Sorry to all the die hard ST1300 owners, I recently went back to a goldwing, had to make the better half happy. Wish I could afford both, as I really enjoyed the quickness and power acceleration of the st. Just returned from a 10 day ride with wife, 10 states, 3200 miles....I'm sure I waived at more than a few of you last week.............somewhere between Wisconsin and Florida, via the smoky mtns

Wings are cool. I plan on getting one when I move into the assisted living development here in town.

Just kidding.

Everyone knows I can't afford assisted living.

No seriously though, my real plan is to get a Wing after I pay off the ST, and have both.

I love the new wings (I've had 2). Of all the bikes I've owned (28) its the only one my wife was happy riding. She has pretty much stopped riding any so I went back to the ST. That said I do miss alot of things about the wing..its a very good bike.

You're still 'ST' at heart.

I saw a Goldwing in a photo with out the rear topbox and I thought it looked extremely cool... Very nice indeed.

Nothing to be sorry for, at least you are still riding. Besides, who knows what may come in the future. You might end up with both later.

My wife is lobbying for a wing too. I don't know that I can hold her off that long since I don't have the "We only have one bike and it would make a lousey commuter" argument.

More than one of us have enjoyed both an ST and a GL. Certainly two up for any extended riding, there is no substitute for a GL. Take care of the passenger, and everyone will be happy.

I am fortunate to have reached the point where I can have the best of both worlds.

I ride the ST alone 95% of the time. Today I did about 120 miles with my 13 year old daughter (adult sized female) on the back. The ST amazes me @ its ability to morph from bike that feels agile and sporty into a serious touring machine - and back again. Two up for 1000+ mile trips? That might be better on a GL1800. I can't blame you.

Good luck with that new motorcycle. Don't be a stranger. And yes, nice color.

When I came home with the ST the Better Half was bent out of shape because it wasn't a Wing. She just wanted that lounge chair in the back. Oh well, guess I'll just have to continue riding the ST

The important thing is to be happy with what you ride. I like the old saying that it's not what you ride, it's that you ride. :-)

To all of you who have not ridden a new wing...you need to. No its not as nimble as the ST but you will be suprised by just how well it handles. I've had more than a few FJR's trying to stay with me when I had mine. It really is a mind trip to see something that big that go's and handle's that well...and all the bells and whistles will spoil you.....just ask Mellow!!

Two things turn me off about a Wing: the size/heft and the enormous dashboard with the non-lowering windscreen. I really do prefer having the wind in my face much of the time - and the HINT of sportiness and tossability that the ST provides.

If the goal is taking care of the passenger, then the GL is correct choice.

The GL is big, no doubt. It's such a huge surprise when you ride it, though. All the weight and bulk goes away after 10mph and it becomes pretty nimble. The windshield does adjust, but manually...4" total, I believe.

I have been told by some long time riders that the ST1100 and Goldwing 1800 handle mountains roads about the same, for skilled riders. The ST1300 will beat both.

My question: Seems the ST1300 averages around 44 MPG on premium fuel ($0.20 per gallon more than regular.) The GoldWing gets around 40 MPG on regular. At fill up the cost is about the same, right? Probably, not a real concern, since it would be less than $100 more for fuel on the ST1300.

My 1991 is going on 17 years old and 85K. It has the 40A alternator, AV cruise, GPS, Radar Detector, AmpliRider and MP3. I ride solo, 15-20K miles per year. I am thinking about going to a new ABS GoldWing due to the built in accessories, not hang-ons. The only thing really holding me back is the Nav package required to get ABS. Reports indicate that the Nav is really crippled, sort of spoiled with the Garmin 2720 features. Hell, I might as well get the $1500 Air Bag package too.

Comments, please.

You can't buy a 1800 ABS without the GPS? I'm also gonna say the reported mpg you put out the GL might be optimistic? Most I talk to report mid 30s, and 2 up fully loaded going down to low 30s. But I'll say this, if a joker makes mpg the deciding factor on what bike to buy, then he needs to call a few of us on this board, so we can help him. The guys around here buy a bike because it speaks to us and we LIKE it, and if it returned 10 mpg, we don't much care.

My mileage on a somewhat aggressive day is typically at 38. If I'm just taking it
easy I can get 44 but that's usually just 5mph over the posted limit and very
little hard acceleration.

OMG! It happened....

I was on the way back from a family function with the wife and we stopped the car turned around and looked at a ( dare I say it? ):22yikes: GoldWing ! ! !
She says I can ride the ST and "we" can ride the Wing.
Guys, I think I just got the go-a-head to buy a third bike!!! :hat1:

It's an '01 with just 7800 miles on it & looks clean. for $10500 I'm thinkin' it looks like a purty good buy. calling the owner in the AM.....

2dogs, that is a sweet deal. Make sure he had the frame inspected. Even though I have never heard of an '01 that had a problem with cracks, it is a free inspection.

Mellow
08-27-2007, 06:47 AM
Yeah, I think the welding process was 'tweaked' after the '01 models and then 'un-tweaked' in late '04 if I remember correctly.

My '01 didn't have any issues other than the sticking speedo meter, which was common. Now, when they replaced it, the mileage started over so 13k of the bike's mileage disappeared. I told that to the future owner when we were trading bikes. But, not everyone may provide that info. Get the vin if you can and see what honda knows about it.

Thanks Mac & Joe....
I'll see if he can provide the VIN #
So I could take it to any Honda dealer for the frame inspectioin?
He says this is a Canadian bike The speedo is in kilometers (aprox. 11000 k)
Any known issues with "Canadian" Wings of this vintage?

Mellow
08-27-2007, 10:17 AM
I have no idea about canadian wings or inspections and such... try www.ridersrally.com as they might give you some good info.

I'm would think the dealers are well-versed in the frame issue by now. Since this was a safety recall/inspection I'm assuming a bike being out of warranty would not be an issue.

Don't think it was a matter of kilos or miles on the speedo. The milar face would expand if the sun was on it and then catch the speedometer hand in whatever position it was in. You could be stopped and the speedometer was reading 65 MPH. I learned to just shade mine with my shadow and keep it honest. Never did get it replaced and hence the 103,000 miles on the odo was true when I traded it on the '06.

Why don't they have a "NO WING CHECK OUT LANE" at the STealers, like they have "no candy check out lanes" at the grocery store???? Then the wives wouldn't see them and we could keep riding our ST's?????

To answer some of the earlier messages in this thread, an ST1300 will get significantly better fuel economy than a GL1800. While I get around 40 MPG with the GL, I get in the high 40's with the ST1300. Of course, I have never bought a bike yet for fuel economy, and if I did, there are better options than either of these for mileage.

The real advantage to me of the GL1800 is having a corider. When I think of the people I know with Wings, probably 95% routinely/always have a co-rider. With the ST, it is just about the opposite (5%).

If you want/need/desire to accomodate a corider, then I would highly recommend a GL1800. If you are always riding one up, then the ST, a VFR, and many other bikes are good options.
