As I posted a few days ago, I'm looking to check the valves on my ST1100. I have a video showing how this is done and it looks like all I need now is some study time and a set of feeler gauges.

I've seen two types of feeler gauges recommended. One is the Go-No-Go feeler gauge which I can pick up from O'Reilly Auto for $10 (may have to order it, their site doesn't list availability for this item).

The other thing I've seen recommended is the angled or offset feeler gauges. I should be able to get them at O'Reilly Auto as well.

Is one of these better than the other for the ST1100?

Buy the set that has the sizes ya need. I've found the "angled" gauges don't have the range we need.

I bought my current set at Auto Zone. Straight blades with lots of choices. They are flexible enuff for our needs.

Sounds good. I looked at them while I was at lunch. O'Reilly Auto had one for $5.99 which had 32 blades between .0015" (.038mm) and .035" (.889mm). That sounds like the one to get because it has the widest range of sizes. Their angled ones only came with 12 sizes which doesn't sound like enough.

The straight guages work just fine, as there is plenty of room and angle to work with.

One option you haven't mentioned:

Griot's Garage sells true metric gauges, not U.S. with odd size metric equivilents marked. Not a real big deal, but they do make life a little bit easier.

I have the Sears Craftsman 26-blade Master Offset Gauge set @ $7.99, .005 (.13mm) - .030 (.76mm). The offset is a must on the ST13 and assume the same for the ST11, in order to get accurate readings.

Thanks but they no longer carry them. Here's the response I received when I inquired about them:

Hello Jason,

Thank you for taking the time to email us with your question. In the past we carried our Facom Metric Feeler Gauges. However, those have been discontinued and we no longer have any left in stock. These were discontinued because the availability of Facom tools inside the United States has become very limited, so we are not able to carry their line of tools anymore. However, we are continuing to pursue that relationship to hopefully bring Facom tools back into our product line in the future. At this point we have not released a replacement for those feeler gauges, but I have forwarded your request for this item to our Merchandising Department for their review.

Jason, thank you again for your email. If there is anything else I can help you with please feel free to respond to this email or call our Customer Service Department during regular business hours, Monday-Friday 6am-6pm PST and Saturday 7am-3:30pm PST.

Have fun in your garage!

Too bad. I like my set. I wonder if anyone else sells metric feelers.

A google search returns these:
