OK, so what's with that ? ... most motorcyclists would do anything to avoid the dreaded Interstates, but I've ridden some which qualify as great roads. Here are some of my nominations for great 'I' roads.
- I90 from Spokane, WA to Missoula, MT ... great mountain passes, vistas.
- I5 from Roseburg, OR to Redding, CA ... awesome views of Mt. Shasta and a great place to test, uh, ST performance ... :D :D :D
yours ? ...
I like interstates! I live in Michigan and head west each summer to the Rockies for fun riding and to visit my kids. The interstates allow me to get across the boring midwest and plains states in the fastest way. Once you get away from the major metropolitan areas the traffic flows fast, usually around 85 MPH indicated on the slightly inaccurate speedo :) . I've taken I-80, I-70 and I-40 back and forth and the one I would try to avoid is I-70. Last year I came back on I-40 and posted something bad about Texas and Mellow got all pissey about it, so I just have to remember to say nice things about Texas if I'm on I-40 :D . I-40 through Arkansas is a beautiful ride.

Two places I rode on interstates that are good roads are in Tennessee and West Virginia. Both of those places have lot of sweeping curves with multiple altitude changes

I have ridden from Cape Breton to Georgia and cannot remember an interstate I would not choose to avoid while on a motorcycle. I can't speak about interstates out west, but where I ride I only use them to get to the good roads.

I-84 from Ontario, Or to Pendleton, Or is a decent stretch of interstate. Lots of nice sweepers, scenery, mountains, and a couple of decent places to stop along the way. Also, I-84 in Oregon, where it curves along the Columbia River. Stops being nice when you get close to Portland, though.

I prefer secondary roads, but I91 from central Mass to northern Vermont is scenic and gets you there fast. Parts of I84 in New York and Penn are Ok if the traffic is light.

Interstates have a purpose and thats to get me where I have to go. With short vacation time I take the freeway and then take secondary roads for the "real" riding. I haven't found a freeway yet that I can just enjoy and not leave my throttlemeister engaged.
Alan, I find I-40 to be boring from Memphis to Little Rock. Do you mean I-30 from Little Rock to Texarkana or I-40 from Little Rock to OK? Both of these are senic.

Horst, if you're talking about "Cabbage Hill" to the east of Pendleton, yeah, you're right. Lots of fun for an interstate highway. Actually, it's not bad at all, all the way into LaGrande. Gotta watch out for the Oregon State Police. They LOVE to patrol for speeders up on top of the Blues and I've never been that way that I haven't seen at least 2 troopers up there patrolling, and with at least one of them having someone pulled over to issue a "High speed driving achievement award."

Ha ... the only ticket I ever got in the U.S. of A. was in Oregon. But I fought the law and I won ! ... so my record is clean ... :p:

Didn't they write a C&W song about that back in the 60's?

yours ? ...I totally agree with you about I-90 from Spokane east, but why quit at Missoula. I-90 through Butte is awesome. It has high speed twisties (lots of up and down too) with plenty of room to get around the coffins
