but never stayed there. How are the accomodations?

KZ, the Meadow is a pretty nice place, popular with the hunting and back-country crowd. There's several places to stay in towns and the north and south end of the "good stuff."
I'm just about to do Clifton to Sho-Lo (in 10 minutes!) on my return trip to Kingman. Road and weather conditions look perfect.

I was thinking about riding to Glenwood on Friday. That's about 300 beautiful miles from El Paso. Spend the rest of the day visiting Mollegon and the Catwalk. Saturday riding to meet everyone at Hanagan and then ride back to Glenwood, relax. Ride home on Sunday. That would make a relaxing three day trip on of lunch. Not a bad deal.,

Had a great ride yesterday including the "good" parts of US-191. Stopped at Hannagan Meadow. They will start Saturday lunch after Memorial Day so we're good-to-go for 7-7-07
Be sure to click the "attend (http://www.st-owners.com/forums/calendar.php?do=getinfo&e=116&day=2007-7-7&c=1)" button on the ST-Owners home page so I can give'em a count before we all show up.
Interesting events on the road yesterday. I'll post details this evening in my "long" ride report.

Folks, just added a link in the top message for the Rode Inn motels. Ought'a make it easy for anyone heading that way for lunch on 7-7-07 at Hannagan Meadow. Be aware that Phelps-Dodge is opening a new mine near S(T)tafford and the engineers and worker-bees keep that area pretty well filled up during the week. Make yur reservations early.

I tried the cattmando@ to order two shirts. There was no way to pay for them. I guess I did something wrong. How do I order?
Just a quick reminder to anyone wanting a shirt:
Go to PayPal.com. All the instructions are there. Easiest is to use a credit card and send money to cattmando@gmail.com. You don't need a Pay Pal account to _send_ money.
Pay Pal is a nearly ubiquitous payment method, transfers funds easily. It is now owned by E-Bay. I've got quite a bit of cash stashed there (including some of yours!) :)
I use it when possible to pay for parts 'n farkles. Many vendors are using it, many _prefer_ it for ease-of-service. It's great for transferring $$ between private parties, goes directly to the receivers credit card or, if ya set up a bank account, into your account.
There is a small service fee which I'm eating on these shirts. It's for charity, don'ja know. If ya wanna include a couple extra bucks to help defray those costs, that's okay, too. That's what several folks did last year for the GO RIDE! memorial shirts.
An alternative is to send a check to:
George Catt
2174 Omaha Drive
Kingman, Arizona 86401.
Same prices apply. I prefer Pay Pal, tho, as it's easier for me to track.
Whatever, be sure to include the style (STOC, ST-Owners, or 666), size, long or short-sleeve, and your snail mail addie. I gott'a ship'em too.
The art work is in progress, I'm gonna have 48 shirts made in various sizes. Only ORDERED long sleeves, all else will be short sleeve. I'll carry some extras to 666 STOC (as there'll be other riders showing up there besides us).
AND, I'll be bugging youse laggards to buy a shirt til they are all sold. Gotta support the kids (http://www.pbtfus.org/rideforkids/).

So, George
My actual intent was to hand you the cash at Phoenix last weekend. Best laid plans...
So, I have been drug kicking and screaming into the modern era. I signed up yesterday for pay pal, in a couple of days I'll be able to send you the electronic funds.
It's not just your project that I need the pay pal for. I have parts and pieces from about 11 bikes that need to go to E bay, I'm running out of room. Just your project that got me off the dime.
Anybody need a top box? I now own 4, none that will fit the ST:) Among other things....
BTW, I don't do credit cards. The first ex Mrs. Big Tom cured me of that particular vice...
George
06-08-2007, 09:06 AM
Glad I could help. :)
I like Pay Pal, but I use credit cards, too. One _major_ caveat: I pay'em off every month, _no_ balance and _no_ interest charges! I treat'em like cash and don't use'em unless the cash is in hand to pay'em. Just using the "float" which lesson I learned early when interest rates were running 12/13/14%.
Credit card companies don't like me cause I don't pay'em. Casinos don't like me either, cause I win. Those palaces weren't built on the backs of winners. :D
O,BTW, $$ works, too, just don't send it thru the mail!

