With the 2008 emissions closing in fast and more quickley down the road to follow....will BMW really stop making this engine????...I just wondered what your thought are????
http://www.raptorsandrockets.com/News/2007_BMW.htm
Harley's answer was to slow down there engine a bit and add a sixth gear to compensate for lower rpms.......
Plus I am starting to see a trend for some of the companies out there, including Honda going to the V4 on more of there machines.......
 Taking it out a little farther....will the V4 design be the norm by lets say 2009?????????????????

BMW is going to keep the boxer motor around as long as they can. It may have to change a bit but the faithful love that motor. When they tried to drop it they relly caught hell!:03biker:

No, won't happen... the boxer is iconic to BMW and they would be foolish to get rid of that remarkable design... if anything, the new hexhead engine is years more fuel efficient with emissions requirements over the R259 Oilhead... twin spark, catalytic converter redesigned to optimize scrubbing emissions...
I think that if there is any change, they may eventually go to some sort of liquid cooling system, but still retain the benefits of air-cooling with the cylinders stuck out in the wind... I mean, the V-Rod, while not a sales success for H-D, did introduce the V-twin with liquid cooling concept to the HOG members... I think BMW would have a much easier time selling that new engine concept to their fans because they already produce models with that basic technology (K bikes).
The day that BMW gets rid of the boxer is the day that Porsche gives up on the flat six, GM gets rid of the small block V8 and Honda starts selling Goldwings with so much crap on them from the factory that the aftermarket just decides to fold and call it a day : )

Do you think they will be able to go liquid cooled with out the pistons scraping at every corner as the article suggests that they will??????
The other company thats looking at V4 is Duc!.....and from what I can gather Honda will have at least one more model....probably more in V4 by 2008???
I guess what I find intrusting is this puts us ahead of the curve

BMW will no sooner shelve the boxer than Harley will shelve the V-twin. Think "water-boxer" someday....

Duc's V4 I think, is actually an L4 design and they have been testing it for a few years now. Their GP bike is a L4 so I don't think the Duc's will be v-twins much longer.
Like that article said, I don't know how they can water cool the boxer engine without making it too big. I'm sure BMW will keep it in the works for a while longer, that being said.

Gee, I just wonder what they will do with the Boxer engine!
Maybe This? (http://www.motorcyclenews.com/MCN/News/newsresults/mcn/2007/April/apr16-22/apr1707bmwsportboxer/?&R=EPI-90594)
