Have to do it early or late. It's hotter than hell in July-August. I remember one July it was 112 in Moab. I zipped up my Darien and poured a mini-cooler full of ice water over my head and down my neck. Two skateboarders were sitting and watching me. Thier only comment was, "Duuuude!" It felt deliciously cool for about 15 minutes, then back to miserable.

I generally do a birthday ride the weekend before Memorial Day. SLC area to Vernal, Dinosaur, Rangely, and Grand Junction Day 1. South to Mexican Hat, Monument Valley, up the Moki Dugway to Torrey Day 2. Eat rattlesnake in Torrey. Back home by some scenic route Day 3.

Anyway, early is before June 15. Late is after Sep 15. No good places to stay at 4 Corners - all Indian reservations. Decent places in Grand Junction, Blanding and Torrey. Ripoff places at Moab, Cortez. Too many tourists and RVs driving up prices.

Good info... maybe June 9-12? I like to avoid holidays as places are packed, RV are all over the place and so are the cops...

There's already a few June events... so, looks like the end of Sept. would be better. I know the Aspens had started to change on my way back from WeSTOC this year and that was a great view.

Sounds sweet to me! That's during high water around here, so I may actually be off work and able to go. If anyone is traveling through Salida on the way, maybe we can meet up for the ride to Durango. :biker:

Sorry Joe,

I won't be able to get off again that soon after CampSTOC.

September would be better for us on this side of the Mississippi :croc:

via Colorado Springs 1230 miles
via 285 to 160 outta Denver, 1179 miles......
285 is a much nicer ride...
285 it is..... Should be able to make that in
a day... (might have to stop in Denver to
see some old friends.. Maybe on the way back)

I am planning another trip to Colorado in May. My little trip from Pearland/Houston, Texas last September was 2,728 miles. It took 2 days to get to Walsenburg CO, taking less traveled routes (off the interstates.) Durango is another 246 miles. This rally may be the ticket for me.

Does anyone have a count of possible attendees? Any parking lot 'tire kicking' planned. Where are you guys staying and what are the motel rates? I'll wait for some responses and will call for lodging.

My clutch is a little weak, slips a little WOT 5800-6200 on flat land, will decide tomorrow if I'll put in new plates before the trip.

I'm new to "st-owners" and have a question. What, uhm, is the 4CornerSTOC event ? A gathering to ride the area together ? A reason to ride to Durango ? Or, more along the lines of "no reason, just a great ride." Anyway, Iron Horse Inn just quoted me $69/night.

Yes to all of the above!!! And the $69/night at the Iron horse is for a
fair sized room from what I understand... Two beds, on on the ground floor, and one in the loft.... If you have a Military ID, it's $59 a night... You gonna take 285 outta Denver?? (via Wolf Creek Pass)

My USMC ID expired about 12 years ago, so looks like $69 for me. I probably won't decide my route until a day or two before as the weather will be the determining factor. One route I'm thinking of is I-70 west from Denver to Glenwood Springs. South to Carbondale, the take 133 over McClure Pass, on down through Paonia to Delta. From Delta, south through Montrose, then take 550 through Ridgway, Ouray, over Red Mountain Pass (at 11,000+ feet, snow could be falling) and on into Durango. Or maybe out of Denver on 285 to Poncha Springs, west to Gunnison and Montrose, then down 550 to Durango. Or down 285, and once in the San Luis Valley, a quick detour to the Alligator Farm over near Great Sand Dunes, then up and over Wolf Creek Pass (snow?). So many great roads...

Putt
04-26-2005, 08:06 PM
As you well know, the Rockies can be "iffy" in May....
The I-70 West then down is a great route...
For an Interstate, I-70 is a great ride... I generally
get off on U.S. RT 6 and take Loveland Pass rather than the Eisenhower :)
Gunnison to Durango is a great ride also... Might come back the way that
your are going, when I head for home...

It's getting closer....
Be leaving here on the 17th. Spend the night in N. Platte, NE, from there to Denver RON, head out on 285 towards Wolf Creek Pass and Pagosa Springs, (CW McCall: "The bridge was at the 12 foot line, and them chickens were stacked to 13'9.....") to Durango, stay till the morning of the 21st head on back to
Denver and home... I am sacrificing two chickens and a goat to the weather
gods for clear skies and warm temps.... Oh, you might want to bring liners
for your riding gear, the days might be pleasant, but at 6500 feet, when the
sun goes down, it cools off rather quickly.... Stay warm!!

Weather here has been truly awful. Mid 40s and constant, never-ending, bone-chilling, mind-numbing, drizzly, dirty, rain. With brief intervals of gloomy overcast and high winds. And they tell me we live in the desert! Really got a bad case of PMS (Parked Motorcycle Syndrome). Can't leave until Friday May 20 (due to work obligations) and I sorta plan to take the scenic route to Grand Junction, staying the night somewhere between GJ and Crawford, then do the Black Canyon of the Gunnison on the way to Durango on Saturday. But no promises. If it's crappy weather to the south and clear to the North or West, I will probably head for blue skies and open spaces. I love having only half-baked plans anyway!

Are you ready?

In the last month I:

Checked valve clearances - all in spec at 46,293 miles.
Changed oil & filter. Made general inspection.
Replaced tires Bridgestone Exedra G547 & G548, (moly on splines)- those old fashioned bias tires are smooth at 5-125 mph, last year seemed to enable peg scraping.
Replaced clutch frictions and springs.
Replaced both front wheel bearings (discovered after clutch work - rocking the bars while on center stand really made the loose bearing show up.

Looks like I am becomming a Honda mechanic - oops! technician. Looks like the trip next week from Houston to Durango is a go.