George, it was a struggle but I finally got my order in. Whew, what a chore. I know this is suppose to be easy and everything, but for some reason, the PayPal sight always leaves me reeling. Anyway, one order for a tee shirt is now in.
Update, just put in an order for a second one. Seems the wife thinks they are a great idea too!

Looks like Hannagan Meadow, AZ July 6-7, is a good destination for my summer ride from Houston, TX.
Where are you guys staying, Hannagan Meadow, (0 miles), Springville (48 mountain miles) or Clifton (64 twisty miles) ?
Thanks
George
06-17-2007, 01:59 PM
I'm planning to stay in Springerville Firday and Saturday night, but no reservations. I like to play it by ear. Last trip, I only made it to Payson on Friday.
Haven't heard details from anyone else. It's only an RTE (lunch) so do what seems best for ya.
My plan is Springerville on Friday, then Alpine and down thru NM on Saturday morning, cross back to AZ at Mule Creek and up to Hannagan Meadow for lunch. See ya there.
I like 666 South to North more than North to South.
STay in Safford (there are 4 I think there) or in Clifton.

My riding plans are:
I'll be slabbing the I10 from San Burn-arse-dino (hope to leave around 12 to 1pm) to Phoenix then take 60 out of Phoenix to Globe where I'll take 70 down to Safford.
I have ridden up 60 to Globe before, but have never been on the 70. What is that road like and how much activity is on it at night? Critters?
I'll meet up with Dana and the rest of the group at the Comfort Inn Saturday morning and ride up to Hannagan Meadow.
Once we are done with the ride/lunch, Dana was going the way of Show Low, where I'll take off for Holbrook and hit I40 (it's supposed to be cooler going that direction) and wind my way to Laughlin for Saturday Night.
Sunday morning, I'll be heading back to I40 and then to Route 66 down to Amboy, then to 29Palms, I10, Beaumont and down the 79 to home.
If anyone's schedule goes with that, let me know.

Bad news for the 666 ride! Just found this on the AZ Highway Conditions web site:
Event Id 215121
Location On US Highway 191, NS-bound from mile post 189.0, 3.0 miles North of GRAY PEAK to mile post 226.0, 5.30 miles South of HANNAGAN MEADOW
Duration from Sun, 1 Jul 2007 7:00 AM to Sun, 8 Jul 2007 7:00 PM
Description closed due to fire
Restrictions Length: 40 ft.
Hazardous materials
Public Notes chitty fire. no public access along us 191 from juan miller road, mp 189, to reno look out road 25, mp 226. no through traffic from morenci to alpine. use sr 78 and us 180 through new mexico. call: 928-687-1411
I'm going anyway, of course. I'll be at Hannagan Meadow with the pre-ordered shirts between 12 and 2. But we'll have to skip the best part of the ride.
I'm gonna stay in Springerville on Friday and Saturday nights. Those of you staying Clifton or S(T)afford will have to come up thru New Mexico to Alpine, then down (about 20 miles) to Hannagan Meadow. Still a good ride, but _not_ as good as 191 between Morenci and Hannagan Meadow.
Anyone wanna cancel?
I agree the best part of the Coronado Hwy is south of Hannagan Meadows... too bad...
That means we're going to have to ride down from the north..
See you there.

Nah, last year you went a MONTH earlier. And on a Tuesday, at that. George just hasn't got this calander thing all figured out, yet!:)
EDIT/add: This morning's AZ Republic left at least a little wiggle room on the road closure. So far mainly for smoke, and general trimming of the roadside (191) in case it is needed as a fire break. Could change by the weekend.

