"Here's your chance to get together with your fellow ST-Owners.com buddies and do some farkling, repairing, buying and installing Tom's great ST stuff and shooting the bull! Not to be missed! Pizza and sodas will be included!"

I’m new here and a little bit curious on how this TECHSTOC works. From what I can gather it appears that Tom sells us some stuff and we install it on our bike there? Sounds good for Tom and bad for my credit card. Are there tools available? What about a lift? What’s a Farkle? Is it contagious and will it clear up with good dose of penicillin? Why are we “shooting a bull”? I’m going to have trouble strapping my bolt action 270 on the bike and I don’t think the CHP is going to like that too much either. Is there going to be a place in yard for a fire pit to grill up the meat from that dead bull? It may be easier to just order out.

Finewest
06-25-2007, 11:40 AM
Aye matie! All thy inquiries shall be revealed in good time and the credit card be damned!

It is a STOC group get together at a ST accessories manufacturer's shop. As for tools, and such it is what it is. Tom's has some tools, other guys have some tools. Sometimes somebody shows up with tire changing gear. You never know.

Buying TurboCity STuff is not required, but what the heck... He does make the best ST STuff, and best of all you'll get free shipping for picking it up! And Tom's great experience, not to mention other members, wealth of information and fix-its! Free pizza (with an optional donation) and soda! It's a no-brainer!

So point thy bow to southern climes matey,
and give up all hope ye who sail here...
Farkling is a credit line's tempest,
for monsters dwell far and near!

My attendance at this event has been threatened. Yesterday I dropped my bike off at the stealers (Motoworld of El Cajon) due to scrubbing brakes. I've changed the brake pads, disassembled and cleaned the brake calipers and flushed and bled the brake system trying to resolve the issue myself. Nothing worked.

It's my feeling that my chances of having my baby back before this event is small. I was looking forward to the ride up with you Fred, but unless Murphy is distracted by annoying someone else, I'm probably not going to make it.

I probably should have mentioned that it was leaking radiator fluid too, might as well get that fixed while it’s in the shop.

<heavy sigh> :(

dmulk
06-26-2007, 07:34 PM
Brakes are (on anything - cars and bikes) are usually pretty easy... :)

If you want to actually go through the whole fluid bleeding thing, I can probably bring my bleeder, but it will require someone to have a compressor there.

The other alternative is to do it manually... but we'll need George to ride in from Kingman for that one.... :)

06-26-2007, 10:38 PM
My fingers are crossed too Fred. As you can see from my previous post, I've pretty much covered the easy stuff.

vossman, funny you should chime in here. This issue started right after the ERC that I attended. I don't know if it's connected to all that emergency stopping we did during the course or not.

Actually the brakes work just fine, they brake with good authority and smoothly. What they do is scrub hard enough to get the disk ringing, and that is driving me nuts (go ahead Fred and mention that it's a short drive for me). It's really only noticeable as slow speeds <20mph. I notice it a lot in parking lots and in stop and go traffic.

Degrease/deglaze the rotors, replace the pads. Costs about $70 when you mail order the pads. Not all of the $70 is a loss because the existing pads have some wear anyway.

I will probably end up doing that. The $70 investment is much better than chanceing it.
The rotors are clean and grease free now. The pads are dry (they no longer leave a residue) but they are probably contaminated as you say. Wife'll be a little cranky that I messed up the brakes but oh well. What do you mean by deglaze?

I noticed the wheels don't spin as free as they used to and the barkes are constanly dragging with a few grabby spots in the front.
Not sure if it's the same issue DTEEL mentioned but it certainly is a far cry from their behavior prior to the washing.
Dana, will you keep me informed of what your dealer says?? DId you try for a warranty claim?

Thanks for the advice folks.

dmulk
06-27-2007, 03:03 PM
When you say "grabby spots" is this when you freely spin the wheel with out applying brake?

I guess it's possible that one or both of the rotors are warped....

