The Salton Sea is one of Southern California Desert's best kept secrets! The Salton Sea is the largest lake in California! It is 125 feet below sea level! It is 25% more salty than the ocean! It is a great place for camping, boating, fishing, bird watching (it is on the bird migratory corridor), photography, and of course RIDING!
The Salton Sea is CLEAN! Don't let anyone else tell you otherwise! There are many mistaken conceptions about the Salton Sea that are all false. It doesn't smell! It is not polluted! It is not a "dead" sea! You can swim in it! You can boat in it! You can fish in it! It is full of life such as fish and birds. It is a very beautiful large body of water in the middle of a beautiful desert environment, especially at sunset! I have spent many nights there camping, exploring and photographing, and still have not seen it all!
The three campsites reserved at the park is for 8 people each. I have contacted the park to tell them that we are a friendly motorcycle group and will be parking our bikes there also. There is still plenty of campsites available if you wish to reserve more during the event.
Here is the online website for Reserve America where you can reserve more campsites if you'd like in this park or the other close by campgrounds such as Mecca Beach Campground:
http://209.144.27.3/forums/images/icons/tent2.gif RESERVE AMERICA - SALTON SEA (http://www.reserveamerica.com/ca/Salton_Sea_Sra/Campground/r/campgroundDetails.do?page=details&agency=CA&parkId=120079) http://209.144.27.3/forums/images/icons/tent2.gif
The campsites have tables, fire-rings and verandas for shade. Water is also available.
There are coin-op showers and clean bathrooms!
Also at the park is the Salton Sea Information - Nature Center with free WI-FI!
There is also a children's playground!
Nearby towns are Mecca and Niland, with Brawley and Indio being the closest big towns.
Plenty of motels and restaurants if needed.
Nearby recreation areas is the largest park in California: The Anza Borrego Desert State Park (http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=638).
Also nearby is the Imperial Dunes Recreational Area (http://www.desertusa.com/sandhills/sandhills.html) with Glamis being its center.
If you are into Adventure Bike Riding you have the whole desert around you to try your skills!
I have included down below a few map pics from Google Earth and Microsoft's Streets and Maps.
More info forthcoming if needed.
REMINDER: This is a dry desert environment!
Dress properly! Bring hats and sun-screen!
It can also get cold at night!
DRINK PLENTY OF WATER!!!
I will be there Friday to greet you!

The two tent sites I reserved will be free to the first 16 folks that show up. So... As for how many tents? If they allow 8 people per site then I can only assume that means 8 tents per site. The info on the park's website doesn't say otherwise. I have been trying to contact them, but their darn phone keeps going to a fax signal! I left a message at the other number, but haven't heard back from them yet. I even called the region's headquaters, but they were no help. I'll keep trying.

Hey Fred, maybe some exploration before the event would be in order, sort of like CreSTOC? Hard to ignore people standing in front of you. What are you doing this weekend? Oh, I forgot, you don't ride hot.....never mind.

Here is some pics of the Salton Sea I took on a trip out there...
The first 6 shots and the last one are from a place near the campground called Bombay Beach. It is a small retirement village that a section of it got flooded years back. A lot of great photographers had used this spot for some really intriguing and surrealistic pictures; as you can see. Some of them the best black and white photography I have ever seen! I'll be glad to guide you there.

The only reason I asked about how many tents is that the last site I stayed at in WA had a 3 site max per site....

It is a very good question Dan. I'm still trying to find out. I'll let you and everybody know more when I get somebody on the DAMN PHONE! Aaaggghh!!! :( :D
You should consider bringing your Kawi KLR for some trail running. I can give some good tips on local trails around there, like the Salt Creek - Bradshaw Trail road.

That was weird, we had room for what, 4 more or 8 if everyone had a tent like Steves...almost a one man tent.

Yup. I think it is because of the vehicles.
But it had a limit of 3 per site (although some of the sites had more...)
<D>
PS: Fred: The KLR suggestion is great. Might have to do that!

When they limit number of tents, they're thinking of how many _cars will be parked there. 4 to 6 bikes is not a problem. Of course, the rangers don't think of it that way, "Just following the rules, sir."
Sense: if it was really common, there would be more of it.

