Looking for our Canadian brothers to review my proposed route from Buffalo to Detroit. We will be riding on thursday, June 14. Leaving about 7am in the morning. MapSource shows this route at 7.5 hours. Need to be thereby 4pm, so possibly this route might be a little too scenic. You can tell me where to trim, but I'm looking to be off the truck routes as much as possible.

Peace Bridge
QEW to Nethby Road (looks like marker 11 on QEW)
Nethby becomes Towline Tunnell, runs south of Welland
north a few blocks on Prince Charles
west on River Road, on south side of Welland river, through Francis Goldwing camp
southwest on RR-7
3 into Dunville
RR-3 southwest out of Dunville
continue on RR-3 around and past Port Dover
RR-3 ends at RR-16
Northwest on RR-16 a few blocks, then west on RR-45
continue RR-45 west, south of Aylmer
a short distance on 3 and CR-20, to connect with 401
Remainder of trip on 401, seems unavoidable at that point

I'd especially like feedback if anyone is familiar with River Road. What is the speed there? Looks winding along the river, but might be too much time.

Please let me know your thoughts and suggestions. I am not at all familiar with these routes, just what I picked off the mapping program, looking for roads with curves, which are very few in that area!

I've ridden River Road from Welland to Dunnville a few times and it is a good ride..... regular highway 80 km/hr speed limit (you can go 99 km/hr or 61 mph, and not get a ticket). All the roads you're on are the same speed limit. Once you get past Port Dover on RR-3 take 24 up to Simcoe if you like (MapSource calls it Norfolk) and take Hwy 3 west again. From here on, I haven't ridden these roads. Or you can stay down on RR-45/CR-45 if it cuts your time significantly. But, if on 3 you get to Aylmer, stay on it, kind of skirt through/around St. Thomas, then parallel the 401 all the way to the Ambassador Bridge. 401 superslab is flat and boring there anyway, but if you want to make up speed, by all means take it. Speed limit 100 Km/hr, you can go 119 safely (72 mph). They do enforce the speeds on that stretch of the 401 past London. Remember you have 7% speedo error, so add on a little bit.

I rode the RT3 once, from Niagara to Windsor, and would not do that again.
It wasn't scenic at all (as I remember), had slow traffic and cops and generally, was a mistake....
Your experience may vary.
I know the 401 is boring, but you can actually make a decent time.

I go between Windsor and Niagara at least twice a year (there and back) on my way to the Americade, always on the 401.....

If you want the scenic Canada, you'd have to go around Lake Huron....:03biker:

I think the Niagara Blvd was recommended here before. I'd take that from the Peace Bridge to the "420" and then to the QEW.....

I just noticed on my MapSource, that 7.5 hours was from my home, which is 3 hours east of Buffalo. That means an easy ride on the route above, even with time for stops. Given that, I'll probably stay on 3 as long as possible, avoiding 401.

Peter, I'm not planning to use 3, I'm talking about RR-3. which parallels a few miles to the south.

The RR3 looks even worse on the map......he, he.....:D

Good luck and have fun !

Actually I may be still in Windsor on the 14th.......

If you see a siver ST1100 with a dork riding it - honk !

And if you see me......:07biker:

First thing is dont forget the TWO border crossings you'll need to do.. these can be fairly quick or long.. Usually not too bad but it does add at least another hour to your route.. Also I would never try to talk somebody out of comming north but...if you like rural farmland scenery then you'll like the ride. Pleasent enough ride, but dont count on twisties or even hills, as you wont get much of it in that part of Ontario. RR3 does take longer to ride than it looks, as you go through many little towns etc which really eat up the time, in fact my buddy and I will be doing it to get to windsor area in a couple of weeks, but just to get away from the 401. The roads in PA are FAR NICER..
