Good news from Hannagan's Meadow:
Prices for rooms and cabins vary between $80 and $160, some cabins sleep up to 8
There WILL be lunch at
Hannagan Meadow STore
on
8-9-08
(Attend this event - click here) (http://www.st-owners.com/forums/calendar.php?do=getinfo&e=142&day=2008-8-8&c=1)
Explanation for the liST and ST-Owners
Since 8-8-08 is on Friday, the RTE will be Saturday, 8-9-08
Hot lunch (basic burgers and dogs with sides) will be at the Hannagan Meadow _STore this year. So, we're on for lunch.
Make yur best choice for accommodations at Springerville/Eagar, Alpine, Hannagan Meadow, or Clifton, and join me for lunch between 11:30 and 2 on Saturday.
I plan to arrive in the area around noon on Friday and stay thru noon on Sunday. I'll probably go riding, too, so catch me when ya can except lunch on Saturday.
Accommodations are available at the Lodge (9 rooms?) and some of the cabins will sleep up to 8. I think I'm gonna stay at the Lodge this year.
I need to get a head count for lunch so we can warn'em ahead of time. If this grows like Moonshine did, there will be about 120 of us on 8/9/08.
Motels
There are many choices, but there is a Rode Inn in Clifton or Springerville or Reserve, NM:
http://www.rodeinn.com/
The Rode Inn in Springerville has a great continental breakfast but is a little pricey at ~$80/night.
The Rode INN is Clifton is cheaper but has no breakfast.
I've not stayed in either Alpine or Hannagan Meadow so can't comment. Ya buys yur ticket and ya takes yur chances.
Shirts
Due to lack of interest and other condsideratins, there will be no shirt produced this year. The couple folks who did respond will receive a timely refund.
(P.S. I will continue to edit this thread as the event approaches. Less than 2 months to go.)
(P.P.S If ya buy the shirt but don't ride til Saturday or Sunday, who's gonna know 10 years from now? ;) )

While at the lodge this year I didn't walk around like I should have and checked the place out. Wonder how much or how many it would take to get them to fire up that BBQ grille', have they said? Can't remember if anyone ask about that before. I know one thing, I'm certainly gonna find a longer way to get there this next time, I was there so early I had to run around town on the ST to keep my spirits up ;).

Well, we don't have a place to link to for a head count, so I'll just say I'm in. Since the meal isn't going to be until Saturday, I'll have to figure out my route. I mean, close as I get until the wheels are rolling:) Sure you don't want to have a dry run on 8-8-07? We'd have time:)
I'd order shirts now, George, but I might have to change X numbers and screw up the whole thing:)

You won't get heat stroke on the 666. Not in August, not in July. What happens to you getting there might be the problem. I'd guess the forever high temp for Hannigan Meadows is under 100º
'Course it is 9000' elevation:)
And we'll regret that 9000' elevation on 12-12-12 too!

Elliot, my understanding is that, historically, the two words were used interchangeably. Only recently has "farther" come to mean a reference to physical distance and "further" has come to mean metaphysical distance, as in "I asked that there be no further discussion of Algore's hotairbag potential."

EJ, the meeting with the Mormon girls was not planned, purely accidental. Kind'a fun tho. Howard got a little intense but mostly friendly. :D
The ol' 666 designation was changed, in part, because of the devil reference. Happened in Arizona first, then, several years later, in New Mexico. There is a section in Utah, tho, that is still 666.
Statistics show that changing the number did nothing for the accident rate.
I've read elsewhere that the original biblical reference used the number 616 (oldest available version of the Apocalypse.)