<D>
PS: How's the computer problem going? Get it cleaned up?

dteel
06-27-2007, 06:55 PM
Just got back from the STealer's and no warranty work this time. Seems that when I replaced the rear brake pads that I didn't get the inside pad in properly (not fitted it the c shaped clip up front). According to the tech, it was cocked down and rubbing on the wheel hub. Since it was not in the holder properly it caused the forward puck to extend unevenly. Since the housing is aluminum and the puck is stainless steel it created an oblong wear in the caliper body. This in turn is causing the puck to not retract all the way which is causing the scrubbing. Now to replace the rear brake caliper assembly and brake pads they wanted $650. I thanked them and told them to total up my bill for the diagnoses and rode my bike home. I just finished ordering all the parts from Service Honda (http://www.servicehonda.com/) and my total was $258. That and $9 shipping and about $8 for brake fluid and I'll be good to go.

When Byron and I mounted the rear tire, we had one heck of a time keeping those darn brake parts lined up. Normally you wouldn't need to fiddle with it during tire replacement but one of the clips fell out when we were trying to replace the caliper over the disk. When I replaced the brake pads, I didn't remove the caliper as it isn't necessary for pad replacement. Sure wish Byron would have been around for that.

So there you have it. I've created my very own problem this time. I hope I have better luck with making repairs. I know I will be using my inspection mirror to ensure proper pad placement this time!

PS: How's the computer problem going? Get it cleaned up?

Exactly what you said. There has always been a slight grabby spot. I hear it when pushing the bike with out the motor running. Now it's quite a bit louder and it appears to be grabbing harder. I can barely get 1 to 1.5 revolutions on the front if I give it a good manual spin.

Computer is still acting up, just haven't had time to fix it. Someone told me to uninstall the CD in device mgr , disconnect it from the MB and then restart and then let it reinstall itself. I aint that smart to do that.

Sorry for the late chime in about being at the event.

Dan,

Yes, I will be there with my truck and NoMar. I've been driving the truck for the last 3 days because my rear tire is in the "ride only in case of emergency" state. :(

Tire delivery is supposed to be today. :)

I think we should be able to take care of a couple of other tires for you. :D If you are bringing just the tires and wheels instead of riding the bike down with tires, make sure you bring the axles too as my balancer uses the axle. I have a few weights but if you have any it might be a good idea to bring them.

Besides needing the tires changed on my bike I figured there might be some interest to see how they work.

See everyone in the morning.

It was 97F coming home and no real heat issues with my ankles (yay!). Of course, when I was leaving on Katella I had the stop light at Main and the headers were really smoking! I had a few people point at the bike (what smoke? that is normal, this is a really hot bike!).
It was great to meet everybody. In six months it will be time for the throttle body sync and maybe something else I haven't thought of yet.
Thanks again Turbo Tom!

A big thanks to Tom and organizers. It was a great crowd.

I learned a lot by watching work being done, and had a great time browsing the farkles on display.

I did not even know about the "farkle cable" that Tom sells - I never saw it on the web site. It looks wonderful!

I made the 2.2 mile trip, and it was well worth while :06biker:

Soon I will be placing my orders at Turbo City.

What a great turn-out! Again you guys and gals showed up for the call! I counted 25 bikes and almost double the folk!

At least ten bikes being worked on at once with Turbo-Tom hopping between them all giving his vast knowledge and experience for free. I never saw him take a break! So a special THANK YOU TO TURBO-CITY AND TURBO-TOM! And pizza and sodas! It's a no-brainer!

Tom said that he would be willing to hold a STOC TECHSTOC every 6 months! I think that would be great and very generous.

I never saw so many ST's in one place before and lots of them torn down with fairings removed and the guys straining over their own bike's innards. All the years models were represented and even a couple of BMW's (GT, RT), VF4, 1 ST1100.

I got photos and will post soon.

So once again a thank you to TURBOCITY
and the wonderful members and friends of
STOC and ST-Owners.com!

A big hand for us!

Morning all! :hat1:

I had a great time at Turbo City yesterday. I was surprised to see that many bikes there!

Turbo Tom was very generous with the cold drinks, pizza, a helping hand all over the place and with departing me with some of my :money1: I made on the sale of my V65 Sabre...

It was well worth the trip for me and I have thrown together a little report and pictures here:

I've finally finished resizing my photos and getting them posted on the gallery (http://www.st-owners.com/pp_gallery/showgallery.php?cat=550). Hope you enjoy the photos.