So it looks like we...whomever is staying in Safford, will need to take the 191/78 over to New Mexico, then take 180 north to Alpine and then go south to Hannagan Meadow, correct?
It looks like 78 gets pretty exciting, what is it and 180 like and how long should it take us having to go that route?
I guess, 'll just have to call it my Four States (CA, AZ, NM, NV) ride! :amflag:
George
07-03-2007, 11:16 AM
Bob, time-wise the route thru NM shuld add only a few minutes. 78 is great either direction but the _scenery_ is awesome east to west. Going west to east, be sure to stop near the top of the climb while still in AZ and gaze back over yur shoulder. Spectacular!
180 north thru NM is a good road but not nearly up to the thrills of 191. Also more traffic. Average speed will be higher so added miles don't change things that much time-wise.
Google Maps shows Safford to Alpine via NM as 146 Miles, Safford to Alpine via 191 as 141 miles. Hannagan Meadow is about 25 miles south of Alpine so figure 30 to 45 minutes added.

I am still planning on making it. Lots of other roads to explore other than 191, I will have to do that at a later time. I might even buy an extra tee shirt or two if you have any extra's. Leaving Phoenix (Hell) early on Friday Staying in Lakeside on Friday night,Alpine on Sat.
Just in case:
Hey! All you CA riders.
Please be advised that you will not believe how fast you can dehydrate while riding out here (and dehydration makes you take lousy choices while riding turning you into a lousy rider).
Camelback or lots and lots of hydration breaks are in order when you ride across the low deserts to those beautiful mountains on the East of AZ.
Ride careful (and wet!),

Good advice, Mark. I won't leave home without my hydration pac.
Speaking of wet, there appears to be a slight chance of moisture (http://www.weather.com/weather/tenday/USAZ0003?from=search_10day) in S.E. Arizona by 7/7. Be prepared.

I'm hoping to be there but I've managed to tweak my back and if it's not feeling better by Friday I'll need to take Saturday as a rest day. :(
So, if I'm there, I'm there and if I'm not, I'm sleeping!

Just checked the weathersite and it sure looks like and as suggested I'll need to take the rain gear. I wasn't gonna take the leather jacket, but from what the am forecast are looks like I'd better take it to. Don't know when I'll be out of here Friday AM, hope before 8 ,but if someone's coming down I-25 below ALB. I'm doing Socorro and cutting across on Hwy 60 into Springerville, I'll be easy to catch......gonna take it all in.

Jim, there's usually a monthly meet of the Phoenix squadron. Continue to watch the liST for dates and times and come meet some of us. So far, I've only made it down there a couple times but there's a pretty active group.

The never ending farkle list!!!
I replaced all the plastic without finishing a couple of electrical things, just in the interest of "Get'er Done!"
Then I started watching the weather reports (http://www.weather.com/weather/tenday/USAZ0003?from=dayDetails_topnav_undeclared).
So, I have plastic removed and I'm hooking up the vest leads.
Da-yummm, it never stops!
Oh, yeah, I'm packing rain gear, too.

With the current temp at 104º.

Made it to Springervill via Prescott, Jerome, Strawberry & Show Low, awesome 460ish mile ride. Highest temp 101, enjoyed a little rain just before pulling into Springervill. Ed (Shasta's Dad) was here when I pulled in. We shared some stories & such. A Black ST1100 Pulled in a little later, fella from Texas, (I'm real bad with names) George Kim & Stick pulled in a little after 6:00 There are a couple forestry fire guys staying at the Road Inn. I asked if there was a chance the rain would help open up the 666 for the weekend..... He said most likely not... I said "no chance?" He said maybe 10%..... I said thanks for the glimmer of hope. See you guy's at the meadow tomorrow.
Good to know you're all getting there okay.
Thanks for the post Bob,
Mark
The motorcycle gods just do not want me to do this ride.
Just finished removing a nail from my rear Bridgestone. URRRGHGHH.
Good news--Stop and Go mushroom plug worked like a charm. From yanking the nail, inserting the plug and filling the tire-- 23 minutes (in my garage).
All aired up and waiting for the morning to head out to Springerville.
See ya there.