Boy! Do I hear you! I've been trying to contact the ranger at the campground just about this issue! Still getting a fax signal on the voice line! I've left two messages on the other number, but no returns. I'm going to call the regional director again and drill a new one! Or just try my famous charm instead! LOL. Hmmm... wonder if we should do the scouting mission like Dana suggested.
I was actually thinking that I want to scout out that lodge / camp facility that Raven suggested for CreSTOC. I bet we could scout both in one long day of riding....or we could run up to my cabin and scout the lodge site on saturday, crash over night and bust out to the salton sea on the way home on Sunday.
Could be a nice ride connecting Big Bear to salton sea to Idywyld south to SD....
Hmmmm....

Hy yuck, yuck, yuck.
Just so happens I know a couple of places to EAT in that part of the world. Fancy that:) Hmmmmm
I think I have seen the Salton at its best and worst. Best: I stopped in to get some shade at the Sonny Bono Wildlife Area one Sunday morning. Turns out it was the Audobon Society bird count weekend. Lots of peoples around counting birdies. Lots of really attractive peoples counting birdies:)
I was camped over on the East side during the fish molt one year. Bad choice. Wind from the west, the dead fish piled up on the east. Not only did it smell pretty foul, but the FLIES.
Dual sport might be an option here. There are some serious canal roads and ways to get into the Glamis area.
For those that have never been, or know, the biggest squatter area that I know of is in the Niland area. Called "The Slabs" (a former air force base) there are LOTS of old hippies and such parked around there. Plus the Bible guy...Who paints a 3 story rock about every three years....
Anyway, baring something amazing, I'm guessing I'll be there!

OK! Just got off the phone with the park's superindentant's office. Sharon! What a grand gal! There is only one person at the park right now due to it being off season. So hard for even them to get through.
Sharon answered some of my questions and concerns... Tents: Being the park is in the desert there should be no problem with multiply tents on a given campsite. I assured her that we would only pitch up to 8 tents per site and she felt that wasn't a problem. The bikes also should not a be a problem. At the park is ample parking if they feel it is a overflow issue, but I am not seeing a problem with parking up to 8 bikes per site as long as we are neat. But then again we are Honda riders and as you know we are the nicest (and neatest) people on Earth! LOL.
So I feel we are a go! Again I wish to urge you to reserve other campsites if you are planning on attending. I can only afford two sites which I will gladly share for free to the first 15 campers showing up (save a space for me). Other than that you are kind of on your own. But I want to assure you that this park is usually very open as most people are not aware of the Salton Sea as a destination, except of course the retired RV'ers who have their own campsites for themselves.
As Big Tom pointed out in his previous post there is a very interesting Squatters campground nearby that use to be a military base that has been taken over by these year-round old hippie types (my kind of people!). It would be worth visiting. Especially the Bible Guy who has painted his section of desert in hi-glow color paint devoted to his faith. I'll find some pics of this place and post them.
I created a thread called: Places To See. Things To Do. Check it out. Thanks to BigTom for reminding me about Slab City and Salvation Mountain. I sure hope you can make it Tom!

That's great that you'll be showing up Mark! Now if I can just get the other Western states Mods out there we can have a good ol' fashion lynchin' party! LOL. ;) :D
As for the sites; as I said earlier I only reserved two sites with 8 people max per site. So that's a total of 16 souls and tents. I will offer these free to the first 14-15 folks (including myself of course) to show up. After that I suggest you reserve a site for yourself and friends if needed. The standard tent sites are about $17 each a day. I really don't anticipate any problems with getting sites. The Salton Sea is not a very well known destination. And there is plenty more campgrounds in the local area such as Mecca Beach, etc. Check the Web.
We'll see ya there! :hotpepper :clap2:
Where is that delete and banned button when I need it!

Great on the sites; but, I didn't count how many said "I'm in"... :)

It's like talking to a brick wall! LOL... Louie Louie Louie... Please read the event opening post about the misconceptions of the Salton Sea. I have spent a lot time there and have found none of what you speak. As for hot... Late Oct. should be just fine. The Salton Sea does not stink! If there is a smell it is no worse then any ocean beach in America. Once in a great while there is a algae bloom due to high water temps. which can deplete the oxygen levels in the lake causing a fish die-off, but that doesn't happen often. I knew this was going to come up! Don't scare the folks please. Hope to see you there!

