Has anyone thought about using a set of frame sliders (see attachment) cut through the wings for highway pegs? Some of them look pretty good in a roller skate kind of way!

Placing some non-skid tape on the sliders would make them hold your boots without slipping.

Critter on the MSN board did the non-skid on top of his wings and uses that for highway pegs.

It might also help prevent damage in the event of a drop.

What'cha Think?

I saw a thread I think it was on the other St group. There is a guy who made fold out pegs that come off the crash bar. He split the plastic cover and the peg attached to the bar and folded in and out. I looked very good.

I'm not sure about frame sliders... still trying to visualize where they'd go and still look good on the bike... Might just look like someone nailed a skateboard wheel to the tip over wings.... guess I'd have to see 'em first.

I'm still trying to figure out what a frame slider is. Can't picture in my head what you guys are pictureing in your heads because I don't know what a frame slider is. Anyone have a picture or a link to see what a frame slider is?

A frame slider is a plastic puck that the hotdogs (or wannbe hotdogs :D ) attach to the crash points of their hot sportbikes to protect the body work when they crash. The users of these devices must be aware of their riding abilities, or lack thereof, because they are planning on crashing!

We St riders already have our built in crash bars, AKA wings, so we don't need sliders.

Speak for yourself, Alan

Some of us old farts can't get out of the yard on two wheels. :crackup

Check out my garage pics.

Ok...I get it now. Now I can picute what you guys are talkin' about....thanks Charlie.

Anyway, those don't look that bad!. The highway peg with a frame slider idea might actually work if you could get a long enough frame slider. Also someone would have to tip the bike over to see what kind of clearance we got at the tip over wing so we would know if it would scrape the road while taking a sharp turn.

As a current sportbike rider I resent those remarks you ST-riding old fart.........wait a minute, I guess I am an ST-riding old fart as well, I have to keep reminding myself of that.

Actually, frame sliders are designed to protect the frame in the event of a lowside and the bike ends up sliding down the pavement. They are not designed to protect plastic, BUT that happens to be an added benifit that most people misunderstand and think is the MAIN purpose of these farkles.

I don't ever go out and plan on crashing, but if I do it would be nice to have protection for that expensive frame - knowing that all the plastic bodywork will most likely self-grenade on impact. Having to buy a few hundred dollars of plastic is bad enough without having to shell out a couple grand for another frame.

Everyone I ride with tells me there are 2 kinds of riders......those that have crashed, and those that are going to. So I guess I am a member of the later club and hope to keep it that way. :p

Since the flip out highway pegs are not going into production anytime soon, I just was looking for temporary alternatives.

Being a card carrying old-fart, I resemble that remark. :)

And I have tested the ability of my tip over wings to protect the bodywork! They worked well, only had to replace the plastic cover on the wing itself. I considered using frame sliders as foot rests on the ST, but I found them to be pretty expensive so I build my own folding highway pegs.

Alan,
Have you ever gotten a peg to scrape on a sharp turn?
I'm just wondering if the peg would scrape before the highway peg or vise versa. I've gotten a peg down once and I'm not even that aggresive in my riding so if the highway peg hits before the stock peg scrapes that would really be limiting to some riders. Just a though. I have eyed it up and it does not look like you could have any more than a 2 inch projection from the plastic wing before it would scrape first, but I didn't actually tip the bike to find out.

Below are 2 pics of an ST11 on The Dragon that I found on www.killboy.com (http://www.killboy.com) site. You can see that this rider, and a lot of others who get this low and don't realize it, would possibly get their foot folded up in the flip out style highway pegs - IF you were crazy enough to be using them on a twistie road.
