My wife thinks I have too many toys/hobbies. Is that even possible? What do you think? Here's the list:
1. Motorcycle (Honda ST 1300)- just one...not two or three
2. Jet Ski
3. Camper
4. I hunt so I guess she's counting my gun collection and time afield
5. I fish (a little)
6. Sports Car and I belong to a local car club with events much like the ST events we have
7. I make the tip-over bars on the side
8. ATV (four wheeler)
Now keep in mind that we do the camping thing together and sometimes the motorcycling thing together, depending on how long the trip is. She rides the ski but not that much.
I think that she just thinks I have a lot of hobbies because she doesn't really have any, unless you count shopping as a hobby. I just think this is the norm for most folks. Somehow she thinks it's a bit excessive though. We're both off during the summer months, and we're not strapped for cash as a result of the toys.
All women think their husbands have too many toys/hobbies.
Our only hope (now too late for you) is to hope they don't notice.
Obviously the last thing you added was *just a little to much*...
Did you claim fall 'hunting privileges' after going on a 9000 mile trip? :)
Was it the Jet Ski?
Or was it the ATV?

Can you afford the divorce if you sell all (except the ST) the toys??
Maybe it's time to get her a bike of her own (or a pool boy!)

Tell her that with all the toys, you can't afford a mistress... (OK, the guys seem to think it's funnier for some reason.)
Tell her one of the guns, a fishing pole, the jet ski AND the ATV are HERS! You are just there to show her how to use them... and you have to stay practiced so you can show her!
You're welcome!

I'm going to tell you exactly what your problem is.........you are not annoying enough. Stay around the house more and sing as much as you can stand. First thing you know, she'll be offering you money to go away and enjoy one of your toys. LOL!!

This might work for Coop... but, I have found Chris just says "let's ride"... since we have no bike-2-bike comm she doesn't (and neither do I!) have to listen! :)
Buy her a bike of her own and get a *really* good baby sitter (grand ma/pa works pretty good... well at least if it isn't someone like dond who lives over a 1000 miles away from the grandkids!!! :)

There is always a catch,,,,, sometimes it takes while to figure it out.... Here is how it is with me... I have all those toys and then quite a few more....but the kids (3), the house, the rental property are primarily my responsibility so guess what..... the toys don't get used very much now do they........
Thanks Dave

I know I have too many hobbies .... my list is twice as long and my wife quit complaining a long time ago.
I feel your pain - I need to trim back as time and energy are not at the same level they were 10 years ago.

I agree with SINK about showing her how to use things...except for the gun..it could be very detrimental to your health as you ride you bike down to the water to use the jet ski you just had her tow there in the new pickup truck ..with all your fishing gear in the bed of the truck.

Yeah, well I think my wife has too many toys, spends too much time on the golf course, and doesn't do her share of the housework. OK, I lied about the housework thing.

Since you're going into business for yourself, you can no longer claim #7 as a hobby, and may get away with not claiming #1. So, that takes you back down to 6 hobbies. Entirely acceptable.

I guess I'll be the party pooper and be serious. If all those toys and hobbies prevent you from saving a sufficient amount of money for retirement then YES you have too many toys. If not enjoy :)
My brother had lots of toys and fun and ended up retired without a pot to piss in. Now he can't afford to do much of anything while I'm having a ball.

Well...She doesn't have an interest in her own bike AT ALL. She just wants to ride with me on some of the shorter stuff and says she may ride longer once Kent gets older. She used to ride on long rides, but it is a bit harder for both of us to take long motorcycle trips these days. Kent loves the jet ski, so I suppose it could technically be his. :-) Good point about the bars and the bike sort of being work now. So, does this mean I could buy a Concours 1400 as long as I make something for it like crash protection? I might be stretching my luck there. We have a pretty good retirement plan both on our on and with the state. So, we're good to go there. I did let her shoot the pistol a while back because she wanted to learn to defend herself if someone broke in or something while I was away. We both decided that, in order to do that, she'd be best served using the shotgun. She hit's about like Clint Eastwood in the Unforgiven when he and Ned are out practicing. :crackup
Now, this singing theory might actually work. :D
I'd much rather refer to them as cultural artifacts. I applaude your efforts in acquiring such a collection of fine specimens! :bow1:

We are loaded up with toys....started a long time ago. Could I retire with more money by being more frugal? Hell yes, but the time with growing children cannot be replaced. My wife agreed with me on this & we have had a blast. Currently we have a 33' boat, a ski boat, 2 waverunners, 5 atv's, 4 dirt bikes, several street bikes, as well as about 45 vintage (smaller Hondas, many of which are future retirement projects). My wife & all three (older now) children participate in everything. Our typical vacations require large amounts of gasoline...LOL! Seriously though, you cannot put a price on the value of this time having fun with your family. We always have had our kids, as well as their friends with us on weekends, instead of our kids going to have fun at "so & so's" house. I wouldn't trade it for a better retirement. Besides, when I have no teeth, I probably won't be able to eat anything but mac n' cheese anyway.