Ok..I've lived here since 1991 and there are massive fish dieoffs and it sometimes stinks a lot. However, its a nice place and did not mean to be negative about it. October may be a good time.Lots of exotic birds and nice views. The sea is toxic from farm runoffs from the imperial and riverside counties.
One piece of advice, do not drink the water and enjoy your stay. Hope to see you around if I am able to make it.

I am a third generation Californian and my Aunt is a ranger in the Anza Borrego, and my uncle is a botanist professor at Cal-Poly. I've been camping in that desert area for as long as I can remember and I have only smelled the Salton Sea bad one year after a algae bloom fish die-off and that was on the West Shore near you. This also happens in the ocean occasionally.
As for not drinking the water... It is 25% saltier than the ocean, so I think that would not be a good idea! The lake is NOT POLLUTED! There are no higher toxic levels in the water then anywhere else, including the ocean. In fact any toxins present are lower than some areas. Run off from agriculture is mostly nutrients; hench the high life population at the lake. The lake is replenished with local agriculture fresh water irrigation run-off from the Colorado River. You can swim in it! You can fish in it and eat the fish! I've done both. These are the mis-conceptions I was speaking of, and these myths have caused people to not go to the lake for recreation. Maybe that's a good thing! More for us!
I again refer you to my previous post and link to the correct information regarding the lake's environment and conditions.

Im going to try and make it too. I grew up spending many weekends on the other (Hwy. 86) side of the sea. We had a trailer in one of the trailer parks for over 20 years at Desert Shores. A lot of good memories. Its been awhile but I still love the area and October should be a good time for camping at the Salton Sea.

Come one, come all, something for everybody. Last time I went up Palomar, I followed a 'Guzzi.
The BMW folks have a serious meeting on Jan. 1 or so every year in that part of the world....They even get a KLR/ST/FJR or two!
Seriously lots of fun riding in that part of the world. And you can go to Mecca and Medina in the same day. Bagdad, too, but you have to do some riding:) And Rodeo Drive is just down the way....
Suggestion for Saturday night dinner: hobo stew.
If this is a yes I will put a big pot (and lid) into my packing... ought to look funny going down the highway... lol.
Ought to be fun trying to heat a big pot of *stuff* on our camp stoves too!
Coffee... Fred obviously has not used (or tasted) coffee brewed in one of the little espresso makers... you're in for a treat Fred, especially because I have some Mellow Yellow from Louisiana that I'll bring along.

I have been really enjoying this thread. I grew up in El Centro, and used to water ski in the Salton Sea. It has been 25% saltier than the oceans forever. I am sure the New River is still a cesspool. I am not a camper, but I will come down for a day to have some fun with everyone.
If everyone is riding up to Mt. Palomar (S-7 I presume from the east) we can stop off for lunch with all the squids at Mothers Cafe at the top. (Last time I was up there a group had lost one of their riders on the curves coming up on S-6 in the fog). The observatory is only a few miles up the road from Mothers, and if you have not been there, it is a nice half hour diversion.
The dates are in my book!

I am very pleased you will be coming Tommy!
Just a note on the New River myth... sigh... This is what I mean about people's misconceptions about the Salton Sea! The New River is a stream that flows into the Salton Sea from Mexico at the south end of the lake. Where the New River starts in Mexico and crosses the border (can't make Nature illegal I'm afraid) it is very polluted due to Mexico's farming practices. By the time it reaches the lake it has gone through miles and miles of natural ground filtration and is not a hazard when it trickles into the lake. Not a issue! Whew! Glad we got that outta the way!
Now come on! Enjoy the Sea! Bring your fishing poles and we'll roast some Tilapia and fighting jumbo Corvina! Yummy!
FISHING AT THE SALTON SEA! (http://www.saltwatersportsman.com/saltwater/fishing/article/0,12746,386839,00.html/)
we can stop off for lunch with all the squids at Mothers Cafe at the top.
The 1st time I stopped at Mother's Cafe I ripped off my gear and then my shirt and asked if there was a bug stuck to my chest.
I had watched a bug fly from the right towards me; but, lost sight of it as I was in one of those great left sweepers. Then I felt something inside my shirt...
I was leading 3 bikes so I didn't want to stop... every right hand turn I was pounding my chest trying to kill whatever was crawling on me... then it stung me!
At the top my friend Kurt kindly used a credit card to flick the stinger out of my chest. He and Chris then (unmercifully) tried not to laugh as I twitched and jumped through their lunch... I wasn't interested in food, for some reason.
Never did find the bee. :-)

