I was wondering when someone would break down and put something here. I got mine from Livebait Larry.

I have major neck pain and this definitely helps. I think their perfect but it does make raising the tank a PITA.

Just got my Helibars today, do you use the same bolts that are on the ST1300 to intall them? I thought the Helibars would come with longer bolts, given you are adding an inch of material?

You can also order direct, $159.95 : http://www.helibars.com/pics/honda/st1300.html . They also offer a riser pre-drilled for mounting a ram carrier for Cell, GPS, etc.

I also have the risers from livebait larry. I love them.

Pros
Hands no longer hit tank at full lock
Hands do not block as much of the rear view mirrors
Better mount for GPS / ect.
Elbows feel better after a long ride
A little cheaper than Heli.

Cons
Still not cheap
(but worth it for me)

gavoss,

Just for your info, Heli, Modified offers a set of "universally" adjustable handlebar risers for the ST1100 that look really nice. I saw several ST100's with them at WeSTocIX last year. They're a bit pricey, at, I believe around $450.00, but they include braided stainless steel brake line extensions, as they raise the handlebars considerable. The angle can be changed as well as the height, and the bars can be rotated forwards and backwards as well as up and down. MCN gave a pretty good write up a year ago or so, and they looked like a pretty trick unit. No such thing available for the ST1300, though, due to the differenc kind of handlebar set up. Hope this helps, cuz the 1100 is a pretty darn good motorcycle. This rig should allow you to sit almost bolt upright, or any angle you desire.

And Heli Modified Inc. is a good company to do business with.

In view of the great (from our point of view) USD$<~~>GBP£ currency exchange rate at the moment, I ordered the Heli Bar riser c/w pre-drilled to take a RAM mount just last month.

Took only 6 days to travel across 'the pond' from the Cornish, Maine based supplier and to arrive right to my front door here in the far south-west of England.

As I say, a great efficient service - to all British suppliers: Take Note!

I bought Helibars and installed them. Not too difficult. Well worth it. Was approx $175 or so.

I bought my ST1100 without even starting it let alone riding it.
WHen i did--what a pain.

I bought the tallest widest aftermarket windshield and Heli bars. The heli bats were not wide enough so I stuck 1 1/2 " 3/4:" PVC on the ends to widen them. I had to buy special allen bolts --long ones to screw back on the bar ends.

Then I wanted heated heli bars. Had to drill out the ends where they were peened to get the solid spacers out that have the female threads for the bar ends... stick in my heaters --(had to drill holes for the wires) --
I tapped the spacers back in without peening them. I placed the toggle on off jst below the left pocket.

It has been great. just great, since I did all this. Less shoulder/back pain and warm hands. Here in Michigan it is only warm 2 months and I ride 9.

I am big and wide. 6' 4" 250. I owned several WIngs..but felt I was still to young at 50 to be riding them..

So, for the 91 I see on heli's webpage they are wanting $265.00 for Part # HB9401 ('91-94). From what I have read, this is the only option for the 91 to get 3" taller/3" rearward. Is this correct?

Secondly, if I go with the above, can I get the full 3"taller/3" rearward without changing brake line or any cables?

1991-2002

Up to 3" taller and 3" more rearward
Wrist angle adjustable
Telescopic
Available in Black Powder Coat only
Investment cast chrome-moly clamping lugs
for higher strength and lighter weight
Sleeker profile lugs
Improved Overall Appearance

I belive the helis for the ST1100 are different than what we get for the ST1300. They actually replce the whole handlebar assy. The bonus is they are adjustable. You can get all or just part of that 3 up and 3 back. I believe all helis retain stock lines unless otherwise stated on the site, and I didnt see anything on it about yours.......Ahh here it is under the FAQ on helis website.
Q: Will I need to modify throttle cables or brake lines?
A: Most Heli BarTM Handlebar Adapter models are designed to work with all of your stock cables and hydraulic lines. In some cases, it is necessary to replace your throttle cables or hydraulic lines. If longer lines or cables are required, they are provided with the Heli BarsTM.

Hope this helped!!!

