I noticed the manuel of the ST1300 recomends changing the oil every 8,000 miles. Is this what most of you guys do? What about synthetic? Would the interval be even longer?

I do oil and filter rarely longer than 3000 mi intervals and often sooner given certain circumstances. But that's me. I'm always amazed at the metallic content in the oil at that point so that is why i do it so often. I personally believe tho that it tends to make a dif as to how well an engine performs at 200000 miles, vs maybe some that won't even go anywhere near that far in any running condition.
I don't use syn in crankcase because of cost and ease of a change but do believe it is better once you've got 10000 miles on your engine on dino oil. I do use it in gear boxes [on bike too] and dif and transfer cases of my other vehicles tho. [the smaller quantities help justify the extra cost and increased mpg due to better and faster viscosity flow rates when the temp really drops].

... I also see a bit of metal flaking if you really look ... you could go longer with synthetic, but there is also a time factor. If you're on an extended long trip and have synth oil in there, you could leave it for 8 or 10k but if you're an occasional rider, then every 3 or 4 months would be my rule. At the very least do one oil & filter change in the spring and another in the fall.
I do mine every 5000 miles ('cept for long trips) with M1 red. Changed to syn at 500 miles/day 2.
63,500 miles on my '03.

I changed to Syn at 4K. I change my oil every 4K including the rear drive.

Why not just stick to the manufacturer recommendations 8k or once a year.

Honda 8000 miles or 12000 KM just seems a little long in my opinion. I am using dino oil and change around 5000 to 6000 KM

The best preventative maintenance you can do for your engine is religiously changing the oil at 3000--5000 mile intervals. Keeps your engine happy.

Every 4,000. Used to do it every three but find a number divisible by 4 is easier. Why not do it every 8? Because I want to keep the bike for 15 years and I want it to run well on that fifteenth year. :)
8K miles per year?
Shame on you Paul 8)
If I did it every 8k that would STill be 4 changes per year. :-)
Time to ride....

I do the 5000 mile cycle for the engine oil and 10000 for the gear oil, which is working out to be about every other month. Mobile 1 oil and the Wal-Mart filter (supose to be the Mobile 1 clone). The majority of my miles are freeway miles/speeds, commuting to and from work. The oil from the next change and I'm sending a sample in for testing, more curious the anything else.
I my bike seems to run a great deal better after the oil changes and a bath, how about you guys/gals?

The average miles per annum here is circa 4k. I do about 6k. From the top of the island to the bottom is no more than 450 miles as the crow flies. We have about 50 miles of motorway (freeway) in total in N Ilreand and about 70 or 80 miles in the Republic.
My point would be that to get in the miles that you are able to get up to I would have to live on the bike during the week and get someone else to ride it at the weekend for me :D .You will understand that after a week on the local roads here I would have experienced a weak end ;) (get it!) and would need to sit in a bucket of ice

... I bet you can't wait for the big wide open of N.A. eh ? .... :) You will indeed be amazed at the wide open spaces we have
In the meantime, maybe a sheepskin will help the ol' rear end :)

After all those repair bills on my RTs, I finally learned my lesson and did my first 'renching. What a sense of accomplishment!
Feels good and wallet feels just a bit better.
Snow melted enough for me to change the oil and filter and final drive oil. Piece of cake. Why wasn't I doing this all along? And it is a little harder to do on the new bike than the old bike. Dealer did the 600 mile break in service, I changed the oil at 3200 miles on the odometer. Will try to do it every 3000.
I've joined the DIY club. Wahooo!

Now I need to get a pit bull stand, a bead breaker, a computer diagnostic device thingy, a little metric set of...., and a bunch of .......,

I over do it but have never had any engine problems in anything I have owned the last 30 years. I change oil and filter every 2500 - 3000 miles on every thing I drive. I change the gear oil every time I change the oil on the ST. Changing the gear oil is easy, cheap and fast to do. Over doing it just seems like cheap insurance.

I use Honda HP4 (semi synthetic) and plan to change every 5,000 miles. The synthetic costs double compared to the Honda GN4 regular stuff.

Every 3500 miles and I do the rear drive oil at the same time. It's easy to do and makes you and the ST feel better. Paul if you follow through on your plans to visit the US, you'll have to install an icepack on your butt for the duration. Connecticut is a tiny state and we have well over a thousand miles of 2 and 4 lane roads. Hope to see you when and if.- john :03biker:

When I bought my ST I started reading all I could on this web site and others for tips and info. One thing recommended was to not wait for the recommended interval (24,000 miles per the Honda service manual!!) to change the final drive oil. The advice was to have it done at the 600 mile break in maintenance and then several more times at short intervals until it looks clean. I had mine done at the 600 interval and did it again myself yesterday at 2600. I wish I had done it sooner! It was still incredibly dirty. I can't imagine what it would have been like if I waited until 24,000! I plan on doing it again every 400 miles or so until it starts to look better. Any others out there have this same issue? I am being anal about this or is this something other new owners should be aware of?

Most do it at every oil change IMHO... that's what I'll be doing at least :D
Same here, I change final drive oil at every motor oil change(5000km).

Sounds like you had a great time! :D Don't worry about Lllano... I won't be able to go... I will be doing Hico! ;) Free lemon too... LOL!!!
Back to your regularly scheduled oil change interval... :D

Try to hit about 5K. Sometime go to 6K. Figure the semi-synthetic holds on a little better.

Doesn't the Canadian manual state to do an oil change every 6400km after the initial 1000km service?

Nope. They show a 6.4k interval in the chart but only call for the oil/filter to be changed every second interval.... 12.8k. It's about what I get out of a rear tire so I change oil with the tire. M1 red cap synthetic, OEM filter.

I checked it after I posted, but didn't come back to repost.
I will be replacing the engine and final drive oil at every 6.4k interval.

Change mine every 4000 and I use Mobil 1 Gold Cap Synthetic. I change more frequently than most though.

Same here. Just finished the 4000 mile change. (first one on my own and am quite pleased with myself) Used the Rotella T Dino this round, but plan to change again at 6k to the Synth then will be back to 4000 miles.
* AutoZone has the Rotella T Dino for $5.88/Gal and the Synth for $8/ gal. $4 cheaper than WalMart.

Mobile Gold Cap every 4000, although sometimes I go over a few hundred miles. I figure if I shoot for half the recommended service, and I forget, or get busy, or am on a long trip I am good to go for a while yet. I havn't chnaged the rear yet, wasn't sure what to use in it when I changed it last week, but the bike only has 8,000 on it so I'll get around to changing the rear soon enough.
