I'm was doing my 600 mile check-up on my '05 ST1300 this week-end and everything was going great, until I drained the final drive oil. It had metal shavings in the oil. Enough to make me wonder where are they coming from, normal break-in or problems with gear meshing. I read past threads about this happening but I'm a believer in checking final drive oil now.

I dont think it's uncommon. I know people who have changed it after just 200 miles and they had shavings also. I've read other posts about shavings in the 600 mile change as well.
Nothing to worry about.

Agreed..Not to worry on the firST change. If it shows up at higher miles~~

Did you happen to notice if material was steel (i.e. would it stick to a magnet)?
I actually took my entire final drive apart when I noticed a white substance in the teeth of the final drive gears during the 600 mile check. It turned out to be liquid gasket material. The factory used a little too much when the assembled the final drive. The stuff oozed into the gear teeth when the two halves of the final drive case were bolted together. Things are pretty tight inside there (aka. close tolerences). Anyhow, I was really impressed with the engineering. It's a sight to behold. Waaaaay over engineered IMHO. I wouldn't worry too much. Should be ok now that you've changed the oil... that is unless your doing wheelies every day. :p:

Noticed the same thing myself at the first change. Mine was aluminium though. If you take a flashlight and look close you can see where the final drive gears took out a ridge left over from the casting process. There was not a trace of any material on subsequent changes (I do mine every second tire/oil change) so I didn't worry.

Very normal see the CalSci website. I was amazed at how much metal there was at 600 miles. I do mine at every oil change. It gives me something to do while I wait for the engine oil to drain. I figure even using Mobil 1, it only costs a little over a dollar per change. This is a real bargain for a little peace of mind.- john :)

Yes, this seems to be normal. I changed my oil once I hit 500 miles on it.Then I changed it at again at 3000 miles. The magnetic drain plug was just full of shavings. I'm using Mobil 1 syn. and keeping my eye on this.

I did a final drive fluid change today. First change since I bought the bike new ... 3000
miles ago. No metal to report, fluid was a little black. Nothing unusal other than it taking almost a full 8 ounces of drive oil as opposed to the 5.4 the manual stated.

I hope you didn't fill it while it was on the sideSTand. That's too much juice. If overfilled, it will find its way out via the breather..And all over the rear wheel. If you fill it on the centerSTand/level ground, you cannot overfill. (providing you fill into the proper hole)

Bike was level on centerstand. Filled to the bottom of the filler hole. Took about 7 ounces. Either that or Honda shorted the bottle of 80W90.

Another thought, make sure dealer sells you correct oil for rear end. My Honda dealer sells whats suposed to be used in two stroke transmissions,(stright cut gears) and says thats ok to use in rear ends on shaft drive motorcycles. Best just to go to auto store and get the cotrrect stuff.
This is a huge mega dealer and does not carry the correct oil for Shaft Drive Honda Motorcycles..

Honda shaft drive oil (8oz) is $2.79 form Honda Direct Line. Pretty cheap insurance to me to change at every oil change.
