For all the wisdom and knowledge -- and good friends here... I am grateful

I have been studying the wire diagrams and processes posted here for a good while -- when the quick silver exits from routine maintenance early next week... I am going to attempt my first real install project --

The venerable Stebel Nautilus Compact lane change re-arranger and better-than-generic aural warning device...

I have figured out the surgical processes for the mounting area-- and I think I can handle the various kinds of fasteners that hold the plastic in place....

I have the 12ga wire... inline fuse... terminal fasteners, etc.

My relay looks healthy (not rusted or broken)... And I read somewhere to test the horn directly from the battery before mounting...

Soooo... I am down to only a couple of last minute Q&A's....

1. The main +12V power tap (12 ga wire - 15 amp inline fuse!) from the battery to the relay -- What kind of fastener or hook-up is used on this end of the transaction -- haven't seen any really detailed pics of a safe/secure methods...?? Is placement obvious??

2. Likewise -- BEFORE doing any of this electrical magic -- should the battery be completely unhooked from the electrical system to avoid surges and shocks?? Does this have other ramifications like -- resetting the digital display, etc.. or similar side-effects??

3. Are there any mysteries or pitfalls to routing the 12ga tap forward to the mounting area? Can I route/fasten the new wire in and amongst the existing harness/routing??

Any other advice or counsel to a farkle-newbie?
I confess -- This will be my very first mirror-cover whack...

As always thanks in advance...

I Just installed my Stebel horn this last weekend. Get ready to make your neighbors jump! It is really quite simple. I always disconnect my negative battery terminal when messing with electrical. you will have to reset your time, etc. I ran the hot from the battery to the relay. the two leads from the stock horn I connected to the opposite terminals on the relay and the hot from the remaining terminal to the + on the bottom of the horn. The ground is the last connection (not counting connecting the hot to the battery after all else is done. The horn fits nicely in the faring where it looks like a speaker could go. I mounted the relay higher up next to the horn after seeing some pics of what the weather can do to it if mounted on the end of the stalk where the old horn was. I used only a portion of the wiring that came with the horn.

I just installed a Stebel in mine. No problems, it works fine. It's definitely easier taking off the plastic than it is putting it back.
Here are a couple of ideas that I've used over the years.
As you take fasteners off put them in small groups in little baggies and make a label or note on where they came from - "Top inner cowl", "glove box area", "mirror area" etc. You can also take digital photos at different steps.

I installed my Stebel Horn yesterday and it has already paid off!! A car cut me off on US 1 leaving Florida. Cars get out of your way when you lay on that thing!!! Use ear plugs, it's damn loud.

I installed mine last weekend and already used it three times (my wife was totally amazed when I tested it in the garage....short blasts of course to save the ears for rock and roll). One of them was right outside my home when I was attempting to turn left onto the street where I live. Stupid in a big truck who was about half way out in the intersection turning left. He gave me no alternaive but to cut into the inside of him by the passenger door. I laid on the horn and the stupid stopped in his tracks. Stayed there until I pulled into my driveway. AWESOME!!!

Since installing a Stebel on my ST1100 I have had numerous occasions where it helped in getting the box herders attention. Unfortunately, it does not always work. Last week I was turning off a busy street at about a 45/50 degree angle when a Grandmother pulled out of a garden center on the right corner. I barely had time to hit the horn but she said she never heard it! I was very lucky, the stubby wing did a great job, nothing touched the ground except the wing and the left mirror and the housing popped off. The bike ended up less than a foot from the side of her car. I hit on my billfold and rolled. I wear a Joe Rocket mesh armor jacket and only my hip is sore. 2 guys from a garage next to the garden center rushed out to help me get the bike up right and when I asked the lady if she heard my horn they said they heard it in their shop with a big fan running! The reason she didn't hear it? As she was turning out, she was actually partly turned toward the back seat where her 2 yr old grandson was pitching a very loud fit! No horn can compete with a 2 yr old for loudness, believe me I have 8 grandchildren!:biker:

Has anyone thought about putting a second Stebel on their bike? I was wondering (haven't looked myself yet) if there is room on the left side of the bike in about the same loctation. Also, will the mount on the horn spin 180 degrees? Just some thoughts....