The observatory is cool, well worth the trip!. But, then you'd expect me to say that (10" Dobson in the backyard). :-)

I'll be eating some Hot Dogs and Beans.... can't get away with a camp out without those hot dogs and beans... :)

Fred,
Do not forget you have a National Park (Joshua Tree) just North of the Salton Sea. A loop ride can be made by going in at the South end of the park off I 10 to Cottonwood. Up through the park and out through the town of Joshua Tree. You can then loop back down Hwy 62 and slab it on I 10 or take the back road, Dillon Road, through Desert Hot springs to the Coachella area. Then head back South to the campground. Just another ride to add to the list. You can also use this route to head up to Big Bear for those who want to get a long ride in.
Sorry I will not be able to make it, as that is the busy time of year for us in the park. I will not be able to get the time off. Have fun, and If I see a pack of ST's in the park, I will make sure I turn on my red and blue lights.:policeST:

OK, I accept the position. Fred has appointed me as Hostess. I have the reservation confirmation in my hand. You can check in at my site as early as 14:00 hrs on Thursday Oct 25. Fred's Site can be occupied after 14:00 hrs on Friday Oct 26. I reserved my Site For one extra Day and a Day Earlier for those of us whom have Friday OFF. I will come down after work on Thursday Evening and probably arrive in the WHEEEEEEE Hrs of the morning. I personally like to ride at NIGHT. That will give me Friday and Saturday at the Campground and Sunday to travel Back. The Trip down from Fresno should be about 5.5 Hrs. If I leave work @ 20:00 hrs I'll be fine. The sites will be given to us when we arrive. I'll be there early Friday Morning so I will Sweet Talk the ranger into Three Nice Sites together. The "Headquarter Sites" are for RV's ONLY so I will be at the "New Camp Sites" and they have everything we need for Tent Camping!
My Reservations will be under.

I'll be heading out there Friday morning, and get this guys (and gals), I'll leave Veronica home! What!? You're kidding!? Nope! That's my decision! No ST! Pinch me! I must be dreaming! What would a STOC be without Veronica!? Well a lot more comfy for one and a vehicle carrying goodies and available if needed.
Think of it! I, or someone, can use it to run into town and get more ICE, more WOOD, more BEER, more GRUB! Whatever. Even run someone to the emergency for a boo-boo. Whatever! Shuttle folks out to Mexican Restaurants in Niland, etc, etc, etc...

GOOD NEWS!
I just got off the phone with the main ranger dude at the campgrounds. His name is Gary. I told him about the camping event and asked him the questions we were all wondering about... Tents per site and bikes per site.
Tents are cool! He said we could have up to eight tents per site. A tent per person.
Bikes: He will allow up to eight bikes per site parking as long as they can fit in there. There is also ample parking at the Vistor Center just a short walk away from the campsites that can handle any overflow if needed.
So IT IS A GO! All taken care of! WE ARE IN!
Gary wanted me to fax him a event interary so that he can tell his people that we will be showing up. I assured him that we are a very benign motorcycle group and pose no problems. So don't make me out to be a liar and burn and rape and pillage the other campers! LOL.
They also sell firewood there and I'll put in a special request that they have enough for the ones in our group who wish to purchase some.
NOW I'M GETTING EXCITED! It is official! Rangers been notified and "warned". We are expected! He also said they will put us all in sites next to one another. Cool!
Alicia: I told the ranger you'll be showing up first, so when you do let them know who you are and representing and they will take care of you.

Yeah. I use a commerical deodorant, interestingly enough, commerically:) I buy it at a Janitor supply store...just ask them. I use it in carpet cleaning, mostly. Is about $10.00 per quart, I use it at about 4 oz per 2000 square feet of carpet, so a very small squirt oughta fix it...I could bring a little to the Campout..