The buggers ADDED a day! I'm going to head out here shortly, my next cup of coffee will be in Sierra Vista:) If I don't see you on the road, I'll not miss the lunch stop. Pretty constant with me. Not missing meals:)
Hannigan Meadows, here I come!
Rode 95 miles with the mushroom plug up 87 Beeline Hwy. Got into Payson, bike felt real 'squirrely' from the rear. Sure enough, mushroom plug became dislodged. Put another one in, turned 180 for home.
This is the reason why I missed the ride today. Left my hand in there for 'scale'.

The 666SToc turned out to be an awesome event! The "ride to eat" format was much more laid back & enjoyable than trying to manage a large
"Group Ride" Great roads, nice weather ( a little rain is a welcome site to a guy from Yuma) best of all the People. ST (and Gold Wing) owners are just real neat folks. Big thanks to George for the event Idea. Big thanks to Lisa, the shirts came out great!
How bout the full year model line up of ST1300's 03 - 07
Hang on, I'm sure more pictures & better ride reports will be coming.
Great 777 ride!
We left at 6:12 and ate breakfast in Miami. The rain the night before really cooled things off (we made this run on 4/4 too).
As we are heading out of Globe/Miami there is an ST1100 and BigTom. We stopped and rode out together. And as we did a sheriff pulled out to follow... So we turn left to Stay on 60 and he follows us out of town... I though "this could be a loooonnnnnnggggg ride up this twisty hwy". We pass another sheriff pointing his radar at oncoming traffic and our tail stops in the middle of the road to talk to him! YES!!! We ride slowly (and I suspect *really* big smiles) for a couple of miles and then the fun continues.
We stop at a little coffee shop in Show Low and then continue (passed a 2up ST 1100 and thought we'd see them at Hannagan's Meadow but they didn't show :( ). In Alpine we find the entire populace lining the street (4th of July parade on the 7th?) and coast through town a couple minutes later we arrive at HM.
Let's see if I can remember who was there (a mix of forum names and names)
Texas:
Luis (I didn't get the last name or his forum name).
Joe Urban (what a little ride for lunch!)
N.M.:
Ed (Shasta's Dad)
AZ:
Larry and Kathy
Patti
BigTom
Bob
Dan
Tony
George
Kim
Mark and Chris
And a couple from Phoenix on an '04 that I met but can't name)
Utah:
Howard
CA:
Dteel and Vicki
Bob
(okay... now tell me who I missed naming!)
BT, Patti, Chris and I leave somewhere around 2:30 and 'play pass the slow lines of cars' all the way back to Show Low (another coffee stop) and then Patti and Tom take 260 to the North and Chris and I ride back 60 through the Salt River Canyon, Globe, Miami and home. Dodged at least 2 tickets... hit the binders as soon as I saw the dps in the next lane and one parked near the top of a long grade of curves. Chris said he must have been doing paper work because we were doing better than 80 climbing that section.
We only needed our wet vest from Superior to Tempe.
Got back just after 8pm.
A great time.
You'll note we had all ST1300 years represented in fine fashion!

