Is a portable radio worth carrying on a camping trip? If so, what brand, features, etc. would you recommend? Thanks.

I don't camp, but I do have a suggestion:

There's a company called Eton (http://www.etoncorp.com) that makes a line of small portables, the FR series, that run on a bunch of different power sources, including a built-in, hand-cranked dynamo. All of the models cover AM, FM and Shortwave, and some also get NOAA weather radio and TV channels 2-13. Most have LED flashlights built in and there's also the option to use a couple of the models as cell phone chargers, which could be useful, too.

I have an FR200, which they now sell under the Grundig brand. It's a very good little radio in its own right and runs for quite awhile on a relatively short crank of the generator.

i saw this in kmart, if i did not have my bike set up the way i like it, this would be a great choice.
great size too, about the size of a zippo lighter.

I too am considering a portable radio option for motocamping. I already have Sirius sat. radio on the bike, and it would be nice to easily configure my receiver to a compact dock that doesn't require bike power. Something to research I guess.

As far as features, I would think besides AM/FM for local stations, having the weather band would be very useful. Those crank units work very well and save money better spent on fuel in the tank.

I just use my MP3 player that has a FM radio in it. It is mounted on the bike, so I just pull it off and get out the ear buds. Nothing extra to carry.

I carry L. L. Bean's older-model Emergency Weather Radio (http://www.llbean.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?storeId=1&catalogId=1&langId=-1&categoryId=43034&sc1=Search&feat=sr) when camping. Received as a Christmas gift some years ago, it's meant around here for earthquakes, tsunamis, and the like -- but I've not as yet tested its intended utility.

We dont carry a regular radio, just a wx radio from Oregon Pacific (http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/I/31Q475PP4AL._AA200_.jpg). Small, and works.

I don't go anywhere without my Sangean DT-300 portable radio. Reception is fantastic if you've got flexibility to extend/manipulate the antenna cord or ear buds. The AM/FM/WX/TV bands have not only provided entertainment, but also lifesaving weather data too.

Not sure about current availability, but if I had to replace this one, I'd start with whatever Sangean currently makes. Doug

Sony Walkman model SRFM37V. I carry it on the bike. AM/FM/TV/Weather, uses earphones.

I mostly use it on AM for the traffic reports, but no reason you can't put in on your belt or in your pocket.

Can't attach the pic because I uploaded in another thread.

They are not expensive. Retail about $50 but I got mine on ebay for about $20.