Thanks for your invite! If I come, I will definitely stay ( camp- I like camping) and I want to ride whatever twisty paved roads there. P.S. I am looking for a good dual sport to ride to Copper Canyon. I will be in LA Sept 13-20th looking for a bike. anyone who lives in LA area who can advise me any fun riding near there? From LA, I head toward Bisbee AZ, then meeting friendsatTexas/Mexico borderfor the HU rally. Any advice on things I shouldn't miss are welcome. I did this same ride 2 yrs ago and enjoyed the Tecate area and Patagonia to Bisbee ride. Then I rode the "666" (191)north to Salt Lake, but had to get back on Interstate due to snow.
A suggestion for you re # of campsites and etc. Instead of you paying for it and offering "free" to first 16 campers, which is very kind of you-why not book another site or 2 and then every tent chips in $10. Any excess can buy ice or beer or...? that way you are not out $$ and there is plenty of room. altho if this park is usually empty in Oct. then this is moot. We just did this at the BEARSTOC- each tent paid $10. and we had 2 tents per site. Then you don't have to listen to each other snore..... :>) Any of you going to the SierraSTOC? I might even try to get to that one, too. In Montana we don't have many rallies. all best. I wasn't worried about being the only female-- i just wondered if any female riders?
Chris will be there on her ST1300 so there will be at least 3 lady riders there...
Let me know when you're riding through AZ and your route.
If you can ride 89 from Yarnell to Jerome you'll see some pretty roads.
Ride through Sedona and you'll see a pretty area.
Hwy 60 from Globe to Showlow is nice too.

STOC site - there is no official STOC site that I'm aware of however, st1100.org is the site where you can register your STOC number so if any site comes close to being the official STOC site I would say it's that one.
ST-Owners Club site - I don't know what site you're referring to here.
ST LiST - This was an email list group that Don Feyma recently converted over to a forum format like this site.
This Site - ST-Owners.com - This site is merely for ST Owners, those that have, have had or want a Honda ST1100 or ST1300.. or their friends.
Hope that helps.

Well, on my way back from Cali (Willow Springs Track Day, an education seminar, and teaching with Lee for a Total Control class), I took a little detour by the Salton Sea. Absolutely gorgeous (hot, but gorgeous). Grabbed a date shake at the Oasis Date Gardens on the way down Hwy 111 and then rode through the Salton Sea State Park and checked out the camping facilities (very nice and plenty of shade).
Sure wish I could be there for the camp-out but my sweetie is doing a triathlon that weekend so the support crew (me) needs to be supportive ('cause heaven knows I get plenty of support for my MC obsession).
Have fun everyone!

THANK YOU ALICIA! The Hostess with the Mostess! Now we got this place sown up! :hotpepper :clap2:
I'll be heading out there Friday morning, and get this guys (and gals), I'll leave Veronica home! What!? You're kidding!? Nope! I think it would be best to bring my Rodeo with ice chests full of drinks, fruit and best of all! ICE! I can set up a bigger tent and maybe even offer breakfast to those who want and need it! Yep!
So ST1300 Alicia will be the ST HoSTess and I'll be the Cage Who Cares! LOL... :crackup
Rent or borrow a trailer and bring your bike. I have rented u haul trailers in the past so I can have my motorcycle with me when I go camping with my wife. Maybe you should give a shout out to the group and see if anyone needs a suport vehicle, personally I don't need one thats why I'm moto camping in the first place, plus Joe has his wing, which will hold about as much as a ridgeline.

I've never put a ST1300 in a trailer (or back of a pickup); but, I moved a Moto Guzi for my brother in law recently.

Been through box canyon a few times. It's an all paved, very fun road through the mud hills with a few challenging corners thrown in for a little excitement. Last time I tried to go through there was to bag some boni points while riding the "Spank Rally" & the road was closed  .. but that was in Nov 2005. Bet she's up & running by now.
PS: Spell check wants to change SeaSToc to "SPASTIC"....lol...

