{now 18-20 April 2008 due to conflict with Moonshine event next door in Illinois}
Hey, everyone!
I'm committing to organizing my first STOC...and the first ever (??) ShowMeSTOC! As soon as i figure out how to publish this in the EVENTS section, it will be there so hold off on your requests, etc.
I've posted this event on the forum calendar, too.
There are numerous hotels in Saint Robert so lodging will be no problem. If you have an inflatable mattress or cot, and don't mind sleeping on the floor (some carpet, some concrete), I have room for around 20...not sure how long the water heater will hold up for shower time, though!!!
Off the cuff and as a means to generate interest and traffic, I've put forth the following draft agenda. This is in by no means locked in stone; heck, the dates might even change by the time April 08 rolls around!
Recommendations for events and items of interest are more than welcome so if you can think of anything the group might like to do, just let me know. I'm more than happy to play tour guide for Fort Leonard Wood and the surrounding area...ideas welcome.
In the near future, I'll be developing a website dedicated to this event that will include maps, brochures, links, and related items that will make it easy for everyone to coordinate their schedules, etc.
Location: Saint Robert, Missouri 65584
Draft Itinerary & Events:
Day 1 {Friday} -
- Riding tour through Fort Leonard Wood (http://www.wood.army.mil), home of the US Army Engineer, Chemical and Military Police Schools; the largest contingent of US Marines outside of a Marine Corps installation; the US Air Force Civil Engineering training detachment, and home of the US Army Maneuver Support Center.
- Tours at the installation and schools' museums; gift shops on-site!
- Ride to/from Lake Pomme de Terre (approx. 4.5 hours)
- Cook-out @ Fowler Home? Local park?
Day 2 {Saturday} -
- Morning ride to/from Branson (5 hour ride) via scenic route
- Barbeque @ Skyline Cycles (local Honda dealer) [Waynesville, Missouri 65583), 1400-UTC
- Another ride to...?
Day 3 {Sunday} -
- To be determined as time draws nearer
Gonna include rt 17?? You still have some of old RT66 in your area... Devils Elbow, etc..

This is also during moonshine next year 4/12. Just in case you didn't see that. You can't always schedule events around all the other events but I would imagine quite a few will be hitting moonshine..

Already a change...don't know how I missed it, but it will be the week following the Moonshine event. Stay posted for more changes!
Oh, and Route 17 and Old Route 66 are on the agenda, although those roads are getting worse every year...knocked my TomTom out of it's cradle this week.

Ok,,I'll watch this one. Maybe the box turtles won't be so thick on the roads that time of year. :turtle
No kidding...at least they don't dart across the road like good ole' possums, squirrels, and rabbits...oh, and don't forget our favorite - Bambi & family.

The A10/GAU8A is impressive, watched em work out at the Gila Bend Gunnery/bombing range in Aridzona...
After they were done, we got to take a look at some of the old deuce and

The TP rounds (Target practice) are aluminum. But when you send a 50 mm round out of a barrel at 4200 feet per second (with 60 rounds leaving the barrels every second), even aluminum can do some pretty amazing damage. BTW, I talked to Public affairs today and it is at least a possibility. Should know more in a week or so.

Sorry about the 5o mm. That was a typo and should have been 30mm. But if the were firing other than aluminum TP, it was a combat bullet. And they can shoot combat rounds at Gilla Bend. Pretty amazing to waych them fire HEI (explosive) rounds. A typical combat load will have a mix of HEI and armour piercing rounds. Due to the rapid fire rate he HEI round will actually follow teh Armour piercing round through the same hole and the detonate once inside. Cool stuff. Just be sure the shards you have aren't Armour piercing. They would contain depleted uranium.........

Didn't mean to hijack the thread with airplane talk. We've probably had enough of that in other threads this year anyway..... :~) But as for admission to the range to watch an A-10 demo during ShowMeSTOC....... Looks like a go. I talked with the range today, and they said all it takes is for me to give them a call with numbers about a month out, and then for the Thunderbolts (A-10's) to be on that days schedule. And I do have some influence on the flying schedule. So barring bad weather, we should be able to do it.

Before getting to wound up, you better check the rules and regs for riding on FLW. We had to remove it from the Anysoldier.com ride because most of the riders would not qualify to ride on base.