We had an interesting encounter with a family from India at our meeting spot (rest stop north of Oceanside) who were very taken with our bikes and wanted to get pictures of their wives sitting on the bike. I don't think that pretty black 2006 (John Diego's bike) will ever be the same!

It was good riding with the guys on the way up. I think Fred (finewest) was surprised about the number that showed when he posted a map of the meeting spot! As Mellow so frequently says, post it and they will come! Having the radios sure makes riding with a group work better, it didn't keep us from getting separated, but it sure let each group know what was happening when it happened.

Tom, thank you, your staff and Rhonda so very much for opening your doors to us once again. You guys are the embodiment of hospitality.

And last to Fred, who couldn't give his junk...um...err.... great stuff away! Thanks for giving this event the push it needed to get it off the ground. You're the best friend!

As always, it was a great event. There were plenty of people there with a wide variety of accessories on their bikes, and were very helpful when questions were asked about the installations.
Since I live close by, I decided to take all the plastic panels off at my house the night before, and rode the bike in naked. This was a good move because it was easier to get right to work on the bike, and with so many bikes being worked on all at once, I didn't have to worry about losing any tiny parts in the busy shop area.
My buddy Dallas installed a new Fuel Pressure Regulator and K&N Air Filter, and Turbo Tom adjusted the throttle body sync while the tank was up. During the sync, you could hear the motor smooth right out.
Dallas took his bike for a test ride, and when he got back, his comment was "Wow".
I was able to track down a broken electrical wire, and adjusted the counter balancers again (they were ok).
Tom and Rhonda, thanks for letting us take over your shop again, and your hospitality is just amazing!
Jefro.

I want to say a special thanks to Tom and all of his Crew for everything they did. Tom installed my top box Rack for me and I really appreciate all of his help. I had a fantastic time and have many Ideas for future purchases. I have Tom's T-Stat, Fuel Pressure Regulator and Top Box Rack. I've found all of his products to be top quality and I especially like the FPR. The FPR made a big difference in how my bike rode, I love it. I had a great time meeting the other members of this Forum and now have some Faces and Smiles to put with the names. Yes George, You were right, I did recognize You. It was good to meet FineWest Fred. On my way home, I took the scenic route up the coast and then back to Clovis. I had a Great Ride and the scenery was fantastic. 650 mile day, not bad huh? I do have one question for you locals. Is there always a 50-60 MPH Oscillating Cross Wind on Hwy 101 along the Ocean? I had to re-tighten my helmet straps twice because the wind was trying to rip it off of my head.

I Just want to say thanks again, to Tom and his Crew, for all they did. I had a GREAT TIME, Thanks

Yeah... when the interior valleys are hot the wind blows on-shore and when the interior cools the wind blows off-shore. The hotter the interior valleys the stronger the winds.
There are 2 time periods (one during daylight, the other at night) when there is no wind; but, I don't remember them being noticeable unless you're on a sailboat.

What a weekend! Good thing I had to work today because I need the rest. :D

I couldn't believe the GREAT! turn-out. Each time the numbers seem to magically increase. OK, so it's not magic just simply the word getting around of what fun days these are. In fact it's one of few times when you will probably find this many bikes together and everyone is having a good time without the wheels even turning, tiring balancing excluded. :)

I still couldn't talk Fred into stripping off Veronica's ..., sorry Fred I'll stop before it gets to graphic. :crackup We can do it when the rest of the parts get here. Thanks again for ordering that part for me.

Dan, glad Lee's bike is riding better with the new front tire. George, If I don't have some cones when needed next I will get in touch with you.

Lot's of familiar faces, new faces to go with familiar screen names and even more new names and faces. There will be a test later so remember your name so you can tell me when I ask.

Tom, as has already been said many times, Thanks! to you, your wife and your staff for putting up with us and making this another memorable day.

I'm glad everyone had a good time.

Thanks to Fred for taking care of the promotion part of this event. This one has the best.

It is all of the people that attended that maked this such a great time.

I am glad that I could help so many people enjoy something like "working" on the rides.

We will set up to do it again around the first of the year.

Thanks to everyone. Tom