Box Canyon is paved and can be twisty in spots. I have seen occaisionally sand and gravel drift over the road from winter rain runoff, but I would feel confidant that shouldn't be the case around this time of year. It is a one laner and riding it in the dark would be a challange. Be careful and cautious. It will end out at Mecca.
I could be mistaken but I believe the area was used in the movie Torque (at the beginning of the antagonist conflict).
Torque:
You mean where the street bikes miraculously were able to handle off road conditions? :D
I thought that was near Dateland in AZ... I'll bet both areas look the same... dust/sand canyons/sand/sun... repeat.

No, near the beginning of the film. You know where the "good guys" run into the black guys biker gang. One of them is snoozing on his bike and the "good guys" zoom by and make him fall off and the chase and insueing conflict starts. If you look carefully there is also a big rig truck that goes by; it is the truck from the Speilberg's first film with Dennis Weaver. I can't remember the name of it now...

Mark's right. It can breezy more often than not in the desert. A tent would definitly be the right thing to bring; just for your (mine) own sanity.
I was looking to see if I could find some video footage of some of my trips to this desert area and this is the closest I could get. It is a short video I made for my wife's parents while we were camping in Ashley Flats. A area near Blythe, but not too far from the Salton Sea. Filmed in Nov. Should give a idea of what to expect...

There are no planned rides. You guys can decided on your own where and when you want to go. There are a lot of things to see and ride too. I have post a few of them in the event's sub-forum "Things To Do". Also check out the "Event Announcement" sub-forum for any activity.
Bootie: I may be taking my Rodeo SUV out there instead of the bike so I can carry some campgear for my wife and myself and to have a vehicle present if needed. But then again I've been known to change my mind at the last moment, so it's hard to say. Just follow out Route 76 to Henshaw Lake, hang a left and then a right, then a left again on Route 22 to Borrego Springs and out through the park to the Sea, around that to Mecca and come on in to the camp. Bring a sleeping bag! Looking forward to meeting ya! Us ol' sea salts got to stick together! LOL.

Dan is right! The desert can be very deceiving! During the day it can get quite warm and then plunge into artic cold during the evening. Spreads of 40 to 50 degrees differences are not unknown! But don't let that worry you. Bring proper clothing for both extremes and your tent will provide just on its own a 10 to 15 degree increase inside. A proper sleeping bag will also allow for comfortable sleeping nights. What I always had trouble with is getting up in the morning to go outside to start coffee... and that pee I always seem to have to do around 2am! Brrrrrr... LOL.

It seems this is the norm for California parks along the beach too... :D

I just got some bad news! ST1300 Alicia has been in a bad bike accident. She sustained two broken legs and her bike is totaled! I don't have any details yet. I will be calling her tomorrow. Obviously she will not be attending the event. She did say her reserved campsite is ours to use though. This is very bad news to me! I was so looking forward to spending some time with her and having her be the Camp Hostess. I will be at the campground on Friday morning the earliest I can get there. Probably around 10-11am to greet the early arrivals. If any of you show up before me just tell the rangers that you are with the ST camping group. Use my name (Fred Adams) and/or Alicia's. I will also have some cards for Alicia, Mac's wife Gail, George and his family for you guys to sign.
Keep our less fortunate fellow members and their families in your good thoughts and prayers, and be CAREFUL OUT THERE!!!

Hi my name is Arthur, I am Alicia's friend/coworker and I am posting this for her. I am on the phone with her right now and she want's you guys to know that she is O.K.. She want's to let you guys know that the punk that hit her was drunk driving, being chased by the cops for 40 minutes and had 4 hit and run accidents along the way, 1 of them being 2 pedestrians crossing the street. He hit Alicia and then he and his 2 other drunk buddies got out of the truck they stole from his mother, and took off running. Bubbah grabbed him and faced planted him in the center divider and held him till the cops got there. His other 2 buddies were caught when the manager of the local Applebees saw all the camotion and called the cops stating the 2 suspects were in his restaurant. There are 8 felonies pending against the driver and he's going to prison for along time. She want's Joe Norris (MELLOW) to know that she would like him to please start a thread to keep people updated and pray for her, she would greatly appreciate it.

Well Fred I told you I was going to make it unless something came up. Today a couple of things came up so I won't have Friday off and Saturday I have another matter that needs my attention. So, I won't be there after all. :(
Bummer Byron...
But there will be a next time...