Riding regulations on Fort Leonard Wood are pretty strict. That being said, though, Cannon Range is located on but off (?) Fort Leonard Wood. Access is from Highway 17. As time draws closer, I'll put together a strip map for general information.
For those that want to ride on post (and I hope to facilitate a post tour), the regulations are pretty specific. I think you can get visitor passes, though, as long as you do these things:
1 - Must have a reflective vest or belt. The reflective part of your jackets don't count. (pictures coming soon - I have the vest, check eBay or online for MilitarySpec vest).
2 - Must have a MSF card.
3 - Long sleeve shirts, no shorts, and footware that goes over your ankles for both passenger and rider.
I will be TDY (temporary duty for you in the civilian world) for 3 weeks next month, but after that I intend on putting together a pretty firm schedule that includes explosions and the like. Once I get the registration page set up, I should be able to take the roster of participants to post and get temp passes for everyone...possibly even an MP escort. Our former commanding general (Major General Randy Castro) was an avid rider, albeit on a HD. The post is very pro-rider, that's for certain.
Will do my best to work out the kinks regarding access to and about Fort Leonard Wood and keeping those interested up to date!

Hey, all!
As luck would have it, my Army job is going to have me 1/2 way across the country the entire month of April (back to Fort Belvoir) and some of May.
I realize that this may be considered bad timing and all, but coulnd't be avoided. Need to know if anyone else out there in MIZZOU land would be willing to take over hosting the 1st-ever SHOWMESTOC. If not, I'm going to have to bow out until next year and try to put an event together then.
Seemed like there was a lot of support for this effort - I'm sure the A10s would have been awesome, not to mention the rides through the Lake of the Ozarks and Branson areas.

I don't know that you really need a host. Everyone that was interested just needs to pick a place to meet saturday morning, have breakfest, and go for a ride. Make plans on the fly...that how NCSTOC was last year and NatSTOC went last year. Worked out great. Some went one way, others another way;;;and everyone meet back that night at the lodge for dinner and BS.
Obviously some parts of the event may have to be cancelled like the Base Tour since I assume attendies would have needed you to get them in.

Since I won't be able to coordinate anything while I'm out of town, I recommend meeting at the local Honda dealer (http://www.skylinecycles.net, who indicated that he's be more than willing to have everyone us his place as a kick-off location. It's close to Fort Leonard Wood and within 45 minutes of the Lake of the Ozarks.
There are many, many lodging options for the St Robert area. The zip code for those using online reservation systems (Priceline.com, Hotwire.com, expedia.com) is 65584 or 65584, the latter being Waynesville.
There are numerous campgrounds within a 30 mile radius as well. Near Lebanon, Missouri, is a KOA campground managed by a local RV dealer -well maintained.
If I can be of any help, don't hesitate to email.

All dressed up and no where to go? Here I just get my bike yesterday and start looking for a place to get to know some of you folks and I found this ride. As I am reading from the top I get more and more excited. I even went and got the calendar and conversed with my wife about the dates. Then I sit down and read some more of the postings and now I have to wonder if it will still take place? If it does, count me in. With or without the A-10's. Incidentally, I spread fertilizer on the Ft. Leonard Wood golf course called Piney Valley. Really beautiful views and good roads. I don't think we would have to jump thru any hoops just to drive thru. They check you pretty good at the gate. Use mirrors to look under your vehicle, etc. I drove up in a semi-floater fertilizer truck which had to draw a little extra attention!!!

Don't worry, I'm sure it will happen... may not get the drive-thru or A10's but that's really just the cherry on top of the whip cream.. the local riding is the entire Sundae..
If just 1 other person shows up, it's a success in my opinion.. however, I would just about guarantee more than one person will show up for this one. After all, it is about the ride.

NOthing yet for 4Iner as far as A10s shoot-em-up.
Once again, I'm (sadly) doing to be TDY all the month of April to Ft Belvoir, so someone please take some pics.
Tomorrow I'll put up a quick website with pictures of the dealership, links, and a few routes I personally enjoy on nice weekends. There are plenty of good ones around.
If anyone needs the requirements for getting on Fort Leonard Wood, just let me know. Off the top of my head, here's what I know:
(if you don't have DoD stickers):
1 - Proof of MSF course completion. Date is irrellevant.
2 - Hi-Vis belt, vest, or a jacket with no less than 75" of reflective, bright material. I've been getting on post without the dork vest or belt with my new Olympia AST Hi-Viz jacket
3 - License/proof of insurance
I think with these on-hand, you should be able to get a temp pass, even without a DoD ID card. Best bet is to visit the visitors' center at the front gate (map to be posted on the website tomorrow) Mon-Friday.

Doug, sounds like you've handled the primary items. All we need now is a start time.
I'll be camping, happy to meet anyone else in the area for dinner Friday, Saturday; breakfast Saturday, Sunday; ride Saturday from the Honda shop. Meet there around 9ish? Assume they'll have coffee at least. Breakfast _before_ that if someone knows a good place, say, around 8??

