Helmets Terminal Nose Tickle!

I bought an RF1000 earlier this year. I love almost everything about it; great fit and ventilation, comfortable. The problem is IT MAKES THE END OF MY NOSE TICKLE! At highway speeds (80ish) my nose starts to tickle. Some days I won't feel anything for 50 miles, then all of a sudden it's like the vibration of the wind and the bike hit the exact resonant frequency of my oversized schnoz. Not just a little tickle mind you, but a rip your helmet off and scar your face sort of tickle. Vent position doesn't seem to matter. With shield up the wind prevents it from happening, but that's no solution. Happens with or without breathguard. Also happens on my oldwing, so no blaming the ST. No problem with 2 previous AGVs. Was considering sticking earplugs up my nose? Anyone else have this issue? Any creative ideas besides dumping my helmet?

Go ahead with the big nose jokes. I'm ready!

LOL, I thought I was the only person ever to experience this problem. My old Arthur Fulmer did that to me way back when. I got rid of the problem by modifying (cutting most of it off!) the rubber along the bottom of the chin bar. This did make the helmet noisier, however, and it was noisy to begin with.

I put the chin net (not sure that's what it's called) on my Shoei X-11 and haven't had the problem since. When I rode my HD with open face helmets it would drive me nuts, I'm thinking it's the wind round your face.

I don't know what the solution is but my RF1000 does the same thing to me! I think it has something to do with the way air is directed from the vents or some such. Some days it nearly drives me crazy!

Unbelievable!:o4: Are you guys serious? A helmet can do that? Good thing my dad doesn't ride. His nose is so big he was born with 2 hearts. One for his body and the other for his nose! I just hope I never have that problem. My sinuses drive me crazy as it is!!!

Ah,,, Is that a Large RF1000 with blue graphics??? I think you should dump that helmet quick... (I'll take if off your hands for postage..). It's downright dangerous for you. You could be trying to merge into traffic when the next "attack" happens and with all the distractions trying to flip up the shield and scratch like crazy you might end up someone's hood ornament!

Just trying to watch out for you.... I care.... No really!!!! :>)

Thanks for the info guys. Glad to hear it's not just me. I don't think it's wind. Dead calm inside helmet and does it with vents in any position. Trie trimming nose hair-no luck. Hal, It's a large, but it's white. I do appreciate your concern though!

How about a nose job? If I change the mass of my nose the resonant freq will change right? I think I'll try a breathe right first though.

You know, this happens to me all the time and I never thought it was my helmet, just thought it was all in my head.

If you find a solution let me know. :)

That happened to me too... turns out my helmet had picked up (and held) a stray hair (from where I don't have a clue - wasn't one of mine)... Anyway, the wind was making it brush against my nose under certain conditions (never did figure out what the exact conditions were)... but the symptoms were the same... rip the helmet off and run my nose along the asphalt at ST nominal... :22yikes:

Yup mine too.... just trim your nose hair before you ride and you won't have that problem.... :)

<D>

That didn't work for me. Also tried trimming my mustache way back and that didn't make any difference either. The tickle seems to be on the outside of my nose anyway, like a very fine hair or fiber is touching it. If I close the lower chin bar vent, that seems to help but I don't like the stuffy air that results.

I presume that there is nothing crawling around inside the helmet??

Seriously, I put my helmet on the ground once (just like I learned in MSF) and then put it back on my head only to find some ants heading down the visor.

Very disconcerting.

Most likely, its from airflow. Have you tried it with the chin vent closed?

I've also found from time to time that you get some static charge in the visor that makes dust stick to it. I would presume that it might be felt across your face.

Static charge....Hmm that's an interesting thought. And because my schnoz is closer to visor than most..... That would explain the there-or-not nature of the tickle. If vibration I would think it would start immediately and remain, but not the case. I think I'll try a big old braided ground strap from my nose to the - terminal of battery!
