View Full Version : The Goldwing Question Determines ST or FJR?

Mean

I was thinking about my own situation and why I like the ST more than the FJR. The FJR is always talked about as being more like a normal motorcycle, folks coming off of sport bikes will feel more at home, etc. But I was wondering if whether or not you like or see yourself on a GL1800 one day is the factor that separates the two owner groups. I really like Wings and I think it is why I prefer STs.

Just a thought,
G

I think you are close... I personally thing that most people coming off cruisers or bikes where you sit more upright are prone to like the ST and most coming off of lighter sportbikes like the VFR may prefer the FJR as they are used to that riding position.

Well, when you see how most ST owners farkle up their bikes, I'm amazed they didn't just buy a 'wing and be done with it. They're so obviously closet 'wing riders at heart but for some odd reason not man enough to admit it...

... as you'll see in some responses to this :D

or perhaps just not man enough to handle one... :D

Oh my... I guess I'm feeling controversial today lol.

Or, in some cases not woman enough to admit that we really want a Wing, But we are afraid it is too big.

Well, my friend, now you have... okay, it's not a cappuccino maker but
an stove probably qualifies as more of a machine than that.

Boy Dave, when you are right, you are right...

I have my ST just about farkled to the fair thee well. I have one (1) auxilary light switch, for the fork mounted lights, and, well, uhhhhh, I used to have a windshield bag on it. Does that make me a wing man?

My previous ride, the Venture, had more stuff on it than your wing does...so I know which way I am headed:)

In fact, I think some guys can't decide whether it's a 'wing or a hooligan that they really want.....:)

ANSWER TO THE ORIGINAL QUESTION!

Nahh, most of us just really like the best MC ever built. And it's more than good enough!

So when I become man enough to get the Wing I've always wanted, will I un-farkle my ST???? :) And can somebody tell me the difference between this ....:ggw1: and this...:couch1: :D

I would probably have a wing if it had not been for my wife when we went to look at bikes! I said lets take a look at the gold wing and got the its an :old1: bike. I did not say a word just said ok and got the ST which is better for me at this time in my life. A wing may be my next bike though, who knows by that time? Dont plan on changing anytime soon...Love the ST

I tried out the FJR, ST and Wing before I went with the ST.

The FJR was nice (but it's not a Honda) and I liked the slightly lower seat height but I found the front of the seat too wide to be comfortable for longer rides. The Wing is incredibly nimble and definitely grin inducing (riding down the road with the Kinks blasting out of the radio - Lola, L-O-L-A, Lola - is definitely fun), but the seating position is incredibly uncomfortable for my knees (I know, it's weird, I'm the only person in the world who's knees are more crimped by the Wing than the ST). The ST was just the most comfortable of the three for me. The ergonomics are just right and the performance is stellar.

Kind of like Goldilocks and the three bears - it's just right.

We'll all be old one day, and may still want to keep riding. So the Wing will always have a place. :)

You may have a point. I came from a cruiser and while I did not get to test ride the ST and FJR, I did sit on them and found the ST more comfortable, but then the fact it was another Honda and that I had already pretty made up my mind I wanted an ST after reading this forum and about Bamarider's love affair with his ST. :D

I never considered a Wing for a moment. I was just not ready to go there (still not)--they seemed huge! But I will say this, about every Wing Nut I see has a big smile on his/her face. My sister and her second husband rode all over the country on a Wing and loved it. I might consider going to a Wing someday, but I doubt it. My wife doesn't ride with me so I really don't need that posh back seat. Heck, if I had a Wing and she saw that seat, she probably would want to ride all the time and heckle me. :D :D

And lets not forget the used MC market: I have seen STs every so often, but I have yet to see a used FJR for sale. Since I always seem to be buying used equipment, that kind of rules out the Yamaha.

Since I've added my Cruise Control and GPS and Bar Risers and a comfortable Russel seat, my Wing buddies claim I'm trying to turn my bike into a Wing.
NO WAY DUDE!
I don't want no stinkin 950 lb mosikle to wrestle with, along with the little wifey and full trunk and saddlebags when on a long ride. (although I kinda like the idea of having a radio with an MP3 capable CD player).

It does seem big at first but after a couple of rides you settle right in.....

The Wing is big when you sit on it. It shrinks considerably when you get it moving and if you carry a passenger, there is no equal.

I'm not so certain most owners farkle extensively, in spite of what you may read here. Many of us leave the bike pretty much stock; perhaps a better seat and grips. Some of us prefer the sound of grasshoppers bashing against the electrically adjustable windscreen to satellite radio.

No doubt the GL is the preferred bike for 2 up couch touring, but the notion that it is in the same league as the ST when it comes to 1 up sport-touring is just wishful thinking. To get the ST to ride like the GL, I'd have to attach the top case and fill it with 300 lbs of chrome bits.

I'm 6'4" and have more room on the ST. And if you are an Iron Butt rider, an ST flat gets the job done in the most efficient manner. I once considered a 'Wing and a friend of mine told me I shouldn't, because those were for guys who couldn't pee standing up anymore.

Personally, I think the FJR is basically a sports bike fully wrapped in tupperware. The ST is designed ground up for long haul touring!

That's a lot of dough ray mee!

The Wing seems a long way off from the ST to me....haven't really considered the Wing yet although I realize it is
an incredible machine and capable of more performance heroics than most people realize...

...but I have for many years wanted to see the Wing six
cylinder on a ST size bike or a cruiser...and low and behold
it came in the mail today on the cover of Honda Red Rider
mag...its a concept bike called an EV06 and I really want one....incredible looking and got to be much faster than
I can handle.
It's like a naked bike with the horizontally opposed six...
I mean wow!

My other fantasy design is in there also the CB1100F, a naked stylized inline four...I think this platform should be
expanded upon, elaborated, celebrated...customized....I do think it should have a single swing arm and drive instead of the chain though....

My two favorite fantasy bikes arrive in living color on the same day...wonder what that's about....

PS rode the FJR recently, a lot of fun, and agree with the observation that it is a Sport Bike with bags...

I notice your age. In about 30 years, you will understand this.

It is multi-dimensional. Mostly asleep. Poor balance, even when awake. Inability of eyes to withstand assault of bathroom light. Inability, perhaps, to reliably start or stop the process. Just having a seat and relaxing in the dark is easier. Believe me. And no mess in the morning.

I've sat on a Wing and was very surprised by its balance sitting still...reverse really is a great feature..someday they will come with an automatic and automatic drop down wheels..still in love with the ST but the future may hold a Wing.

There might be a Gold Wing in my future. Before a final desision, I will rent one for a couple days.

The Airbag model seems like a good idea. Unfortunately, some accesory connectors are different than other models, repairs are more complicated and the airbag might be in the way for my GPS.

But wait, most accessores are on there, Honda makes aux lights, etc, a new Honda should not require repairs, "it's a Honda", and the GPS is built in (at least a crippled one.)

Humm, Black GL1800 Airbager and Back ST1100, gonna be tight in the garage.

Its an ST (sport touring), it fills the gap between a true sport bike and a Gold wing.