I just re-read all of these posts and looked at the Showmestoc site. Nothing in concrete yet but if we are starting out Saturday it looks like the Honda dealer at 9:00am is the place. I suppose we're still waiting to see if 4Iner can round up an A-10 exhibition for Friday. I will probably make an rsvp at Comfort Inn for Sat. night and wait a little longer for word about Friday at the Fort.
I'm not far away so if we end up making a last minute plans for a Saturday ride I can be there with bells on. I know, I know, it won't hold a candle to Muchmore's sequin panties but it's all I got.
I have read enough about this event to make it a priority to attend. Lots of good lodging, lots of good restaurants, lots of good roads, lots of good peoples, lots of good bikes, a dealer willing to participate. All we need is riding weather.

No need to wear hi-vis or have an MSF card. The Cannon Range is its own entity and not part of the fort. I may have to work that day (to make sure we have a contoller at Whiteman), so I think it best to leave the "where to meet descision" up to the organizers. But I have clearance for up to 30 participants. (That number could be increased if you think I need to) And I can give my cell phone number to somebody that will be on the ground at the event. The range officer said all the group needs to do is show up. The enterance to the range is about 13 miles south of I-44 on MO 17. There is a sign on the east (left) side of the hwy just past the county line. Turn left and the road will take you to the range. Again they have us on thier schedule and all I need to do is give the range officer a call a couple of days prior to re-confirm. If I don't have to work I'll be there, but just in case I can't make it I need someone to be my point of contact with the group. PM me.

Thanks 4Iner! This is almost as exciting as when I went to pick up my new ST. Too far out to know about a weather forecast but considering we have had cold and 3214" of rain year to date it's gotta start drying up sometime.
Would anybody get upset if I throw out a few options and see if there are any takers? I'm not trying/don't want to step on the organizers feet.
As far as a meeting place on the Friday to see the Warthog exhibition: I found a McDonalds at Hwy 44 exit 156 north. The exit for Hwy 17 is exit 153 but I don't know that there is any choke and pukes at that exit to get a cup of coffee. We can meet at that McDonalds @ 310 Ichord say around 8:15am or so and we should only be 30 minutes or less from the Cannon Range.
I looked up hotels in St. Robert, MO for the 18th & 19th. I am a Choice Hotels member so I try to stay there whenever possible. The Comfort Inn is a bit pricey and only has a few rooms left, none of which is a double bed type room. The Econolodge is $53.96+ tax and they do have some double rooms left. I'd be happy to share the room just not my bed!!!!! If any of you travel with a sleeping bag we can sneak as many in there as is comfortable. You can PM me if interested.

Hey 4Iner! As long as you are filling the shoes of a super-hero, can you make a call and have Whiteman send down a couple of Stealthy Type Bombers for a low level fly by. You know...low enough to dust off our helmets? Can't thank you enough. If you can make this event I'd be happy to buy dinner.
Darn shame Doug will not be able to make this after all the work. Does the military still frown on AWOL? Maybe he can sneak out for a while and go un-noticed.

AWOL does apply to civilians, sadly...otherwise, what's 1000 miles 1 way amongst friends?
Trailored the Missouri mule again this year for my stint here @ Ft Belvoir. Spent the day riding up and down the Shenandoah Valley...65 degrees, sun, little wind, good tunes, little traffic, great curves...thought I was in heaven until my Zumo binged me...
At a gas station near the Shenandoah Valley, I met a fella from St Louis who road his FJR1300 all the way here...better man than me. We paired up for a hundred miles or so, the went separate ways.
Pictures coming soon...heading to PA tomorrow early, and then back before class starts Monday AM.
Wish I could be there for the inaugural ShowMeSTOC...I know I'm going to miss something special.

No problem...love organizing stuff like this when I can, especially for a great bunch like the STOC.
I use Google's Picasa and you can post large pictures there. If you have a file sharing site like that, it would work pretty good. I might see if I can give you access to my Picassa site and you could upload the pictures to it. PM me your email address and I'll see if I can grant access to you.
For videos, I can integrate YouTube into the ShowMeSTOC website. Might be best to link up and hand off a DVD or you could just send me a copy. We could do the pictures the same way as well...defiance can't be that far from St Rober. Either way would be great!!!!
As far as picture size, bigger the better. I can edit as needed...lots of experience.