Perhaps you have too many toys, but how many wives do you have? That seems a more relevant question. As long as it remains at one, there should no issue.

I think I will ask this question. Do all the toys really make one happy. Or have the toys become a chore that needs to have attention? Just somthing to ponder on. Ride fast, Ride far, Ride safe.

You just couldn't resist could you? LOL Well...I'd imagine "honey I bought a new motorcycle" would go over pretty smoothly after mentioning that you bought a new plane and then told her that you really didn't. That's one of those things that makes the second thing sound so much better than the first. :crackup
To answer your question Chuck:
All of my toys bring a source of happiness but that's mainly because my family and I use most of them together. If I were alone with all the toys, it wouldn't be as much fun. Although, if I had two houses, that might become more of a chore. I don't like keeping up one house, let alone two. Then again, if you can afford two houses, you can probably afford to pay people to do that for you. :crackup

In my Dreams maybe.
Then I will venture to say, it is not the toys that makes one happy. It is the people that one surrounds themselves with, when playing with the toys. Example: STOC events.http://209.144.27.3/forums/images/icons/icon7.gif So it is, people first, toys second, houses third. As it should be.

My bike wouldnt be near as much fun if I didnt have other friends who also enjoyed motorcycles.
That was a problem with my planes... I love flying but always did it alone. My wife didnt like it, most of my friends didnt fly, and most other 'airplane people' that I met were kinda snotty and I didnt care to hang around with them too much. So I got out of the planes because they just werent much fun by myself.

Local Kawi dealer has one of these that I've looked hard at. I don't know how practical it would be or how much I'd enjoy it. I do love to fly, but don't think I'll be buying a plane anytime soon.

Sue, I'll be your boy toy! I mean - your boy with toys... or something like that...
Bygdawg, I suspect that you missed something here in your original post... If your wife is anything like mine, she's counting each gun as a separate toy/hobby. I have R/C airplanes (only about 20-30 of them - I lose count; and then again, the ones in kit form or crashed needing repair don't really count, do they?) and yes, Monica counts each one as a separate toy. I told her I'll happily sell all of them and everything else (house, cars, motorcycle, computers, her Wizard of Oz collection, etc) and we can go to the mission field. :D When I got to the Wizard of Oz stuff, she shut up, though she agreed to it all after the kids are on their own...
Do the toys make us happy? Not really. My self-actualization has never been tied to things, but rather to the impact I can have on the world around me. Hopefully it's more of a positive impact than negative, but some days I wonder...

Well, at first I wasn't sure if you had any children, but you mentioned at least one, so here is my take;
Your gonna need all the hobbies you can have once the children are out of the house. Fist my eldest left, I played lots of hockey with him, he played hockey in college for awhile, I'd watch and wish I could play too. Then my eldest daughter left for college, I played lots of tennis with her, now my tennis racket is lost in the closet somewhere. My younger son went off to college last month, I plaed baseball with him A LOT, AND THREW THE BALL EVERY SINGLE DAY. WOW, was I ever lost the first night the third one was gone.
That night I went up stairs after supper, plopped down on the bed (my wife was reading by the desk) and I announced that I was BORED (I threw the ball with my son every night after supper). My wife offered to go out and let me throw the ball to her:bow1: The saving grace was on the weekends, my younger son came home every weekend for the first month to throw, and that he just made the team as a walk-on, and they are very impressed with him.
During the week I had been going NUTS, I decided that I needed more hobies, or needed to start riding more during the week, besides riding to work every day. So keep those hobies, enjoy them, you will need them to pass the time away when the kid(s) are out of the house, and/or your retired.

Good point. Our boy is just 2 now, so we've got a while before he's away at college. Then, if he's like me, he'll be home every weekend to wash clothes and get hot food. LOL Also, retirement is a bit away, at least another 20 years. In the meantime, I think we'll all continue to enjoy the toys. I think the wife's biggest complaint would be the fact that I have two vehicles that only two people can ride in or on at any given time, one being the MR2 Spyder and the other the bike. Maybe it's time for a sport's car with a front and rear seat, but those are a bit harder to come by unless you're in the European market or looking at very heavy U.S. cars that have big HP numbers but weight that's almost counter productive for the high HP figures. Don't even get me started on the M class of cars from BMW. The first thing that pops to my mind is the WRX STi, but I just can't get into the looks of the car.
Sell the Spyder and buy a sixties sports car and tell her it's an investment. LOL!! Repeat after me........Mini Cooper S. LOL!!

Ugh oh...Oh well...I didn't really add one. I just replaced one. My old Sportsman 500 2001 was due for a new clutch, cv boots, belt drive, tires, etc. etc. So, when my dealer offered me a deal I couldn't refuse on trade in for an 08, I had to add this to the garage:
