YOOPER STOC “2” July 25/26/27, 2008

The weekend of July 25/26/27 in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula YOOPERSTOC “2“, this is an informal gathering of riders, meet and greet, travel to the UP. Take in the Great Lakes of North America. Come and meet some old friends or make new ones, Yoopers as we locals are called comes from living in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan thus shortened to the UP by many, finally came to be YOOPER.

There is one motel in town 906 346 7901 - 1 888 252 9495 - www.gwinnmi.com/modeltowne.html e mail modeltowneinn@ironbay.net 16 rooms
Marquette is 30 miles away with plenty of Lodging,
Munising is 42 miles away with plenty of Lodging,
Escanaba is 50 miles away with plenty of lodging.
Campgrounds there are several federal forest campgrounds in the area (primitive and a short ride down a dirt road)
Horseshoe lake is a private campground and has showers etc. 906 346 9937 they have a group camping area and I believe some rental units.
I have some limited camping in my yard N 46 15.409 W 087 29.086 Camp fire any night someone is here. Dannyk

Your on your own for food and snacks. Friday night the wood fired grill will be going, bring yourself something to cook or visit some of the local eateries, UP North Lodge is ¾ of a mile away,
Rodney’s is about 3 miles away serving pizza’s and cudighi sandwiches.

Suggested Ride #1 Saturday to the Keweenaw Peninsula up to Copper Harbor a 350 mile round trip. Leave at 8 a.m. Eastern daylight time, breakfast at the Hilltop in L’Anse.

Suggested Ride #2 Saturday to the harbor in Marquette and to Miners Castle east of Munising then down M94 to the Buckhorn road and return, Lunch at the Beartrap where fresh pasties will be served. Leave at 10 a.m. a 200 mile round trip. I need to know how many will make this ride as the pasty’s are made fresh everyday so they would like a head count.

Suggested Ride #3 Saturday evening sunset bay, moonlight bay ride, ride M94 to Autrain/Forrest lake road to M28 at Autrain then west along the south shore of Lake Superior stop at one of the roadside pull offs and watch the sunset and the full moon rise, play in the big lake if you so desire. Leave at 8:30 p.m.

Directions to my house, GPS Coordinates are N46 15.409 W87 29.086 if coming from the south on state hwy M35 from Gladstone, Escanaba area go north through Gwinn and turn at Hideaway (tavern) this road is called serenity drive, continue to the 4 way stop, (tall timber store is on the right), continue straight through that intersection about a ¼ of a mile there is a fork in the road, bear left and a half mile from there on the left is my driveway, I’ll have a STOC cardboard sign out at the entrance to the driveway.

If coming from the north through Palmer, Suomi, etc. on State hwy M 35, take County road 557 on your right just after the Chipmunk field sign, continue on to the 4 way stop, (tall timber store will be on your right) turn right there go about ¼ mile to the fork in the road, bear left and about a half mile in on the left is my driveway.

If coming from the southwest, through Iron Mountain or Crystal falls area take M95 to the Felch turn off this should be M 69. From Iron Mountain it will be on the right side, if from Crystal falls turn right on M 95 and go south a few miles to M 69 on your left. After several miles look for the turn off to Ralph, proceed to Ralph and turn right at that intersection to Arnold and turn left on county road 557 towards Gwinn, you will come to the intersection where the Tall timber store is located, turn left and follow the above directions to my house (the section of road from the county line to tall timber is about 17 miles and is a little rough so if you come this way be careful, otherwise the rest of the road is nice.

If coming from the Mackinaw bridge area, the toll for the bridge is ? toll rates are due to increase in March don't know what they will be for a motorcycle. Take US 2 west to the town of Rapid River, its about two and a half hours from the bridge, (watch your speed) just west of rapid river take US 41 north about 3 miles turn left on that county road to Perkins, at Perkins you will intersect State hwy M 35, go straight ahead that will take you to Gwinn approximately 30 miles or so. (Just before Gwinn is the Model Town Inn on your right) if you are moteling, otherwise continue on the hwy through Gwinn and continue on M35 you will cross the middle branch of the Escanaba river, when you reach the top of that hill you will see the Hideaway tavern on your left, turn left on that road, called serenity drive, go to the 4 way stop, the Tall Timber Grocery will be on your right, go straight through that intersection around a ¼ of a mile the road forks, take the left fork go about ½ mile my driveway is on the left STOC sign will be at the driveway.

Great dual sport riding also available

Danny,

I thought your part of the country was amazingly beautiful. Looking forward to exploring more of it in 2008. It is already on my calendar. :D Besides I never got a cudighi last time and I gotta try one.

It is now on my calendar. I lived in Marquette nearly 20 years ago and miss the area dearly. I have to convince my wife that we need to put th ST on the trailer for the long part of the trip and jump on the bike just over the bridge.

Gonna do all we can to be there!

Something to consider folks, we had great people from Texas, Louisiana, Wisconsin, Minnesota, West Virginia, Ohio, Illinois, and Missouri with a few from our own state, but the visitors far outnumbered the wolverine participents, where are you trolls, its only a days ride here and this is the only Michigan ST event in the STOC calendar. How about you fellow STers in Canada, were just across the big lake, come to the states, we will return the visit. :D

UNBELIEVABLE!

:doh1: I REALLY CAN'T BELIEVE IT! One of the event's I really wanted to attend and which date do you pick??? My anniversary!:( My wife isn't quite as enough of a MC enthusiast for her to for-go the anniversary for this! 1 Michigan troll counted out all ready! Besides, there's no way she'd make it that far on her Magna!!! (All the gasoline stops would add an extra day to the trip...:crackup ) I am bummed thou! Dang!:(

Hi Tom! How's this...If Ahnna would have rode along last year, the plan was to leave Friday AM, stay at a nice resort along the way.... have an "us" night by ourselves, sleep in, nice breakfast etc... Visit and dinner with the group on Saturday (no long rides to be fresh for our ride home)... then stay at an "Up North" lodge Sat pm ... nice group breakfast, and ride home Sunday..... Even you could find somehow to throw a little romance at Cindy along the way!!! Now go hide one of those extra Christmas presents you bought her somewhere in the basement so you have something nice to give her on your anniversary... and we'll see you in July!!! problem solved...you're welcome...and I saved you $50.

Danny I Will try to make again in '08. We stopped by and said hi on our way around the "Big Lake" last year and the weather and the ride was great. So this is one troll that at mid winter is a definite maybe. As spring approaches I hope I'll be able to firm that up.

Unbelievable!:hat1:

Out of the frying pan and into the fire!!! My lovely wife just read this post and is beating me with a stick!:o4: Not really but I'm thinking we might make this trip? I caught a lot of flack about her not being an MC enthusiast enough to go on this trip because It was her ideal to take the MSF class on our anniversary! I totally forget about that!:doh1: Can you all say: Unbeliever is in the dog house now... (Not really:-D )

OK dannyk, put us as a might make it! Now to see if the vacation time and budget can squeeze this trip in!

Big question to the yoopers from Cindy, are there going to be gas stations every 90-100 miles for her magna? If not I might have to follow Mac up and sneak a gas can into his unigo... That might not work either as we probably couldn't keep up with him...hmmm, wonder if the Tacoma will pull the bikes...(oh the shame of it...LOL)

That was a serious question too. Any refueling advice for up there would be great!!

Tom if you come across the Big Mac, and take US 2 there is gas at the bridge, in Manistique, Rapid River and in Gwinn, if you take M 28 across there is gas at Newberry, Munising, etc. From where you are its probably shorter to go through Chicago and up, but you would have to deal with that. :biker:

Just a heads up, the local motel has closed its doors, I have tried to contact them for a group rate, but no luck. The lot wasn't plowed the last couple of storms. I have heard that it is sold, but haven't been able to make any contact with anyone. Funny as this july is the centennial celebration of this little mining town and there are things in the works, for the motel not to be open or accepting reservations seems strange to me. Danny

Yooper SToc stop-over point

Gang

I will be leaving Holland Mi around 5:00 on Thursday and heading to my property near Frankfort Mi. about a 3 hr ride from Holland. Then heading north in the AM to Yooper SToc on Friday. I have room at my Frankfort property for people to camp if you need a place to stop. Water and power but no shower or outhouse, you can take a cold shower outside and I may have a outhouse constructed by then but no promise.

Unbelievable! (Insert smiley waving hat)

My wife and I left the house @ 8:00a.m. Monday morning and rode to Ludington Mi. Stayed there for the night and took the U.S.S. Badger across the BIG lake on Tuesday. From there we rode up to Iron Mountain, Mi. and enjoyed a great dinner, watched T.V. and did a few other things before turning in! We are up and about this morning and ready to head to Laurium, Mi. where we booked a 2 night stay @ the Laurium Manor! Thursday we plan on exploring Copper Harbor! Having a great time and planning to be @ Dannyk's Friday eve!!! Even though we are a month late, what a great way to celebrate our 10th anniversary!!!!

See you all @ Yooper_Stoc!!!!

Well, the trip is going fantastic! Weather has been great and we are having a ball! More on that later.
