I installed my Hondaline top box yesterday and all went well.. But I did have to modify the original spacers as they drew tight before the bottom plate was firmly attached. If I used them as they were the whole top box was VERY loose, so out came the hacksaw. I simply cut the original spacers in half which was enough to snug up the (top box) bottom plate. Seemed to work just fine,.. but did anyone else have that problem? Top box looks great on there and is now nice and solid. This break in the weather has my tool box in full swing. Put on foam grips too... Not a nice enough forecast to bring it out of storage though.

The OEM top box is designed to have a small bit of lateral play when mounted. This allows the box to shift and spill the air it traps under certain conditions. The unofficial thinking is that this (rigid topbox mounting) is *one* of the causes of the high speed instability that gets reported from time to time. Usual disclaimers apply.

Thanks,... I'm not the type to ride track days with a top box so I'll take the slop outta the backrest and take my chances the bike will be stable at the speeds I travel. The amount of play that was apparent with the stock spacers was too much in my opinion... the box would have rattled way too much. Not to mention a loose box isn't the most inviting thing to lean upon. Plus the box still has the side to side movement available.

I wonder if some thing has changed then. I did my top box last summer and didn't have to cut or modify any thing.

I just tried installing mine and found the same play because I removed the original black plastic plate.

Another post says to leave the original black plate on. The instructions don't mention reusing the original plate, just the spacers.

Thanks to Paul Beuttner for writing the extra instructions!

I'll try it again, with the plate...

original spacer under tailpiece, supplied spacer on top of tailpiece, bracket on top of supplied spacers. I can't figure why you would have had to cut anything down.
The instructions do not mention re-using the original plastic rack because you are never instructed to take it off.

The original plate needs to stay on the bike.

I got it at David Silver Spares. It arrived in less than a week.

Yup, I wasn't going to cut anything, but was thinking of making something to take up the slack.

That's why this site is great. The answer was here before I had to ask.

Thanks for all the comments.
