I am going to get a tail bag for my ST, had a hard bag on the 1100 but I am not going to go that route this time. I will only use it on an extended ride. Does anybody have any suggestions. I am thinking that at least 30 litre to 50 litre would work out right as far as size goes, any suggestions?

The Ventura Bike Pack system is nice, reasonably priced, and works well. You can get them at http://www.sporttouringusa.com/www/V_bikepack.htm
Also, if you just want a drybag to strap on the back, I'd recommend the Ortlieb bags, available from Aerostich. They're nice because they open along the top, giving full access to the inside without emptying them like end-opening drybags require.
www.aerostich.com Go to "Tank Bags and Saddle Bags" Page 4 of 6, they're called Dry Bag Duffel Bags.
I've used both over the years and was quite pleased with both. The Ventura system has the advantage of a lot of flexibility with multiple sizes, for short trips take the small bag, medium trips the large bag, and long trips take both. Very nice system.
I use the dry bag duffel bags now just because I inherited a Givi trunk with my "new" 98 when I bought it, and so I sold the Ventura system.
I'm totally lost as far as size. I carry a Chase Harper bag in the saddlebag. It folds into itself. It opens up to around travel trunk size. I find it handy at times when I don't have the top box on.

Or, if you're a cheap guy like me, and your equipment doesn't have to be exclusively motorcycle gear, you might be interested in soft sided tackle bags.

If you're only going to use it on trips, consider a Givi hard case. I saw a thread on ST1300.US a while back from an STer who wanted $200 for his whole Givi kit (box w/ brake light and bracket), and you can get them new on the 'net for not much over $300. More secure, more weather proof than a tail bag, way cheaper than a Hondaline box. Just an idea.

I use a wunderlich tailbag attached to my rear seat.

I have a Nelson-Rigg that I like, water proof and tested on a week long ride in the rains of South Dakota. Like you I only wanted it for trips. I have no regrets about buying the Nelso-Rigg setup.

I have a Tour Master tail bag but there is no solid way to attach it. Short of drilling some holes or bungie buddies, I have yet to figure out a positive hook. I have used quite a few different TM products over the years and have found them to be simple, designed with riders in mind, reasonably priced and reasonably long lasting.