Made it to 666STOC! Vicki and I had a great time, the people and the destination were both great!
The highest temperature encountered was 109º (multiple times and locations), the lowest was 59º cresting the mountains on HWY 8 returning to El Cajon on 7-7-07. The distance according the odometer on the bike was 1219.7 miles, removing the -6.9% from the SpeedoHealer and it comes to 1303.9 miles. According to MS Streets, the route was 1295.0 miles.
Gallons of gas: 35.063
Fuel cost: $109.62
Average MPG: 36.933
Route: Left El Cajon at 0600 on 7/6/07 traveling east on I8 to HWY191 north, arrived in Safford at 1530 (spent the night). Left Safford with SupraSabre at 0809 on HWY191 north to HWY78 east to HWY180 north to Alpine (held captive to see a parade). Continued south on HWY 191 to Hannagan Meadow. Left Hannagan Meadow traveling with AzDesertRider north on HWY 191 to Springerville. Took HWY 60 south/west to Phoenix, turned east I10 (actually traveling south) to south on SR347 to Maricopa where we turned west on SR 238 (Dead Cow Road) to Gila Bend. Took 8 west Yuma where we said goodbye to AzDesertRider and continued on to El Cajon and home arriving at 0130, 7/8/07.
Bob (SupraSabre), it was good riding with you! Thanks for meeting up with Vicki and I and leading the way to Hannagan Meadows. I particularly appreciate the stops for pictures. The memory isn’t what it use to be and pictures are a great way to capture the moment. Speaking of pictures, you’ll have to check mine out here (http://www.st-owners.com/pp_gallery/showgallery.php?cat=554). Just one teaser shot is included to get you to go look.
Bob (AzDesertRider), thanks for leading the way and showing us all the shortcuts. MS Streets still says that the “Dead Cow Road” doesn’t exist and keeps insisting that it is State Route 238. Vicki says she wants to thank you for showing us Salt River Canyon; it was beautiful! Also, I wanted to mention that I’m glad we got that issue with your cheeks straightened out.

For all you folks that did 666 great stuff. 60 between Show Low and Globe is on my favorites list. Mark and Tom, I believe I would have pulled off and waited half an hour or so and then busted up through there if the LEO stayed on me very long.

Well, I'm home, too.
Ater a 650 mile yesterday, it only took me about 350 to get home today.
I left from home at 3:00 yesterday, met Mark and Chris (by accident, what a good deal) at Globe. My story is his story from there until Show Low for the second time.
I followed Patty until she turned off at Overguard, then cruised on in to Payson, where I spent the night. I didn't decide whether I was going north or south until after Sunday breakfast. Boy, am I glad I went north.
260 from Payson to Cottonwood was at worst pleasant, with some really nice stretches and great scenery. 89A from Cottonwood to Prescott was THE BEST MOTORCYCLE ROAD EVER! It has always been my favorite, but Sunday morning, I only had ONE car to pass. All the way over Mingus Mountain with only ONE cage to pass, AND HE PULLED OVER AT THE FIRST POSSIBILITY. If that isn't MC heaven, I don't know (and probably don't care) what is.
Patty had told us about the resurfacing job on 89 from Prescott to Wilholt. She said it was really good. It was way past that. I rode from Prescott to Wilhot on BRAND NEW PERFECT PAVEMENT. Oh, My! Oh, and I only had one cage to pass AND HE PULLED OVER AT THE FIRST POSSIBILITY! I've either been living really well or just cashed my lucky streak at the great Karmic Bank in the Sky. That is something over 100 miles of the best road on the planet with 2 cages...
I did get passed. I saw a new Connie 14 at Jerome, when I saw lights, I thought maybe...wrong, it was a new BANDIT! He whipped on me pretty good:)
I soaked my vest at Prescott, re soaked at the Kofa Cafe. Riding home in pretty miserable 110 and wind was really worth it for the rest of the ride...I got 650 miles yesterday, with out the vest. In fact, I had my liner in for a while:)
What a great gig. Good folks, good food, great roads. What else is there?
Really nice to see some again, and put a few more faces to names. I could go on, but I think I'd better rest up. I had a really good time. Thanks to George for the doing, and Kim for the shirts. I got several comments on mine this morning...
Mac,
I was thinking along those lines too... Luckily he disappeared from the rear view fairly quickly... dodged a bullet! :D
BT,
Well if you and Patti say that is has just been done I'm going to have to ...
Go Ride!!!

