Dan,
US 1 from just north of Rockport, CA to Leggett CA is AWESOME. If we had had more time we would have turned around and run it again!!!!!! South of Leggett 2-3 miles on the 101 is the Chandelier Drive Thru Tree. The Tour Thru Tree is near Klamath on the 101.
Have a great ride!!!

Thanks for the tip, JD. I'll be sure to hit it. :)
I am open to any and all route tips.
My (loose) plan is to stick to the coast north, dip into Canada for a day or so and then ride back through Idaho and Nevada....
I'll start planning on my Garmin sometime over the next week or so.

Dan,
Take a look at the 'Roads to WeSTOC' site and you'll see all kinds of road recommendations for Washington. At the bottom of the page are pdf's of the WeSTOC 12 ride maps. These are the same rides from the official WeSTOC site. If you go to the official site you can download the Mapsource files for these routes and adapt them to fit. :)

I know you have Washinton covered. :)
Was hoping to piece together a more over all route outside of WeSTOC. I'll be taking 8 days to travel and will probably stick for WeSTOC for about 2 of those 8. :)
Thanks again for organizing this! I am really looking forward to it and will register soon.

Thanks for the info guys.
Adam: Yeah, I would like a "back up" of that.... :)
Also: Can anyone make a rec. for a good camp ground around WeSTOC / Redmond?
Should I reserve?
Thanks,
<D>
Vasa park is recommended on the WeSToc site and I'm planning to camp there unless there is a closer and cheaper site. I'd like to share a tent site with someone - the campground allows 2 people on a tent site - I assume they will allow 2 tents. Half of $22 for a tent site is seems good to me.

I don't think you're going to find anything closer or cheaper. Vasa Park is an "in city", private resort type camp ground on Lake Sammamish. The entire area around it is water front homes starting at about a million bucks. I don't even think there are any other camping locations until you get into the hills.
Be sure and make a reservation!
Thurs thru Sat. I'll pay you half if you reserve a tent site for any of these nights - or I'll reserve - let me know. If I don't find someone to share a site then I'll go stay at a friends house in Mill Creek but I'd rather stay a little closer. Every rally is a CheapSToc for me :-/
I'm hoping to slab it south on the 5th or 6th and link up with Clmixon, Sherob, AZST, and Mark - if I can find them in SoCal. Their schedule sounds like it is flexible. See "preparing for Westoc 2007" thread. I like riding with a group. Otherwise it's only a 200 mile ride to WeSToc for me.

So I am open to route suggestions.
I have 8 days to travel. I want to at least hit WeSTOC for at least Friday or Saturday and drop into Canada for a day or so.
I have free places to stay in:
Eugene, Or
Portland, Or
If you have a camp site for WeSTOC and wouldn't mind splitting it with me, I'll be happy to pay my portion of 4/5 nights, even though I might not be there the entire time. Just PM me how much and the location. I can paypal or give you cash when I get there. Just keep a spot for a 7X9 tent open...and my ST of course.
I'll leave San Diego, Ca on August 4th and want to ride the coast up to Washington.
I'd like to ride back through Idaho and either hit some more of NorCal or NorNevada.
I have a Zumo 550, so if you have a route already planned that I can just upload it could save me some time hacking it out.... (of course I will be uploading the files from the WeSTOC site for the time that I am there....)
See you all there soon!

I posted this a couple of weeks ago in a different thread. I love this ride and it gives you coast, mountains, Crater Lake, and a Lava field. It is a great ride. Let me know if you have any questions.
Re: Preparing for WESTOC 2007
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hey guys I've been reading your plan and would like to offer a suggestion if you are coming up the California coast into Oregon. Take hwy 199 out of Crescent City into Grants Pass, OR. (very twisty fun road) Loop back south towards Ashland on HWY 99 South. From Ashland take Dead Indian Memorial Raod to HWY 140. Loop behind Klamath lake to Crater Lake ( a must see while in Oregon). From there come out the North End of the park and head north on HWY 97 (straight and boring but not far to Bend) In Bend go west on HWY 20 to Sisters. At Sisters take HWY 242 ( one of the coolest roads in Oregon and only open about three months a year) Up on top stop and enjoy the view of the Mountain range as well as the lava field you are sitting on. Once off HWY 242. Head West back to the Ocean through Florence, OR and enjoy the very scenic Norther Oregon Coast....That is my suggestion as a local with some experiece riding this great STate. Email me with questions.
Dan,
I shoud have made a reservation at Vasa campground a month ago. I just called and left a message. I'll let you know if I get a tent site. I am also wanting to link up with other riders the week before - looks like a lot of riders coming up the coast that week - so many opportunities. I've asked Mark, Clmixon, Sherob, AZST if I can join them but I'd make the group kinda big and I'n not sure how far south I want to go if this heat hangs on. Sounds liek you may spend several days further north. I'm also hoping to camp - the price fits my budget better and sharing a motel room with old friends is ok but new ones ???? seems risky - I hope to make some new friends at WeSToc - not wreck it the day I meet them.
Clang, appreciate your suggestions. I also have you on my lsit to try and link up for one of those rides sometime - maybe the week before WeSToc or anytime.