Hey, Benny, come on!
As you know, that 666 (191, now) is one of the best MC roads on the planet. Easily the best over 50 miles. Watch here, George has gotten a pretty clever shirt made up the last two times...is really a pretty cool deal. Literally. Temp was 105º when I left Yuma at 3:30am. It was in the 70º range for lunch at Hannigan Meadows:)

BigTom...Thanks for the invite:D Work and family will problably keep me from doing this event.A number of other factors also come into play.I've traveled in other parts of the country but have never taken a true cross country trek.through more than 3 states. Also if I;m in AZ I will want alot more time to visit places I have not seen in over 20 yrs...that would mean alot more time than i have considering work and family...however I will do some further research into the possibilities...after all only a few things are certain in life...the rest is up in the air...so to say..;)

Same deal as last year, only the lunch will be at the store instead'a the lodge. A few changes there, I guess.
The store is open for lunch (mainly burgers) every day now. Meals at the lodge only for guests.
I was there last week on Tuesday, snow in the shadows from the 18" they received the previous Friday night. Shouldn't be any when we get there. I'm gonna get a room at the Lodge for Friday and Saturday night. Other lodging in the area, Springerville on the north, Clifton on the south. Food at all locations including Alpine, about 20 miles north of Hannagan Meadow.
Officially it's 666 0n 8-8-08, but that's Friday. Let's plan to meet at the Meadow on Saturday, 11:30 to 1:30. Visit, kick tires, eat a burger. The coming and going is the important part of this RTE. Pick your own route (only 2 choices, US-191 from north or south. the ride from Morenci to Hannagan Meadow is on the best anywhere in the US.)
No decision on shirts yet.

I traveled 191 south from the Medows last year to the road block, then I traveled 191 east for about 20 feet, then I took 191 north back to Alpine and out.

I mean I don't keep maintenance records. I change tires when they are slick, change oil when it isn't, don't keep parts receipts, and generally do a shoddy job of tracking things. I don't plan to ever sell either ST so don't need to keep records for the next owner. When I _did_ keep reccords, I never looked at'em.
BigTom

Ahhh. My friend George has described my maintainence record keeping nearly to a tee. I sometimes keep records of purchases, more often not. I'm sure just exactly how many miles on my oil change, that's as good as it gets.:)
Thanks George. Now I feel better knowing there will be shirts. I too put my complete trust in you for the design. I'll PM you for your address again and get a check off to you if you can confirm the price for long sleeve.

LOL, that's sort of a trick question isn't it Mark. It depends on how fast you drive.
According to Google maps, if you drive the speed limit, the trip is 5 hours.
Now the race is on!

I hadn't checked here for a while so I missed your question but it looks like you got an answer, more or less. I also had emailed you directly to see how you were getting settled in Tucson.
I think it will really depend which route you take, up 191 or up through New Mexico which is quicker but brings you out in Alpine. I'm going up early, staying in Pinetop and riding over the day of the event. Let me know if you can get up early and we can talk about a place to stay there.
I will not be able to take 2 days off... not in *this* accelerated program!
If I my testing schedule allows me time I'll talk Chris into making a day trip of it...

George,
I'd love to attend but all that desert between Los Angeles and Hannigan Meadows is very intimidating. I'll see if I can get my courage up. A quick 9 hours or so Friday night, riding 191 on Saturday and another 9 hours on Sunday would do the trick.

Folks, just heard that there's fires in S.E. Arizona (again), parts of 191 are closed (again).

Okay, the Hot Air (http://165.221.39.44/incident/1369/) fire, Apache Sitgraves National Forest, 30 miles north of Clifton (~50 miles south of Hannagan Meadow.)
Lets all cross our fingers that the road will be opened for the August event.

Mac, I gotta check with Hannagan Meadow to see if they allow tent camping. Nothing on their site. Also, I'm sure there's sumpin in Alpine but no details. I'll find out.
Or, do what I do: when in National Forest, pitch a tent.

Copied my post from the List.
After WeSTOC, my buddy Gren on his 1985 Goldwing and I decided to try the 666 (191) from Alpine, AZ to Clifton. We stayed in Alpine for the night. In Alpine there was a portable sign stating 191 was closed due to forrest fires, we decided to run the road until it was closed, yep, forrest rangers had a barricade a couple miles South of Hannagan Meadow. We turned around, went back to Alpine and on 180 to Mule Creek and to Clifton to run 191 North. The ride from Clifton thru the copper mines at Morenci revealed some nice hairpins. From Clifton, we were able to go North about 50 miles until the Forrest Rangers had the road blocked. I seemed to put some wear on the outside tread edges I never saw before.
If you ever get near 666 (191), you owe it to your self to run all or even just both ends.

