Stebbel Horn:
I installed a new 139 db. Stebbel horn just 8 short days ago. It's great and really grabs attention. However, yesterday, the horn stopped working. I checked all connections and fuses, and found that the relay sent with the horn had failed. I suggest that if you install this horn, you spend the $5.95 to replace the Stebbel relay with a heavy duty unit. Removing the fairing twice within about one week was a fair bit of effort. Save yourself the aggravation and go heavy duty.

Thanks for the sage advice Phil! I just ordered a Stebbel horn for my ST and had heard that there were issues in the past about the relay. I thought by now they had resolved the problem .... obviously not. I'll pick up a heavy duty, weatherproof relay for the install. Old Vic :06biker:

Thanks for the heads up Phil, I just answered your email and I'll move this to the horns / mirrors sub-fourm.

If you have relayed your fuse block, couldn't you just connect it up without a relay? Don't everyone pound me at once. I'm just getting into this electron flow stuff.

Only if you want the horn on constantly while the bike is running. Although now that I think about it, that might not be a bad thing in some locales. :D
The relay being discussed is a different relay that only engages when the horn button is pressed. The stock horn wiring won't carry enough current to make a louder horn work effectively. A lot of us use the existing horn wiring to operate a relay that turns on when the horn button is pressed and switches on power to the horns from beefier wiring run directly to the battery or an auxiliary fuse block.

The Stebel relay seems to be problematic.

I have heard that you do NOT want to run the Stebel horn off the OEM horn without a relay inline, as it will burn the OEM switch out.

My advice save yourself a ton of aggravation and spend a little more and order a pre-made wiring kit from Eastern Beaver. I did and the install was easy, quick and trouble free.

I used the relay that came with the horn. I waterproofed it with silicone before installation, three months and I haven't had any problems with it. And I would say that I have driven through a fair amount of rain too.

My 2 Cents worth,
I used the horn wiring harness from Eager Beaver. Very nice looking harness, fit well, good instructions.
I would recommend it!
OOPS ! I really mean Easter Beaver
Third recommendation for the Eastern Beaver harness. I had him modify it slightly with an additional set of female spade sockets at the OEM horn end so I could leave the OEM horn in place and just tap off the circuit. I've had airhorns die 200 miles from home and prefer to keep the OEM horn in operation just in case.
By the time I'd have assembled the parts to build my own harness and taken the time to do the wiring, the cost of the Eastern Beaver harness was so much less it made no sense not to just get it premade. Fantastic workmanship; I do my own wrenching and electricals and am pretty an*l about such stuff -- Eastern Beaver did a fantastic job, I wouldn't have done anything different.

Definately waterproof the relay as it will get moisture inside and corrode if you dont. I just replaced the relay for that very reason last week due to the horn quitting. The old relay was full of rust which was surprising since it was mounted behind the tupperware where the original horn was located. Used lots of silicone this time.

I would like to get the Stebel Horn and the Eastern Beaver wiring harness and relay.Where can I find the vendors for each respectively.Today for the third time in 3 weeks a cager in the right lane hasn't seen me and tried taking my lane and space away. All 3 times my OEM horn has failed to jolt the cagers to their errors. So I have had it with the OEM horn...while I realize its wise to stay out of ppl's blind spot this is not always possible...although I do try:eek:

You have to order online the harness from Jim at Eastern Beaver in Japan. Here's his link... Also the horn can be ordered from a varity of online bike stores, Calsport being one of the favs around here.

And here's a link for someone's site that shows how to install it. Eastern Beaver also has a good article on his harness installation of course.

I installed a Stebel horn last August. It was installed professionally, according to the included instructions. Yesterday, the horn stopped working. Its malfunction began by sounding intermittedly without being switched - then it stopped working. I checked all wiring and replaced the relay twice - still - no horn. I checked and rechecked everything, including the fuse, battery connection and switch. Everything but the horn works. Any ideas?

Sounded intermittanlty without pressing the horn button?
That doesn't sound like the horn going south.
Or intermittantly as in it sometimes worked when you pushed the horn button?

I've heard about a lot of Stebel relay problems. It's pretty obvious that they are the cheapest piece of crap relay they could find.
I know of one that rattled. When he opened it up, there was a huge chunk of loose excess solder rattling around in there. That could have made for some interesting non-intentional blasts.
I used the relay they provided but I took it apart first and it looked okay. Then I fully sealed it with silicon before installation. It's about a year old now and has performed flawlessly.
I haven't heard of any problems with their crappy relays if they are properly sealed before installation. Even so, if I had known the extent of the problems reported, I would have picked up a different relay at my local auto parts store (or buy on-line). I stopped in at CarQuest and they wanted $22 for a 30 amp relay. LOL, that's a $5 part.
