Seems to work all right with a little modification needed to the mounting base. I uses a PDA cradle and put a magnet on the base which attaches to the tank.

How do you start the bike?...Do you need to remove the PDA to start it?

Photo doesn't show very well but the unit sits ahead of the bars enough for this. Clearance for full lock to lock is all right also.
I bought this http://www.thepdamart.com/inc/pdetail?v=1&pid=134
and fastened a magnet to its base. Took a magnet out of an old speaker and if its not strong enough will replace it. Freezing rain today so no test ride yet. Should work in the truck also I hope by added a small piece of metal inside the dash.
I selected this method of GPS because of the many other things the PDA will do for you.

Be careful though. As a PDA, Pocket PC owner/nut of many years these thing do not like getting wet. Major drawback to using a PDA on a motorcycle

Thanks fellows. Well the mounting cradle has some rubber feet that grasp onto the PDA so don't think vibration is going to be an issue but hey, may be wrong about that.
I ordered an adapter for the power to it that plugs into the bikes system so it can run for ever off the bikes power. I do believe that water will be an issue but not much rain getting in there I would think, as you all know the ST has some great protection. Thanks for your comments and concerns.

Nice farkle, Dave. Is that PDA cradle adjustable enough to hold an iPod? I've been working on mounting one on my ST1100, between the bars like that, but also thought about the gps for my Ipaq pda as well. I'd probably use the ipod more often on short rides, so it would be nice if I could use some kind of mounting system for either one.

I think it would work. You could E mail them to be sure.
