OK,
I am looking to avoid all of those "oops missed a push rivet or screw" incidents whan I pull the tupperware off of my '04 ST in order to do some upgrades and mtce.
Could somebody give me a step by step on safely getting the left and right upper and lower front farings off?
Thanks,
Chris

Hi Chris,
I just did this yesterday. To be honest there is so much to doing it all I would honestly consider getting the shop manual for the bike to do it. You dont need it but it sure cuts down on the guess work.
To remove the middle cowlings, and lower cowlings, you have to remove the inner cowlings also. The mirrors need to also need to come off.
When you get it all off it looks like this:

Curt; What is the tin? piece that bridges the two uprights on the windshield adjuster assembly? Is it OEM?

The job is a basic "start at the bottom and move up". The right and left lower cowls come off. You then move to the pieces that hold the right and left cowls (mirrors, front inner cowls). You then remove the right and left cowls (the glove boxes come off with the cowls and then seperate).
A manual helps but the key is to go slow and don't force anything. There is a method to the madness.

Remember to remove the inner cowls first because they are attached to the middle cowls that you are trying to remove.

I like that picture too! It is amazing how much of the technology on the ST is hidden behind those innocent, simple looking panels.
I am goint to take the advice and order the shop manual. For now the local dealership will let me come in and look at those pages all I want.
I'll let ya'll know how it goes as I progress.

Ah, the old green spot. I just got it back a couple weeks ago from the shop with a newly repaired water pump. Warrenty fix. Problem solved.

The flow chart in the manual, for removing the fairing, has to be one of the worlds worst.
I used to draw flow charts but I can't follow that one.
The hardest part for me, was getting it off, from around the fairing pockets.

I was about to lose my mind until I realized that the inner cowl that I was told to remember to remove was still in place. Once I dropped it, the upper went back smooth and easy. I ended up with one extra "push the center" type rivit that I need to find and a sping clip popped of the lower that I have to get back in place.
For me to only have 2 extra parts after a project is a new record!

See I tried to warn you about the inner cowling but you didn't listen. ;)
Glad to see you figured it out anyway.

Has anyone taken step-by-step pics of the removal and reassembly of the side panels? I need to do it to install a 12v DC receptacle below the right fairing storage compartment, like Jeff Bertrand explained in his posting
http://www.st-owners.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2728 :bow1:
But I am afraid that removing and reinstalling the panels is going to be a bit frustrating - I am not much of a mechanic
Thanks!
