DesertSTOC 2
President's Day weekend, February 15th-18th
Deming, New Mexico
Plan on going to the Arroyo Seco Track on Saturday. It's small and friendly so a good first track-day experience for those who've not done one.
Hotel is the Deming Motel
Campground is Rock Hound State Park (http://www.st-owners.com/forums/showthread.php?t=33567)
EDIT:
Please go to the following link and participate in the trackday poll. Thanks!

Sounds fun. I'll have to see if I get that off. If so, I'd love to test the cold weather camping gear.... Glad I purchased that 0F down mummy. :)
<D>
We go visit in the Mojave then...
Just let me know how the roads are! :)

A little added incentive to come to DesertSTOC ......
Arroyo Seco Racetrack (http://www.asmaracing.com/) is nearby (within an hour) and I'm checking on renting the track for one (or two, if there's interest) of the DesertSTOC days.....

Initially I'd suggested Silver City as the "central/central" (nice roads near by) but we could always set up in Demming instead (to be closer to the track).
What say ye?????

Track day sounds good to me. How many cones will it take to set up the obstacle course around there? :D

I only hope I don't have to dig out of the snow to get there as I did this year!!! And ride in negative temperatures on the way home.

For now, it's somewhere in Southern New Mexico sometime around President's Day weekend.

I'm checking on the track this coming week and should know something more by the end of the week (10/12).

Holy Crap, Mac, it was _cold_ in Tuscon! I'm gonna watch Papa's post to see what it's gonna be like in New Mexico (Silver City is fairly high up) before I decide how much to carry. I may need an RV site and a battery charger so I can keep my vest on over night. :D

We were somewhat cursed with atypical weather in Tucson for DesertSTOC.
I'm undecided on the upcoming DesertSTOC....
WeSTOC is also in New Mexico.
And I'm better acclimated to desert heat than riding in the cold.
And I've yet to get to a WeSTOC.
I think I'll try to do both. They're far enough apart I doubt it'll be a one-or-the-other situation.
I dunno, it's pretty cold there then:

Southwestern NM is quite different than Northeastern NM so you'll definitely need to do both! :D
As far as weather goes....it was actually WARMER in Silver City last February than it was in Tucson (weird!). Deming is usally in the mid-60's to low-70's for highs and mid-30's to low-40's for lows.

Gee... I want to go, but seeing how it would take, me anyway, two days to get there and two days back I'm sure I won't be able to take that much time off from work. Is southern N.M. desert?
Raven
10-13-2007, 10:38 AM
Yes, Southern NM is desert.
Deming is only 652 miles from Oceanside - you can make that in a day!

I gotta couple more SToc's this year before I worry about how cold NM is. I know from experience that the wind NEVER stops blowing in NM. Tucson was as cold as Big Bend was, but two nights instead of one. For those of you that don't know, 28 is chilly in any kind of sleeping bag and tent.

OK, I voted, but as I have said earlier, I may be weathered in up here and I don't have a pick-up to put the bike in!!!! My snow blower is only good for about 18" of the white stuff. But if I replace the Wing with a KLR, I could just ride through the white stuff!!!

I don't think the KLR will allow you to do the speeds your wing and ST allow... if you do the KLR make sure you allow *lots* more road time and break time!

I don't think the KLR would do as well on the track as the ST or Wing would either.

Yeah... the KLR out there with a bunch of STs.... You'd be eating dust all day! :)
Raven

With so much more ground clearance the KLR might just shame a few ST's on the track.....
Go for an XR650L! (Throw on a larger rear sprocket and a set of MEFO Explorers and it really rocks - I shocked a couple of sport bikes in the twisties last week - of course they smoked me in the straights.)

1) Not if there are any straight sections.
2) Not with tires that are meant for both on and off road.

You'd be amazed at what my little XR650L (Honda's KLR) can do in the twisties, especially with the MEFO tires on it. It out ran a VFR, SV650 and a Wee-Strom in the twisties and we were all shocked. I'd really been expecting them to be waiting on me and instead I was waiting on them.
:)
Like I said though, I got smoked in the straights.....

Folks we are still a long way from a KLR. I just kinda threw that out as a way to get through the snow.
Raven, the KLR has the biggest gas tank of the three Jap dual sports. That is my primary reason for opting for it instead of the other two. If I get one, it would only be for one purpose and as soon as I got home it would be up for sale. I want to see Yellowknife and go back to Inuvik. Yeah I made it to Inuvik on a Wing with a Bunkhouse, but I think I would be much more at ease riding a dual sport next time.

Don't know if the bunkhouse will fit behind a KLR... or the Uni-go either! :)

I solved that by getting a used XRL for pretty cheap that already had a 5.8 gallon Acerbis tank on it!

Raven, I would like to participate on track day but I'm afraid I will be over ruled by SWAMBO. I doubt seriously that Vicki is in the mood to sit and watch me play on the bike, so it is more likely that we will go exploring. The good news is that she fully intends to attend and has already given her boss the word that "she isn't working those days, no way, no how!" Hard to beat that!

Better safe than sorry but we're sure gonna miss seeing you!
The weather here was gorgeous this past weekend. Tucson had highs in the mid-70's and Deming had highs in the low-70's. This coming weekend's forecast is predicting a slight chance of rain on Thursday afternoon and evening with a cooling trend for Thursday and Friday. The rest of the weekend should be nice. Predicted highs in Deming for the weekend is mid to high 60's with lows in the low to mid 30's. So, a bit chilly but no colder than DesertSTOC last year.

Hey Nick, can't remember running 117 but one time and that was in June or July and can't tell ya what year that was either :nuts1: . There are some mtn's but alot of flat between. I'm not sure I'd do that Thursday from what they are forcasting, it's suppose to be pretty bad snow/rain w/wind mix down as far as here in Alb., rain Friday AM then moving east. But the again this is a "puter" based model forcast too! I'll try and let you know if things change down this way with an update as it becomes available.
