View Full Version : When you are about to be passed, do you...

While riding on the public roads, whether in the twisties or on the highway, when someone closes in on you, do you:
1) Move over when safe and allow him/her to pass, or
2) Speed up and show him/her who's boss, or
3) Allow him/her to pass, then chase them down at THIER pace?
4) Anything else I havent listed, and please specify.
Edited: "someone" = another motorcyclist. If its a four wheeled vehicle, they are on thier own in passing me, unless I can pull COMPLETELY off the road in a safe manner.
I voted to move over and let them by. But sometimes...:D

I tend to keep my position in the lane unless it's a semi or cager close to the line, then I tend towards the middle of the lane. I've always felt that moving over might give the impression that the lane's free and the passer may pull in too soon.

I move over and let them go by when it's safe to do so, as I wouldnt want to ruin thier pace by holding them up. I would hope the next person I close in on would do the same for me. On the other hand, I have been passed on straightaways, only to nearly run into the back of them into the first corner.
I go by the motto "If youre gonna pass me, you better STAY in front of me"
Disclaimer: All this occurs while riding in a safe manner for conditions and NEVER above the speed limit. Well, maybe a little.

If it is another motorcycle, I will make a very obvious move to the side to allow a pass. Sometimes I will wave them on.
Cagers will have to move to another lane. I will move to the slow lane if possible and safe.
At intersections, I wave them on almost every time.
My attitude is that I be courteous at all times. One never knows which lunatic one encounters. In addition, I hope the cager remembers and is courteous to the next biker he encounters.

As a believer in particularism, I do whatever I deem appropriate for the particular situation. Generally, I try to find the right blend of the Golden Rule and rational self-interest, i.e., be courteous and stay safe.

I voted other because what I normally do is just let them pass me--and hopefully they do this in the other lane. I do not tend to move over in my lane so they can squeeze by me--I try to encourage them to use the other lane. Why? I have absolutely no idea what this person's riding skills are; nor do I know if they are sober or stoned or perhaps have some other nefarious thought in mind.
I also normally refuse to pass another bike by sharing his lane.
By the way, the MSF riders course I took a few years ago also taught what I just said above.
Ride Safe!

I voted other. I only move over if I'm in the left lane, one doesn't belong there unless passing anyway. I usually cruising at the speed limit+ so I'll let them by and then pace them from a distance. That way I can use them as a "radar rabbit".

You people get passed? :crackup Seriously, I try to follow the Golden Rule:
Do unto others...Well, you know the one. Anyway, I like to think of examples on the Dragon where folks will pull over so that I can run the Dragon a little faster while allowing themselves a chance to sight see without worrying about me looking for a safe place to come around. Of course, I usually slow down for the mad skilled motard crowd up there, as I want them to be able to enjoy the road, and I don't want to risk getting creamed by one of them that doesn't have mad skillz. Out on the open road where cars and trucks are the primary game, I'm usually the one in the lead.

+1!!!
I'll also add that, in a lot of cage traffic, I try to act as much like a driver (rather than a rider) as possible and don't take advantage of being smaller and on two wheels. Well, unless it's time to pass - passing on the ST is sure nothing like passing in the old Accord, that's for sure!

Depends on the road and condition..
Generally I keep a steady speed and position and let them figure out when to go around..(nothing worse than a weaving/irratic/slowing/speeding person when you try to overtake!)
On a tight twisty like the Dragon, I move right and wave by...

I've only had one person besides Dennis pass me in-lane. Of course, Dennis and I have done more than 14k miles together over the last two years, so it's a little different with someone you know so well. However, the other person that passed me in-lane really irritated me because he did not wait for me to wave him by and he passed in-lane around a tight turn with no warning. Then he pulled up next to Dennis and rode side-by-side with him for a mile or so and irritated him, too... I'll wave people by for the in-lane pass if I'm comfortable with where I'm at, but so far, Dennis is the only one who's ever passed in-lane when I waved him by.

Not much passes me but when they do, I let them by, then follow at a safe distance. I love BAIT! :D

Pass? Pass? What is this pass you speak of???
No really, for other motorcycles, if I don't know them, NEVER in my lane and rarely if I do know them.
In the twisties, hmmmm, I rarely get passed and if I do I wave them on, but I don't hold up traffic.
Harleys...........I ALWAYS pass.

I am probably the slowest rider on the forum. when it comes to any vehicle going faster than me (lots of times) I make an obvious move right and waive them by. However, If I am the faster one and the car (not had this problem with other motorcyclists) is just not going to let me by (even ignoring turnout lanes) I have been known to cross a double yellow line to get by them. I try to get as far in front of them as fast as I can because some of these guys decide they don't like me in front and then speed up radically. If they had been driving that way in the first place, I wouldn't have had to pass in the first place. If I can get way out in front they lose interest and go back to their Ozzie & Harriet ways.

Bikes don't usually pose much of an issue for passing. If one wants to pass me, they'll pass me, just as if I want to pass one, I'll pass it. No fuss, no muss. Cages, though, are a different story. If I do find myself in a situation with a cage riding behind me obviously wanting to go faster, I'll make it as easy as I can to let them pass me. I don't need or want one sitting behind me to distract me, or to run into me if I have to do a panic stop (deer cross the road, etc). So what I do is in the next obvious safe passing spot, I hold my lane, wave them on by and slow down. As soon as they are in the next lane, I'll slow waaay down in order to clear them coming back into the lane in front of me.
...and as someone else said, they better not slow me down in whatever twisties might be up ahead...

MOST of the time, I'll let 'em pass. However, if I'm trying to make time, I'll let 'em pass, give 'em some lead, and then accelerate to their speed so that they can plow any radar traps for me... :D

I'll always let them pass. I've got the best bike and don't want to make them feel too bad.

In Texas the left hand lane is for passing. If it’s a 2 lane in don’t go packing beer cans and dodging debris on the shoulder for anyone. I try, I say try, to following the speed limit. If they want to pass, they can go left – not me. They could cut me off or clip me in my lane. If they want to speed big time – well speed on brother – hell an’t half full yet.

I tend to stay to the left of the lane no matter who is attempting to pass me. As they pass, I move more to the right of the lane just in case they have to pull in.