I'm gonna hook up with my nephew-in-law at some point (prolly in Northern CA.) He has only a week but wants to join up to WeSTOC. He (and my brother) are in Portland so we'll prolly swing thru there and spend the night then on to Redmond.
I'm copying Clang's route as I like that part of the country and it's good to have local input for the "good stuff."

I don't know what that route was George, but you might want to ride up the east side of St. Helens and by Rainier after leaving Portland. That will give you the oportunity to do routes north of Seattle (like HWY 20), and the Peninsula on the riding days. Two days riding around here really isn't enough time to hit all the good stuff unless you really like big dog rides. There's good stuff to see in every direction! :)

Das, Sounds good. Let me know if you get a site.
I posted over at StonyG's thread too (I know him from CreSTOC) to see hi might have room for a tent also....
I am sure we'll find somewhere to park our tents.
I plan on working the routes into my mapping program / gps this weekend sometime. Once it's firmed up, I'll start seeing if there is a chance to hook up.
I like to ride my own pace, so much like your "new friends motel" comment, I think the same logic can be applied to riding groups too.
Anyway....I am sure we will all hook up at WeSTOC.
Should be a great time!

Dan,
Fred and I are planning on leaving on the 3rd and moseying up on the PCH. If you hurry, you can catch up to us. Fred says that since he's riding with a slower red bike, he'll have to take it easy (LOL).
Anyway, this is the basic plan, pretty silly really, just follow the coast up. Ignore the times and days. We're winging it.

Ok, here's the deal with SF, my friend who lives in Shoreline, WA is going to be visiting friends and family in the SF area the week before I'm headed through (notice my map plots a route to Shoreline not Redmond). He told me that he would be ready to leave on the 4th and that we could ride back together. Since I have the 3rd off anyway, I figured perfect planning! I'd meet him on the 4th and away we'd go. Some of you may have trouble believing this, but that is as far as my planning went. BTW, friend's handle on this board is RonH.R12GSA, but as far as I know, he's never posted.
Now, to the best of my knowledge, there is no compelling reason for me to leave on the 3rd. I was leaving on the 3rd because that's my first day off. Besides a whole day off before leaving would allow me way too much time to anticipate the trip; I'd probably pack, unpack and repack 20 times in a whole day.
Add a complication, Dan you can appreciate this. More or less right after we made these plans his work put in jeopardy the 1st week of his planned 2 week vacation, which put our rendezvous in question. He won't know until July 27th if he can make it to SF or not for the 1st week of his vacation or not, he says the 2nd week, the week I will be there for WeSTOC is not in question. So now I'm hanging here not really knowing if I have anyone to meet on the 4th or not. I doubt that he would have problems hanging another day waiting for me to arrive if I asked. So far, I just haven't asked.
As to route on the way back, sights to see, detours along the way and anything else you all can dream of, I'm open to those ideas. The idea is to explore, enjoy the sights, visit what can be visited, ride the roads that can be ridden with emphasis on unridden roads. That being said, nights on the road are expensive compared to staying with my friend in Shoreline, I was not planning on taking the entire time between the 3rd and the 9th on the road up. After all, the roads and rides around Shoreline are new and unexplored too. I understand that for some of you, that these are all nights on the road until you return home and more or less equally expensive. My situation is just a bit different. The faster I get to Shoreline the less this trip will cost me. That being said, cost is not the deciding factor (but it will always be a factor).
I place a high priority in trying to meet up and ride with you guys; you guys are my friends and I have such a good time when we get together. As the number of people from the southern contingent try to get together it becomes more and more complicated and a bit overwhelming for me.
Anyway, the purpose of this discourse was to allow everyone planning here the chance to understand what is driving my decision making.

Understood. :)
Believe it or not, whether I do the trip solo or ride with a group at points, my plan is to try not to have much of a schedule.
I live by schedules (even though my nature is to not want to schedule anything - I have learn how to do it...) when I work, and I work a lot...so to break away from worrying about scheduling is going to allow me to relax.
I also have a similar situation in Eugene and Portland. I have free places to stay as long as I need them.
I *DO* want to get into Canada for at least 1 day, if nothing more than to say I did it. And I also want to see Crater Lake, but this is a Day ride for me and I have a place to stay in Eugene at the end of it if I want. :)
So I guess what I am saying is: I can't wait to see you guys at WeSTOC, for sure....and if we hook up at any point on the way, that's cool, but not a requirement. :)
The one and only requirement for me is: Everyone has fun. :)
See you all soon!