Short report with only a couple pics.
Friday: Kingman, Flag (with a break to help a hefty gal fix her flat on I-40 around Ashfork.) Then, Flag to Strawberry to Payson (where we _almost_ broke even at the casino.) Fast forward to Show Low and on into Springerville. Rain in Payson and Show Low but it was pleasant after some of the 100++ temps.
Met Ed, Joe, and Howard at the Rode Inn. Kim, Howard and I dined al fresco at Mickey Dees, then off to bed.
Satuday was a little different: South from Springerville, thru Alpine, thur Hannagan Meadow, to the road block on 191. Found it closed from there south. Turned west and north instead and took this pic on the Black River (30 miles of gravel!)19837
Made it back to Hannagan Meadow about 11:15. Lots of folks showed up pretty quickly after that. Lots of socializing and lunch, then everyone went their own way again.
Lots of good folks showed up (you'll see their individual reports here.) Lunch was good. Conversation was good. Pics are good (more to be posted.)19843
Saturday afternoon, Kim and I went over thru NM and then north. We got hit by a pretty good TS.
19839
19840
Dodged a ticket on US-60 just after reentering AZ. DPS headed down hill, we're going uphill (cruise set at 80++.) We both hit our brake lights at the same time. I cuised with gritted teeth for a couple miles but he never returned.:hotpepper
Had a couple beer with Ed and Joe then turned in.
Sunday, Kim and I did breakfast at the Rode Inn (included in the price) then headed west over 260, but not before taking this pic:
Lots more to come, including MORE rain _and_ hail, but we made it home abou t 7:30 this evening with no grief.

Thank you George & Kim. I had a great time at the meet & greet at the Lodge. Had a super time following Bob's 03 on 191 getting there too! Great ride Bob, I learned of few things about canyon carving and the super handling of the 1100. I had to lean tighter than the 1300 but what a blast. I did all this feeling a little apprehensive about how my 1100 would do. Aside from the temp gauge fluctuating more than it normally would and with forgetting to take down my 1st set a gas numbers when I topped off in Socorro, I ran 588 miles on 11.81 gallons.... Geeez! You just can't beat that. I ran for the most part prolly around 65 to 70 most of the ride except when I ran out on
I-40 after taking 36/117 out of Quamado. I had to run 85 or get my a$$ run over. Nice people these ST & Wing owners .....just not on this site but in person as well. I bought a one time camera, (digital's broke)but have'nt run it in for developement and hope I get something good enough to post.

Hi Guys!
My Camera secret is a "Kodak"! Yep believe it or not, it really takes some great pictures while riding! It's the P850 and I have a couple of different lens for it, but it has really surprised me on how good it does!
I just hang it around my neck and take pictures as I see fit. (Got to make sure there is nothing in front of you though...
Similar to this:

To clairify one point though, there is a time lag when shooting. You don't always get the picture you wanted to get. But I have learned to live with it anyway.

Tom, I use an HP M527, takes two rechargeable aa cells. Wally World sells a pair of batteries in a portable charger that plugs in the wall. I carry a spare pair in the charger and can swap'em in about 15 seconds.
But, gotta say, either pair takes well over a 100 shots before the battery drops out.http://www.webshots.com/user/georgecatt

After all my crowing about having batteries in reserve, I was shocked to find mine had all discharged (heat fatigue) when I went to take some pics on Sunday:rolleyes: Good to see that somebody was on the ball.
BTW, I also use the charger system that George describes, for my camera and mouse batteries. Either the batteries or the charger are starting to go south. Good report, Bob. To bad you didn't have some more time. The ride west from Springerville is a lot more interesting if ya stay south of I-40, thru Vale Verde, Cottonwood, Jerome, Prescott, Kirkland, Bagdad, the either north on the 93 toward Kingman, or south and west towards Parker, cross the river, and then CA 92 across the desert. Not much in the way of amenities but a lot more interesting ride.
My opinion,
