Planning on putting 55/60's on the ST and wondered if the H4 was what I need?

H4 is what you need but you'll need shims to do it.
Here's a link to the tutorial I did on fitting H4 bulbs on the ST. The tabs are slightly different but you can get some shims to make them fit. The references are in my article.

Two questions:
1. How much brighter are the Halogens compared to stock and has anyone done this?
2. Do shims come with them or have to buy a special kit?

Calsport touring has both bulbs and shims. It's a nice improvement and worth the money but don't expect anything dramatic. It gets you out of buying Honda's proprietary bulbs.
Reality check!! Getting the bulbs in is a real bear. If anyone finds an easy way let me know. They go in quickly for some people but I think it took me a couple of hours. Good luck and don't get frustrated it'll only cost you more time. :03biker:

Great tutorial Kurt. It's real easy if your bike is already stripped down. If yours happens to be opened up take the opportunity and put in the bulbs.

I have a suggestion for your tutorial. While your shims were snug enough to hold to the H4 bulbs via friction, mine were quite loose. So I used the forward facing tiny tabs, bending them outboard enough with needle nose pliers to hold the shim in place.

Agree on all fronts. The factory originals suck so much just about any swap out is an improvement, but this one won't light up the skies. I tried half dozen times to just reach in (topside or from below) only to get frustrated. Finally queued up enough projects so I invested the time to strip down the plastic. Once you can more clearly see what's going on, it's all pretty straight forward. Having gone through this, I now think I can do the next replacement without this extra steps, but Honda didn't make what should be a simple chore easy.

HI y'all and greetings from Down Under.
Please excuse my first post! ( proper introduction to come )
www.powerbulbs.co.uk for Osram Silver Stars at only GBP16 a pair including free shipping and they shipped mine within an hour of receiving my order!
As far as HID look bulbs go - the optimum kelvin rating is anything up to but not more than 5200K as this is the same Kelvin rating as the sun - any higher will actually produce less lumens not more.
Cheers

Gidday Steve
It's real alright! :D
That's me and Ron up above Akaroa Harbour just out of Christchurch on Banks Peninsula - Akaroa is the Sunday am java run for my mates and I....terrible chore but someone's gotta take one for the team right? :D
How about you come and do one of the tours and I'll show you it personally?
Cheers
Shane
No shims needed. Put in SilverStars, just snipped off offending tabs on lamp. Lamp fits nice and tight, beam pattern is fine, and the high beams rock!

Shaggy,
(As you know) You are from a gorgeous area. I spent 3 months in NZ with a friend. We spent quite a bit of time in Christchurch and house-sat for some folks in Diamond Harbor. Goodonya. :03biker:

The shims *may* be needed otherwise the bulb goes in crooked, mine did. So got the Calsport shims and all is well.
Also, when I did this the 2nd time (!) I just removed the lower plastic 'lip' and did all my work by feel. it can be easily done ... patience ... concentration ... just pretend you're a Jedi knight :)
Results are amazing ... std H4's 60/55W are a great improvement ! ;)
Just finished the H4 upgrade with the Phillips Vision Plus bulbs and shims from CST. Lights are nice and bright.
Lots of good info on this thread, but let me tell ya, those bail/clips were engineered by Satan, 'nuff said.
Warmest regards
Jeff

Okay what is the difference with h4 or h7? I guess it takes h7 standard, and have to use the shims with h4. Is there something better with h4s?

Standard bulbs for the bike are Honda proprietary.
H4 bulbs (dual filament) will fit with modification to the alignment tabs, and possibly shims
H7 bulbs (one filament) are designed for quad bulb systems and I believe should not be used in the ST

I have been researching the headlight issue for the last couple of days. The best info I could find was from Daniel Stern Lighting. www.danielsternlighting.com His web site is unusual in that you can not pick a product and purchase it with the click of a mouse. He has an old fashioned approach to sales, You e-mail a request for the product, what ever it is. If you have questions as I did, he will corrosponded via e-mail with you as he did with me for the last two day's about the type of bulb and type of modifications to make to accept the H4 bulbs. He recomended a higher wattage bulb. Osram 70/65. I didn't know this bulb exsisted, from reading posts on this and other forum's the highest watt bulbs metioned were the 55/60's. Also sent to me this link expalaining how to modify the headlight assembly to accept the H4s. check it out "http://dastern.torque.net/Mods/H4mod.html" What the article did not mention was how critical the alignment of the fillament is with respect to the reflector, to get a correct beam pattern. something the available shims only sometimes do. I will be making the these mod's and using the 70/65 bulb and will post the results after I give the new bulb's a few night rides. Thanks to everyone on this board who participates, it's great help and an eduction. Withou this board I would never attempt to make most of the changes or add farkels to my new toy. I'd have to go to the inconvenience and expense of taking it back to the dealer, who no doubt is not competent enough to perform the work in the first place. Not that I think Im super mec. but I can read instructions and follow them.
