This is a repeat from the GPS forum location cause this guy does other things besides Ram Mounts
My local Bike shop gave me one of these to try and I like it. It is machined from billet aluminum and uses the front gas tank bolt down for a mounting location. It is tall enough for use with or without risers. I used it to mount my GPS a Garmin 2730 with a tour tech mount and a short RAM arm. I did dip the ball in liquid electrical tape and the maker may do that in response to my feedback. I also used the mast as a tankbag anchor with a short strap and a small caribiner. Both worked great and the gps is now always oriented toward me.

Ram uses a rubber ball because it is a vibration isolation device. For the sake of the electronics that would be a better product if they simply wacked their ball off and made a threaded boss for a Ram Ball.

Until that point the MCL center piece will stay the better product.

Um, just one other thought.

I don't think I want a solid piece of metal pointing straight up at me if I happen to be involved in an accident that shoves me towards it....

I do tend to over think design, but hey some folks pay me for it.

That looks really nice and resolves the problem of things moving around typical of RAM mounts.

There is a problem I would have with it as I had with RAM mounts on the clutch/brake clamp. It gets in the way of maintenance. I find it a PITA having to remove my farkles to perform maintenace.

Too many farkles ? Isn't getting lost , half of the adventure ?

Rob the rest of the ram system would still be there, the arm and the device ball mount too. So the vibration is still attenuated but of course to a lesser degree. How much rubber is there on a Ram ball?
As for the sticking at you thing. You are over thinking this one a litte in my humble opinion. It is actually only 1" higher than a ram ball on a riser plate and I did suggest it could be about 1" shorter. This ball is lower than the gas tank and i cannot imagine the kind of crash that would present any danger of impailment. In fact there are a lot more hazards on the bars.
NM6R: you would find that the mount of this one actually mounts over the gas tank bolts and replaces the hex head bolts with allen socket bolts. When taking this mount off you are also unscrewing the front of the tank so it is a wash for maintenance with the added convenience of having a big ball to hang onto as you take the screws out to lift the tank.
Since I give such lousy reviews of things I thought answering you queries might help.
I am not associated with the manufacturer but i did recieve one in exchange for my feedback which amounted to adding a rubber coating and making it about 1"shorter.

Hey, I did say I could be over thinking it. ;)

The RAM balls (and I don't work for them) have about 1/2-inch of rubber. They are a stud with rubber...

The reason for 2 balls is that with 2 you isolate sympathetic vibration and with 1 you only accentuate the problem. Rubber coating it will not be enough to really be the same. Now on the ST it may not be a big deal.

I think they have a good product and I think shorter is better and putting a RAM ball or a copy of such would make it sell at at least double the rate.

Blue bye you

If you have a motorcycle larry bar riser you have a ball mount on the cover plate. that puts it in almost the same place.

That is true. this ram mount is only 1 1/2" closer but it does not turn with the bars. For anyone that uses Gen Mars or does not use a riser this is a great option. I have a Heli riser with the added ball but have come to prefer this new offering. Your actual experience may vary.

I will offer the ram ball option to the machinist. Maybe a 3 piece offering with a couple of mast lengths. Right now it is 2 piece, a base plus a mast/ball

All this feed back is terrific.

I was looking at my bike today. There is no room for something like this with my MCL riser plate. The ball mount would hit the bars.

My point is I don't like having to mess at all with something I have added. Even though it's still two machine screws to lift the tank, I would have the burden of finding somewhere to put my GPS for example. This wouldn't be a bother to many as they have already created a maintenance nightmare.

As i said I have Heli risers just like MCL, and have one on my bike, The Gps or the mount never came close to the bars. Lots of room lock to lock. I did make sure I could before I left my garage.
