As much as I would like to get to Yellowstone, I'm not sure how that would work having a SToc event there. The surrounding towns charge an arm and a leg for hotels and campgrounds. I have a hunch that the ones on the premises are booked already for next season. Since Joshua Tree is so close to SeaSToc, maybe look into Moab or Zion. Since all those western desert areas are so hot after March, maybe early spring or late fall for dates.

I would vote for mid-April to early May for time frame. Moab sounds great to me ('cause I've never been there) but I'm already itching to travel where-ever.

From mid March to end of April, Joshua Tree NP is packed. The first two weeks of May is a good time as the temps are not that bad, and there is room in the campgrounds.

PS, Joe.... May I suggest keeping the two events, but just one "CampSTOC" and naming the Western one something else??? Diggers & I were discussing this at WISTOC. He thought "MotoCampSTOC" would be a neat combined event.

Steve, I've thought about that before to after talking with diggers.
However, all the campSTOCs in the past have been East of Texas and there are so many great areas West of Texas that offer just as good if not better camping opportunities. So many of the STOC events are focused on location, i.e. WeSTOC, TexSTOC, SierraSTOC, etc.. so, it just makes sense to me to have a campSTOC for the eastern and western halves of the country.
The MotoCampers (http://www.motocampers.com) site is a separate site and events coming out of that site are not STOC-only events, they are open to everyone regardless of what bike they are on. Obviously, STOC events are the same but putting STOC in the name implies this. This doesn't mean cross-posting of events is not allowed, that's fine but my focus over there is more on camping and less on what bike you ride.
I haven't done much at MotoCampers (http://www.motocampers.com) because of the time I devote here but I'm working on ways to get that site moving a little faster in the future.
Maybe.... We can call CampSTOC East - CampSTOC since it has traditionally been THE original CampSTOC... and, we call CampSTOC West - TentSTOC ?
How does that sound?... Obviously, this gives us the opportunity for FireWoodSTOC, LanternSTOC, Nat'lParkSTOC, TreeSTOC as well so we have room to grow.. .LOL
Trekker
09-27-2007, 07:23 AM
Naming the two event East & West makes sense to me. It's not as regionally focused as say WiSToc or TexSToc, and actually reminds me of the larger events like WeSToc (which is a larger regional focus).

Red Lodge MT has a great KOA - tent sites right by a creek. Then you get to do Beartooth over to Yellowstone.
Several Natl' Forest campsites by Cooke City, MT - I personally like the Crazy Creek campground about 10 miles East of Cooke City.
Only suggested for July / August due to elevation.

On a side note, (this is how weird my sense of humor is) if ACL ever decides to have a fall Moonburger RTE, he could call it "CornSTOC".

So are we talking a campsite in, or near Moab, or in the Arches Park? If Arches is the campground reservable?
I figure ride out of San Diego on Thursday and get to the campground on Friday. Ride around on Sat. and head home on Sunday getting home on Monday.

If we get enough people we can get a group site, only need a min of 11 for that... But, the other individual sites can be reserved.

Riding naked in hot weather is a sure way to die too... I'm sorry guys. I'm too old and fat to ride in anything over 80 degrees. Seriously! I melt! If I'm someplace next to a cool pool of water, then OK, but I had to drive there in AC first! I am so against riding in hot weather that I am probably going to blow out WeSTOC too! I check the average temps in Taos and the Mojave desert in late June and dude! I ain't going!

As long as there's water, we'll be okay. That's all you really need. You can acclimate to the heat pretty fast give that one item. At least, that what I read in a book once.

Is the plan to spend the entire time in Arches? I grew up in Moab and moved away last July. I know of a few day trip or half day trip rides around the area. The park loop is only 26 miles (granted with a lot of scenery!). There is also Canyonlands NP close by and Dead Horse Point state park, and a few more short ones I can think of that I used to like a lot.
I noticed that there were questions regarding the area. I will gladly field all that I can answer.
I think I will come out and join the group for all but the camping part. I have never been much of a camper and since I have free (required) room and board at my sisters house I think I will sleep there.
Sounds like a great time!

I still wanna see the flatbed Ford in Winslow, Arizona. :D
Never understood that lyric, btw. Always seemed to me it should be flat head Ford, much more iconic of the early hot rod years. Yeah, there are flatbed Ford trucks, always have been, prolly hauling hay in that immediate area. But flat head Fords just seem to fit the mood of the song. Tho a cute girl riding shotgun in her daddy's hay hauler invokes some image, too. :D
Anyhoo, there's supposed to be a silhoutte mural painted on a wall somewhere in Winslow. I've ridden around and thru there a couple times but never seen it. Refuse to ask anyone because that would take away from the find.
Might be a good one for Arizona tag, but if I can't find it, who can? :D

As far as the heat that time of year, I camped in Moab last July. Yes, it was hot during the day (got up to 100F or more), but as soon as the sun went down, the temperature moderated greatly. I bet it got down to about 65 at night. And we did not have any shade. I was pleasantly surprised...