Thanks Little John,
I had read the same but was interested in feedback as to reality when installing and trying to get full 3"/3".Not that it will stop me from getting them, just wanting to know the FULL story. I don't want to have the bike torn down and THEN find out I need new lines etc! :)
From what I have read and seen, Heli is pretty straight forward and honest. I pick up my '91 tomorrow. I know I have to get the bars due to comfort, which will result in the +4T +2W windshield from some mfg., which will result in some type of trunk and trunk mounting bracket from some mfg, which will result in a CB setup (all my riding group use CBs), probably from J&M or Sierra, which will result in....... :<)

How much of a PITA - do you need to remove the risers in order to raise the tank? Can you still get it up high enough to get to the air filter without removing the risers?

It's not PITA to raise the tank with the Heli risers installed. Merely loosen or remove the long bolt at the rear of the tank, after repositioning the forward seat mounting braket into the "service" position, and slide the tank rearward as far as it will go. Obviously you need to remove the two screws that hold the front of the tank down. What I do is grasp the front of the tank with my left hand and the rear of the tank with my right hand, and while lifting just slightly with my left hand, I slide the tank to the rear with my right, as far as it will go. Lifting the tank just clears the handlebars. You have to be careful, but it's really no problem. The key is to make sure the tank is slid as far rearward as possible, first. You do not have to remove the risers.

Thanks for the information, Fireball. I'm a new ST owner and have been putting in some miles to get used to the riding position of the ST. I've been experiencing wrist and shoulder soreness, but figured I'd give the stock setup a couple thousand miles to give it a fair shake.

Despite my efforts to keep as much weight as possible off my hands, the soreness persists. Looks like I'll be getting risers sooner than later. Now I just need to place my hands in the different positions offered by the Heli's and the Genmars to see which one is more natural. Thanks again for the information.

Ken, one thing to notice while you are riding with the stock setup... Do you find yourself sometimes holding the grips with just your fingertips to make your upper body more comfortable? If so, then you are a prime candidate for risers. If you haven't tried this technique, next time you are slabbing it give it a shot. I used this technique on a KZ1000 years ago and found it was the perfect answer. I thought my Wing might need risers but changing hand positions had no effect. I found that I just needed to focus on arm position... elbows lower and closer to the body.

Ken

That's great advice, Dorian, thank you. I've not ridden with fingertips, but I'll give this a try on the way to work tomorrow morning and pay more attention to where my elbows are too.

Ken, like you I was getting a little wrist and back pain with my stock setup. I did try to drive with my fingertips and changed my elbow locations. That seemed to help. I ordered the Heli's and just put them on. They make a huge difference for me and now I don't get the back or wrist pain. I was worried about the 2 1/2 " back, but it enables me to handle the bike with more confidence and lack of any pain. Well worth the investment.

OK, so the test definitely proves I am a good candidate for risers (and that I am impatient son-of-a-gun). I'd like to go with the Heli Risers (optional cover) that can accomodate a Ram Ball Mount for my GPS.

The Heli site has me covered for the risers, but I need to find out exactly what I need for the mount, where to get it, and how it mounts to the GPS unit. Thanks everyone!

As a follow-up to this thread, I ended up odering the MCL risers after exchanging email with Larry about tank raising. The 1.5" rise and the 2" sweep back, coupled with the fair price and free RAM ball sold me. Ordered Monday, arrived today, installed this evening in about 45 minutes. What a HUGE difference they make. FANTASTIC! Thanks everyone!

Thanks

You will not need to extend any lines or cables.

I was told by previous ST owners and other folks that I'd simply have to invest in risers to find the bike comfortable. I'm not of symian build and am used to more straight up riding positions.
Now, I'll grant you I haven't done super long days on it yet - the longest is about 300 miles so far - but as of yet I've felt no burning desire or need to put risers on the bike.
I'm surprised. In fact, I'm finding the riding position quite comfortable. And this from a 52-year-old non-sportbike-type.
Of course, I always reserve the right to change my mind at any time. :D

I just purchased the heli bars for my ST1300 and I don't know how to remove the 4 round head bolts located in the handle bars. Can anybody please tell me how to take them off???

I think you are referring to the plastic covers - get a very small screwdriver (jeweler's stuff works great) and carefully pry them out.

Note: Make note of the duct tape item in this post. It makes it real easy to get the nut/washer both on and off the bottom of the riser. Use your socket to finish pulling them off and to restart them. If you need pics and can supply them. This was the most difficult part for me anyhow. I have big hands.
