Has anyone experience of doing valve clearance check and adjustment on the St1300 themselves? This involves removing the timing chain and overhead camshafts, and shimming the valve cups as necessary to bring valve clearances into tolerance. Do you know what charge to expect for a set of valve shims, say 2 of each size? Are any other replacement parts required, e.g. new valve cover gaskets, or are the old ones OK to reuse if you are careful?

If anyone has had this work done at a dealer, what was the time and cost billed to you?

Many thanks,
Rob

I plan on checking mine this weekend. I ordered new gaskets but have heard others say they re used the old ones and they worked out just fine.

So far it sounds like everyone has been in spec so you shouldn't have to remove the cams and get into that mess. You only need to remove the cams and cam chain etc... if you plan on shimming some of the valves if they are out of tolerance. :tools1:

Here's a link to the Knowledge Base area where the shim kit video download is. It's using an ST1100 however, the basic procedure should be the same.