Then about 2 or 3 days ago it went to 40% on Friday and 30% on Saturday. Tonight it says 60% for Friday. I tell you right now I don't care if we have a tornado touch down and 3 inches of rain per hour for 10 hours straight I am going to St.Robert/Ft. Wood if all I do is stop at a gas station and drink a chocolate milk and eat a pack of mini donuts.
I have missed 2 rides in March due to weather. I missed Moonshine due to weather. Do I sound bitter?:d1:

Rich, everyone has gone their separate ways after the rally today so I don't expect there will be a ride tomorrow.
I had an unbelievable time today. We were greeted by two of our finest serving our country. Capt. Mike "Crunch" Sadler and Sgt. Bill Anderson. We were given a briefing and then kept an eye on the weather. It was looking like there was going to be no chance of getting the A-10's in to practice because of weather minimums. It was not a VFR (that's Visual Flight Rules to you non-pilots) day. We had just barely enough ceiling to commence firing the 30mm Gatling Gun on these planes. All I can say is WOW!!! Talk about intense...I will remember that for the rest of my life. We were given Level 5 clearance (sounds important don't it?) to occupy the command tower. You have no idea how loud a rapid fire gun can be until you've heard this bird shoot. Let's just say I'm glad I wore dark colored under garments today.
After the range we stopped at the local stainless steel diner and had lunch. We talked about hot topics and told a few good stories. A perfect day if you don't count the weather. I enjoyed meeting everyone as this was my first ST-Owners rally. On deck was Peter, George, Rich, Danny and Danny's FIL, Dennis and myself. All fine chaps and passionate about one common interest, our ST's and one Gold Wing.
Once again, many thanks to 4Iner and Doug for getting this off the ground. I hope many more events are scheduled when Doug get's back. I took some pictures and a video but after reviewing it a good portion is not worthy of posting. I will edit and post what did turn out in the near future.

Just to add a little to what Jeff (Dinky Diesel) said about Saturday's ride in the rain------many, many thanks to Chuck for setting up the A10 cannon run. His influence had a great deal to do with the decision to make it a "go" in spite of the questionable weather and visibility. After every cannon run, all we had to do is look over to Jeff or George's face to know that it was a WOW. Their grins said it all. No words to describe it--------What a great focus for an annual event.

Tho the weather sucked, the companionship was great. I appreciate youse guys letting me lead out after the demo in case my tank ran dry. I had 327 miles on it when I pulled into the shell station at Waynesville, took 7.3 gal so I was good for maybe another 4.5 miles. :D
A-10s are awesome. I'm sure they are a favorite of the ground troops in Afgan and Iraq. Crunch and Bill said just call ahead for anyone else who wants to visit the Cannon Range at Ft. Leonardwood. Fone numbers were passed around.
I headed east from St.Rober after lunch (don't order the Ruben!) Spent hours and miles on MO back roads til after dark, gassed up at I-57 and I-64 and hit the slab for IN. Got into lots more rain before making it to my sister's place around 1AM eastern.
There's many miles of good roads in Missouri. I'll be back thru the Ozarks during second half of May.
Gonna take a couple days break here then head on to the tech-STOC in NJ next weekend.

I just realized I made a bad oversight. I forgot to mention that Spotz made a cameo appearance. You can see Capt. "Crunch" in the video say "Oh, Dude!" and look behind him at someone coming down the road as Tom made his way to the Cannon Range just seconds after the range went off hot. He missed the show but we enjoyed his company for the remainder of the day.

Jeff you are being to hard on yourself I think the stills turned out great and video isn't to bad either considering the weather and you tube as the disturbtion media. Of course the weather today is perfect for such goings on. I think I see a new 40d in my future.
The weather truly did suck, but it's always good to meet like minded souls. Motorcycles, airplanes, guns what's not to like.

Oh man I just got home. I was watching over that video and it got my heart racing all over again. There are no words to describe what we saw, 70 rounds/sec, planes at 400mph 300-500 ft off the ground, the meter maid getting boxed in (had to be there) it was incredible. Its still just amazing to think that the whole point of these exercises is to "sight in" the planes aim.
The man most see talking in the background of the video was Mike Sadler, this guy pulled every string he could to get live rounds and to make mother nature cooperate, what a deal.
I don't know how many have seen stuff like this before, live fire, but it is amazing. I have grown up around guns and shooting/hunting my whole life but OMG, it pounds your chest when they fire. It was unbelievable.

Thanks Tom, for the kind words. I have to take the heat because the 40D and my Vid Cam are capable of really, really good results but I screwed up some settings and didn't realize it until I looked at them on the computer. I shouldn't have been trying to hand hold the video.
I have been thinking about the May 14th and 15th event showcasing the C130 and C17. I can't wait! It is on a Wed. and Thu. so maybe it won't be crowded. I am kind of a selfish person in that I'm afraid if we make this too public it will get ruined. You know how it goes...someone throws a beer can out the window and phone calls are made and then that's the end of pubilc access.
I PM'd Chuck to ask if he would pass along our gratitude to Sadler and Anderson. He said he has already and will do a follow up. I guess I should write a thank you note and mail it to be proper.
I am driving my wife nuts. Picture this - my big, dorky, self running around the house trying to perfect my sound effects imitation of the A-10 doing its thing. The whine of the GE Turbofans spooling up on approach, the Warthog flatulence and then the wind down from the Gatling gun. I'm getting pretty good at it!
