Just thought y'all would like to know...
In an earlier post I mentioned that when I pulled the tupperware from my ST1300 for periodic maintenance I discovered oil seepage at the head gasket on both sides of the engine. Took it in to the dealer to have it looked at because the bike is still under warranty.

The cause turned out to be not the head gasket but an inspection port of some kind on top of the engine in the V between the two cylinder banks. It was installed without a gasket and there were puddles of oil in the area which then seeped down around the cylinders. This port seems to have no function, is not documented in the shop manual and according to the Service Manager he couldn't get any information on it from his contacts at Honda engineering. To fix it they put a gasket under it and screwed it shut. I picked the bike up yesterday and it rides fine up to 120 mph indicated so they apparently reassembled it correctly.

It seems I've heard something similar happening on some ST1100-s. Is that correct or is this unique to the ST1300-s. What say ye out there?

Some of the early '03s had this problem IIRC. The port you refer to is an access used in manufacturing to drill an oil galley after casting. There were a few cases of it that I'm aware of.

Steve,

I see that you have a KLR650. My son is looking into buying a KLR650 and he is wondering how the KLR650 works on longer highway trips. He is looking at used KLRs or used BMW dualsports. The KLR is much more reasonably priced than the BMW so he is leaning towards getting the KLR. He can't afford to get both. So whats your thoughts on using the KLR for highway trips?