I hear ya! I'm keeping a close eye on things. The fires, if still going by then, should not be a problem out at the Salton Sea; nothing to burn! LOL. But routes may have to be adjusted. Hope not. It's so easy to just bam out the 76 and hop over the mountains and through Borrego. We'll see!

Hi all,
Being unemployed at this time and if I get things together and done here at home (not for sure) I might head out Thursday for an extra day of camping.
There is a full moon on Thursday and the desert is a GREAT place to watch and enjoy it.
Is anyone else going out early on Thursday?

Hey ya Keith! That would be great! ST1300 Alicia being the Camp Hostess, before she had her accident, had reserved a campsite for Thrusday to Sunday which is one of the FREE three campsites devoted to the event's participants use. So it should be available to you if you show on Thursday! Lucky you! In fact that would be great if you could Keith! If you do, I designate you as the new CAMP HOSTESS!, I mean CAMP HOST! Yep! Wear your badge proudly my friend! Go to the campground and tell the rangers you are part of the event (STOC/ST-Owners/SeaSTOC/Fred Adams) and that a campsite had been reserved and paid for for Thursday night (besides the other days). Tell them it is under that name of Alicia Brown-Docken and they'll let you in! It is in the campsites called "New Camp". And then when other folks start showing up, maybe Thursday too, early Friday you can be the gal, I mean dude, who shows-them-the-way! Let me know if this will fit your plans. THANKS! :hotpepper :clap2:

I'm thinking with all thats going on in southern ca I might not want to ride through all the fire areas to get through to the Salton sea. Looks like the wind will switch today and blow on shore blowing the smoke from OC and Lake Arrowhead so. east to the Cochilla Valley. Plus with some 500,000 people evacuated, if the fires are over they will be trying to make their way back home. On top of that there will be lots of people on the road trying to get a look at the distruction. So unless there is a radical change in conditions I'm out.
For us its a 3 hour ride home if conditions are *really* bad...
We'll be there.

Good for you Mark! Looks like it will be be you, Bob and me! Pass the mustard! LOL! Just kidding! I know a lot of folks will still attempt to come out! Keep your fingers crossed that most, if not all of this will be finished by at least Sat. Friday could be a busy day for travelers, but I suspect Sat. will be easier... At least that is what my optimism is telling me! Boy! Talk about bad timing! :D
Most evacuees are hanging out at the ballpark, and local centers like high schools, churches, malls, etc. When released, and they will be biting at the bit to go home soon, local San Diego county roads could be congested either tomorrow and Friday. There is still a large blaze going in the south around Jamal. That is affecting Interstate 8. It's only Weds. I'm watching the news about it, since that's all what is on TV down here, a lot of the fires are coming under control. The Santa Ana winds have died down. Humidity is rising and temps. are dropping. There is small fire going on right now on the Marine base Camp Pendleton that jumped the Interstate 5 early this morning and they have closed the north-bound side, but it should be open soon this day.
Winds in the desert are typically North-West blowers and National Weather Service (http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/forecast/MapClick.php?site=sgx&smap=1&textField1=33.57167&textField2=-116.07639)(NOAA) is predicting wind speeds out there in the 5-10 mph range for the event dates. Breezy, but not mind-numbing dust blowers thank goodness. I don't think smoke will effect the Salton Sea area from what I have been seeing on the satellite photos. Of course if your ride takes you through burnt areas that is not pretty, but passable. The decision is up to you of course.
Listen, if this crisis flares up again and gets out of hand I will issue a BLOW-OUT announcment. I don't foresee it though. Keep checking the event's sub-forum "Event Announcements" for updates. I'm staying on top of this and will make a judgement. So far...
I'M STILL GOING!

Lately i've been using: www.weatherunderground.com when I need to know up to the minute weather. Has worked out very good for me prior to weekend camping trips. Punch in the address, zip code, or airport code and you've got up to the minute weather. The zip code for North Shore is 92254. Weather is looking really good for this weekends camping with temps in the low 90's / high 80's with 6 mph winds.
And just the fact that we have a full moon on Thursday is a big +. Chances are you won't even need a flashlight.:D
