I've read many discussions about the PIAA lights, but very little to none about the HELLA or others. I read on Mark Lawrence's site about the HELLAs, but I believe that he stated that mounting brackets were not available. Has anyone mounted them on the ST1300? If so, what model, where, & how?

Terry -

I also have read from Mark's site about Hella lights. I decided to upgrade my lighting in 3 stages: 1) Sylvania Silverstar bulbs to replace OEM headlights. 2) Hella FF50 Fog lights and 3) PIAA 910's with a Dick Seng mount. I have completed #1 and #2 and I am so impressed that I may or may not complete #3.
Since the Hella lights are fog lights, I knew I wanted to mount low...on the forks, rather than up near headlights. I fabricated a mount that would mount behind front reflectors (thus hiding about half of mount behind reflectors) and would utilize same nut/bolt that holds on reflector (thus no new holes through bike). I wired these to a 3-way toggle (always off, On only with low beams, and always on with ignition). I've had this set-up for about 10,000 miles and it has held up well.
If I do anything further in future, I may purchase Dick Seng mounts and mount a matching pair of Hella FF50 Driving lights rather than the PIAA lights just underneath signal lights. I feel that the Hella lights offer the most "bang for the buck".

Cheers! Allan

Alan, Thanks for your response. I was beginning to think that no one on this site had tried the Hellas. Your pictures are extremely enlightening. It looks like even I could fabricate brackets to mount the Hellas at the fork reflector positions.

Mike, Where did you mount your Xenon lights? What type of brackets did you use?

Thanks Gentlemen!!! Maybe your responses will prime some more discussion on this topic.

Up until today I had some generic 100w spots mounted on BLM brackets.
I juST changed to a pair of Hella Optilux 1300 :) lamps. I removed the STock 55w bulbs and put in a pair of 100w.
The light pattern is pure spot and more intense/pin-point than the generics.

I will not be able to teST them tonight cuz I don't venture out on NYE!

One of these days I will get a digital camera :|

Yes Putt I kept the BLM brackets, they put the lights juST above the mirrors. The BLMs have an arm that faSTens inside the faring and sneaks out through the little vent hole opposite the turn signal lenses. No cutting.

Dond,

Be a little cautious about the 100W bulbs in the Hella's until you are confident they aren't overheating. In his review Will England says Hella won't warranty anything over 55W. But of course they are cheap enough compared to PIAA that you may not care.

Thanks for the input Jim.

I use the extra lights only as needed for 'ditch illumination' or? They adjuST easily by hand, even while riding to fill in what little the 55/60's don't. Hopefully the heat won't be an issue while moving at ST warp speed :-)

I also use them to remind a$$holes to dim their lights after the normal hi-beam flash fails.

Under $40 makes them almoST disposable.

Putt, when you inSTAll them the brackets will fit through the vent hole..it doesn't seem like it will fit but by rotating and figuring out the right moves it will go in. I removed only the windshield cowl. I do have slender hands tho'.
When you have to remove the middle cowl down the road, you do not have to remove the brackets...In spite of what it looks like the cowls will come off and back on (it IS tight). When you get the bolts started a 10mm/1/4" drive rachet will be a time saver..I used a 12 pt box and it took a while.

Ya can't take it with ya Putt!

:sun1:

The lamps were less than 1/2 the price of the brackets. :banghead:

Lots of wildlife over here, Pan... A 100Kilo deer will do quite a bit
of damage to a ST..... Need to see them, to avoid them..

No problem. Hella's are very efficient and coupled with Turbo City over the light brackets - make an awesome combination and put out lots-of-lumens.
