View Full Version : Beating it to death - yet another wobble idea...

I have read just about any thread regarding the wobble and I suppose there is not nor will there ever be a conclusive report.

However, it seems the subject of clothing has never been addressed.

I notice that whichever jacket I wear, if it is not zipped up tightly, I feel a tendency for the jacket to pull side-to-side while at speed.

Is it possible the jacket or other clothing could induce an oscillation impinging on the rider, which then is coupled to the steering?

Just another bizarre idea.

Yep it can happen. Too often riders have the tendancy to grip the bars too tight. When they get a little shove by a wind gust it gets directly transmitted to the bars and......................... a shake waddle and roll can be started.

Then there's tire pressure, tire condition, crosswinds, "dirty air" turbulence from traffic, rear suspension settings, riding stance, windshield location, blah blah blah. So many variables, so little consistency.

Myself, I have never experienced any instability that I found worrisome, even during my brief forays into triple digits. I will say, however, that crosswinds and dirty air definitely affect the bike, but it's easy to control. Long periods of crosswinds, especially if they're gusty, can be a lot of work.

I did have worrisome wobble at 80+ with the factory suspension settings and the windshield half way or higher. Got an Aeroflow, that seemed to help a little then hardening up the rear pre-load alot and the dampening a little helped tremendously.

I did also notice some wobble when I had my Cycloak 3/4 jacket on with the arm pit vents open and zipped up close to my neck. The incoming air had no place to go and was inflating my shoulders like a baloon ! This made me "bounce" around a little and induced some wobble. I unzipped the jacket somewhat and all was better and deflated.

Boy howdy on cross winds. But I have noticed just a tad difference on how I can disturb the air to the side behind my clearview at highway speeds of 70 to 80. I can set-up a tad take my left hand off the bar, move it to the center and get a difference in the wind turbulance in the "cockpit" especially if I have either of my jackets zipped down past center. And if you have the sleeve zipper open on the coat you can bet that if ya straighten your arm a bit the BO's gone too! I know,I know, the 1100 is prolly more susceptible to wind and dirty air witch you guys on 1300 never experiance..:duck: But I still love my RED Machine...