Final update. I talked to Hannagan Meadow folks this morning, Bill now knows there will be 15-20 of us for lunch next Saturday (I told'em between noon and 1, just to narrow the window a little. I still plan to be there ~11:30.)
Burgers 'N Dogs are the usual fare, prepped on the outdoor grill.
At the general store instead'a the lodge this year, so a little more rustic.
See youse guys there in _one_ week. :D

Thank ya George! Little change in my plans too! Sharon can't make the run, she's one of the honcho's for the county fair here and takes her out of the ride..drat!:( But I have a x-coworker who has a beemer who wants to see that part of the country he has not been in. I kinda bragged on the meet in Taos so one thing led to another in conversation and he wants to meet the nice folk from the ST crowd, soooo I invited him. Hope to see ya all there!
Ride safe! Ed :D

George,
"Prepped on the outdoor grill," that makes all the difference! Hope there is room for one more... Nothing but this dang furnace heat in the Valley, look forward to riding north, cooling off, and seeing everyone.
:04biker:
I'm riding up to Pinetop early this friday morning if anyone else is attending from the Tucson area and would like to ride up together.
Wish I could Tony... but 2nd session finals are next week.
Then I get a whole 7 days off! (well there is one mandatory meeting in the middle of my *off* week... :))
Ride safe!

If you are getting 7 days off (with the one exception in the middle) we should try to put a ride together. Don't forget, it's an accelerated program.

Just for everyone's info, Dana, Carole, and I arrived at the El Jo Motel in Springerville about 1530 CA time and the temperature was a very nice 70 degrees F. The motel is a very well taken care of establishment and Carole and I ended up with a mini suite. Hope to see a few STers on 191 tomorrow. Dana and I ahd a spirited ride up the Salt River Canyon on the way here. I was leading for a while, but I had to wave Dana on ahead when I got yelled at in my head set. Dang Gold Wing pegs are tooooo low.

Like Mac said, was a nice ride in. Stopped in Yuma for breakfast as planned, met Bob (AzDesertRider), Tom (BigTom), and Tom's friend Ray. Was great seeing the guys, I know they wish they were with us riding today. The desert temps were typically 102, but they did reach 104 for a bit. Rained on us a couple of times, never anything major. We really dodged the bullet this time. Looking forward to seeing some STeeds on 191 tomorrow for this ride's name sake 666 on 8/8/08!
Well, I was sorta close to you guys while I was on my way to CO. I left SoCal on Thursday morning, rode up through Prescott & spent the night in Payson. Now I see why you AZ guys have the RTEs in Pine. Great roads up there & Pine is a cute little town. Left Payson today, through Show Low & bypassed Springerville to catch 191 at St Johns headed north. I saw a couple of black ST1100s headed south out of Cortez CO as I was going north. Maybe they were headed for 666STOC. I'm in Cortez tonight & headed for Lake City CO tomorrow for the weekend. After that, I'll head up towards Denver & ride around CO for a couple of days, then maybe hit 191 on the way back to Tucson. I may need new tires (tars) before heading back to SoCal. Finally getting to do some miles - these aren't that old.....
I hope the rain holds off for you guys. So far I've been lucky & missed it or just hit a bit, but it looks like Lake City & Denver are in for it this weekend.

Getting ready to head out in the next few minutes. Cya all for lunch:D
Well I wanted to be there but the tire gods were not smiling on me today. My Roadsmart Front tire failed me today at about the 7,000 mile mark.
I made it about 135 miles from home when I discovered it. Turned around and rode home. When I got off the freeway I noticed I actually had a front flat. Can't believe how strong the sidewalls are on this tire only way I noticed it was when I was trying to turn. Actually rode it home from there about 4 miles on the flat.
Hope you all had a good day.. Sorry I missed it :(:(:(

Carole and I enjoyed meeting ya'll at Hanagan Meadows. Dana pressed on to El Cajon, but we stopped for the night in Casa Grande. We intend to get an early start for Ocean Beach and beat the heat. Got caught in a toad strangler leaving Clifton, but it only lasted a few miles. Stopped in Safford and removed rain duds. Had some threatening weather as we headed west but nothing got us. Enjoyed an incredible sunset prior to pulling off at Casa Grande. The highest temp we saw was just prior to the mine at 95. The storms and cloud cover kept it quite nice for Aug in AZ.

