I just received my power plate (and ground block) I was wondering if any of you that have installed a relay controlled unit (of any manufacture), where did you tap into to get the switched 12 volts to activate the relay..

What I would really like to know is perhaps the location of the wire you utilized not just the particular circuit.

Any input would be appreciated, I have got it stripped down right now to do this add on and to locate the coolant leak(water pump :( ) and to change the brake fluid.

Any input would be appreciated,

Dave

That sounds like what I have on my bike. Anything off the power plate will be switched power if its like mine. There is a seperate wire to attach to (Battery Tender) with power all the time.

I guess I need to re-state my question. I am looking for a 12V switched(ignition) source to power the relay which will then allow the power plate to be energized.

I have my fuse block too but haven't tried installing since I'm waiting for the electrical windshield kit for my '03. See the links below. Adam's site is an awesome source for ST diy's and Mark's site is just plain awesome. I am planning to use Adam's suggestions for wiring and try to locate it in the spot shown in the photo in the calsci link. Good luck. Take lots of pictures, there may be a large number of people planning the same mod. - john

Why not just grab switched power from the quartet harness. I plan on doing some electrical to the bike this month and will get the connectors to tap into that harness.

Doh! I should have thought of that!! I do have the harnes (for Electric Windshield) and when I ordered the Power strip I also ordered a selection of the Hitachi connectors... :crackup

Hi Dave,

If you, or anyone, has a source for the matching connectors on the quartet harness please share with the rest of us.

I don't want to tap wires and would really like to have a clean solution and use connectors that plug into the harness.

Thanks,
Curt

I've got the same power block. Mounted in the same location as the calsci photo. Tapped into my rear light. Works great!!

I have a friend looking into the quartet harness connection.
If is able to find a matching plug I will post what and where to get it.

Has some of these connectors, also.

Those that we can't get, seem to be the 2 at the mirror, turn signal junction.
Very small, single and dual pin connectors. :cus:

Until I can find the 2 small connectors, I'm using Posi-Taps, so I don't have to cut wires, just strip back some tubing.

For those looking for 12V distribution blocks I saw one today on the LDRider list that looks very interesting and very small. Down towards to bottom. It comes in 3 or 7 circuits and can have hot and switched. Also includes the relay.

Has anyone used this accessory wire harness ???

Looks like a good idea if you hate to just cut and splice.
got the idea from here

That I think is just the standard Honda quartet harness that most members are using on there bikes.

I just saw this- sorry if it is a little late. Here is a part of a comment I posted on the other ST site.

"To make a long story a little less long, I ended up using the power lead for the high/low beam switch. For what it worth, it is a blue wire with a white strip and 2 silver (gray?) tics. Is fairly easy to locate in the connector mess located just in front of the left coil. It is part of a 9 pin connector."

Dond was concerned that the draw on the circuit would be too great, but note that I only energize the relay off the headlight circuit. Minimal draw IMHO (and according to the spec's for the relay). I would take dond's comments to heart if I were trying to power anything more than miniscule draw off the headlight circuit.
I have had good luck with the blocks I installed and I couldn't find a circuit in the quartet harness that cut out when cranking the engine. (Not saying there isn't one, I just couldn't find one.) I really wanted this feature as I was powering the heated optons off of this block.

that is exactly how I hooked up my heated grips. I picked up switched power from one of those little lights right above the headlights. Then I used that power to energize a Radio Shack relay (160ma coil draw). Then powered the control switch through the contacts of the relay. Power comes right from the battery, through a 5 amp fuse, through the closed contacts on the relay, through the switch, then finally to the grips.

I was also looking for a fused power connector block, with power and ground screw connectors for accessories etc, plus with a cover that could be labelled. I don't like the other ones I previewed because there is no insulating cover. I saw this one at Overtons. It uses 3AG glass fuses that are pretty easy to get. Haven't bought it yet, wanted to know what you guys think ?
