I have a question for you informed video specialiST's....I'm left with a bunch of beta vcr tapes from my step dad. We found these tucked away this last weekend in his ol' "pump house", which is an oversized storage area. These are almost all of the origanal Star Trek, quite a few Voyager ect.ect. my question is, is there a way without spending a ton of $ transfering these to at least regular size vcr tape. My mom, god love her, gave the beta machine away along with some other things to the university here so I have no way of veiwing these tapes to see if they are worth keeping. Appreciate any advice on this...

It's probably not worth the effort or expense of having them transferred. Both shows run daily in syndication on several cable channels and are available on DVD.

Put them on ebay.... ya never known who may really want them..... There are a lot of trekkers out there.

Scary... I was thinking the same thing after I posted..... :22yikes:
Maybe if you ask around, you can borrow a beta machine to check them out....

Man I don't know ANYBODY with a beta machine, that might be harder then ya think to find.
But now y'all got me curious as to what could ACTUALLY be on those tapes. I'd agree with the earlier posts, if its Star Trek stuff, ALL those episodes are readily available on DVD, so I wouldn't worry about it. If it turns out to be sumptin else, call us.
I'd bet, if it is Star Trek on Beta, there is someone out there that will pay real money for it! Just think... Originally recorded on Beta from the first showings... think how that would be to a Star Trek collector!
Now, if it's something Step Dad didn't want Mom to see... contact ME!!!:crackup Or if Mom used to be HOT and Step Dad was an amatuer film maker.....!:woo I am so bad.......
When we were going through Grandpa's stuff, we found a little viewer... NEVERMIND..... It sold for $75!!!

For the longest time, about the only place that has continued to use Beta has been News organizations. Beta always had better quality than VHS, and was stereo out of the box. Also, some schools (high schools/vocational schools) offer "electronic journalism" types of classes and may still have some of these players lying around.
If you know someone in either of these organizations, may be worth a call. Also, try your local library, as they sometimes have "old" technology that they use.
Here's a service that will transfer them for you: http://www.high-techproductions.com/betamax%20to%20dvd.htm
Here's a search of Betamax on ebay: http://electronics.search.ebay.com/betamax_DVD-Home-Theater_W0QQ_trksidZm37QQcatrefZC12QQfromZR40QQsac atZ32852
Have Fun with this one!

I'd be much more interested in the time machine that transported the Beta recorder from the late '70s to the late '60s to catch the original airings. :D

Believe it or not, I have a Beta machine. It was the first VCR I ever bought, a Radio Shack Hi-Fi. And, it works! I haven't plugged it in in years, but, the last time I did, it worked just fine. I have no idea why I still have it.

MovieSToc!!!
Or,,, maybe,,,
TrekSToc!!!
It might degrade down to,,,
PornSToc?!?!?:crackup :bigpop: :hyp1: :duck:  :D
I'm thinking Joe won't send the banner for PORNSToc:crackup:crackup:crackup
These must have been recorded after the original series. The original Betamax's came out in 1975 prototypes were around in 1971. JVC trumped them all by releasing VHS (Video Home System) to anyone in 1976.
My Mom used to have an original that she paid $1100.00 for in 1975....Yikes. It was a big rascal too.

My parents, well my dad because he won't throw anything away, still has a Sony Bata machine, along with everything else he ever bought.