OK, it is gonna take Carole quite a while to get her pictures ready to post. She took somewhere around 800 and some of them are awesome. I must say I am glad I opted to go south on 191 instead of going back to Salt River Canyon. WOW, what a road just north of Morenci!!!! Holy Hanna!!!! The switchbacks switched back on themselves in a couple of places going down that last hill!!!
George and Bob the pictures I took of you guys were so out of focus and far away, you couldn't see what kind of bikes you were on and who you were so I won't be posting them.

Great shots, Carole. I haven't even looked at mine.
Found an interesting new (to me) road yesterday, though. AZ 288 runs _east_ of Roosevelt Reservoir, through the small farming community of Young, AZ up to AZ 260 33 miles east of Payson. 70 miles, about 1/2 paved, 1/2 dirt. Had to get my dirt fill for the weekend.
Pics to follow.
Total was about 20 ST folks (even on Wings and wee-stroms) plus a few Beemers and some Harleys. Wild bill did a good job with burgers and dogs, I didn't get any beans, tho.
Pretty wet weekend, I got rained on Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. So much for desert living. :D
Yogi and Mark, sorry youse guys had to miss out.
Next year, 6-6-09, late enuff to miss the snow, early enuff to miss the heat (lower down) and the rain.
Good to see all youse guys. TentSTOC, WiSTOC, Nat/TexSTOC, SeaSTOC all coming up for me.

I truly appreciate the compliments on the pics...I do enjoy taking pictures!
George...sorry you got wet every day...we hit REAL rain for...at most...a half an hour on Saturday's return segment of the trip. But we had ALL rain gear on, so barely felt it....visibility was most affected. Looking forward to seeing you pics posted.
Hey Ed...The horny toad and hummingbirds got very close...I enjoyed them too! Glad I was able to help you with a battery.
EJ....I will post more pics...tomorrow afternoon or evening.
Supersabre...tell Chris it's not bad...I signal Mac when I want to stand, and let him know when I'm sitting back down...he balances the bike for my movement. I always move slowly...it works beautifully. I don't think I could take pictures while riding...like Dana does. I've tried...not very successful. I have friends who have mounted their cameras, and one with a helmet camera....there are lots of options.
Mark and Yogi...sorry you didn't make it! MArk..Mac and I were tempted to "drop" in on you on our way home.
Big Tom....You make me blush! But, I am thrilled with the STowners welcome....maybe some of you will want to try the Valk trike at SeaSTOC.
Most of the members of my club have tried it (or one of the other trikes..we
have several goldwing trikes too). I asked them to try mine (I was the first triker in the club)so they would understand the differences. I remember one
of the guys (a sportsbiker) took it out for a spin on Mt. Laguna, and genuflected at my feet when he returned it to me! It's not as easy to ride as it looks! :)
:)
If you'd dropped in on Chris in Tempe she would have loved it... If you'd come south to Tucson you would have had to visit me at the UA Health Science Library until after 8pm... :) Thanks for the thoughts though!
1/2 the final was today and the other half is Wednesday then I have 8 days off until the next semester starts (yea!).

Nice pics from everyone! Bob, David and I made it home to Phx Sunday afternoon after staying the night in Overgaard at a friends cabin.
Nice seeing everyone and trying to remember names from last year. It was great riding 191 (666), great scenery to bad some of the pavement was not to good. We tried to beat the storm coming at us but got the downpour about 20 miles south of Hannagan Meadow's.
Thanks again George for makin it happen!

Well finally made it to the Devil this past Saturday (only a month late) Had great weather and a great ride. Though I wish the road surface would be like it is up by Alpine all the way down :p: . Weather was great no threat of rain at all until today on the way back down the hill from Payson on 87 got a few sprinkles and that was it. All in all a great weekend.
