I really liked that campground that we stayed at year before last, Kettle. I think we all had a great time in that area with the exception of the tent campers the night that it came that flood. I'm looking forward to it. :D I think I'll work the Talamina ride in this time. I did the Pig Trail last time, and some touring in the northern section of the state. I'd like to go up and cross the ferry as well. Oh well...I have lots of time to plan. :D Some photos from NatSToc 2006:

Although he was at the hotel and I was camping...
Sure was a good time!

I think it was 'small' only because the snoring made it seem small...

Talimena is well worth the ride. Pretty lonely at the top when yur by yurself.
Lots of good roads in the area, I'm looking forward to it.

The infamous Bike, Blues, and BBQ is Sept 24-27 in Fayetteville. If you have never seen 50,000 HD's and a couple hundred thouand spectators, you're lucky, we see it every year. Make your reservations early, the overflow will reach out from Fayetteville a hundred miles.

I love to ride Arkansas.....but the BB&BBQ event is way over the top a big and noisy event. I have relatives in Fayetteville and they say it's a good money maker....but a mess. You might consider a date change.

I think that you'd be OK in Eureka if it was the weekend before or after. The crowd really doesn't start to come in until the Wednesday before and it's pretty well cleaned out by Sunday night. Last year all of the factory demo teams were here except Honda. I had to laugh at the Kaw boys. They had all of their bikes lined up for demo's, including the new "Conney". When the first group left the area all the conney's were gone and all the other bikes were setting. The smallest crowd was in the HD demo area.

Both areas are great.. the Devil's Fork / Greers Ferry Lake area was nice for a campSTOC but, this isn't a camping event per se.. so, I want it to be easy, for those that don't camp, to attend.
Here's the plan, I'll keep the same location but move the date back to the weekend before the original date so it will end up being Sept 19-21. The best part about the Kettle Campground is people staying across the street at the hotel could just walk over and chat around the campfire.

What about a KentS memorial run to 341? It would make for a long day, but not too many miles... Here is possible route (http://tinyurl.com/3czxdl)... Just a thought... since I cannot attend CampSToc or FriendSToc this year, maybe I'll be able to come to NatSToc... <crossed fingers> :D

If Joe was using the information that was in the KentS memorial thread, then I think he's got his curves confused... According to the descriptions, it was on 341, one mile north of CR74... I've attached a picture... :D I think one spot could be easily confused for the other... Especially when trying to find the place on a map...
P.S. I suppose I can stop by there on my way to NatSToc instead...

It's possible, I've been in that area a couple times since and the series of curves in that section are just about identical.
We'll see if we can do a better job this time around.

The only way I can find Kent's cross is that there is a big stone face on the left of the curve. I imagine by now the orange tape on the guard rail is gone or faded so bad it blends in to the guard rail.

I go up 341 ever now and then and try to keep it clean around KentS cross I will make a run up their before you guys go and clean it up and put another red ribbon on the guard rail and post the GPS position for you. NatSToc is the "National ST_Owners Meet." The last time we had it in Eureka Springs, we had a blast. Of course, last year when we had it in NC, we had a blast. I really like both locations. Data, no one has ever paid any dues for a STOC number, so no sweat. It's free, so why not get one. OTOH, nobody really cares. See ya there in about a month.
I got mine from the Founders, so I'm kind'a proud of it. They didn't _have_ to invite me. Now, it's more a way to track the growth of our favorite model bike. Jay, it shows on any decent map of Bull Shoals Lake. I've been over it several times. Relatively easy to find.
Talimena Drive from Mena, AR into OK is a really good ride. Also done it several times. This past spring, I left Rich Mountain Campground about 7 AM and rode a few miles of _really dense_ fog to the OK line. Couldn't even _see_ the Wilhamena Lodge as I passed by.
It's a pretty good trip from Eureka Springs to Mena, then another 70 or so across the Talimena Drive (AR-88 and OK-1.) All back roads better figure at least an extra day.

I called and talked with Gay and told her to expect about 20 campers and cabin campers. If you are coming with an RV, you better reserve a spot. She didn't say how many cabins were available for that weekend.
So do we need to call and reserve? Or did she say we were ok?

Ok GUYS! I just called the campground and made my reservations. I asked how they are looking for that weekend and she said if you plan on coming you better get your reservations done. They have three different motorcycle groups coming that weekend! Better get on it. Oh...and I got a site that they let you have two tents on. Sorry the second spot is already spoken for, but she made it sound like some of the site can accomodate two tents and some cannot, better ask when you call.

Just and FYI for those coming up hwy 7 (the pig trail)from 40 it will be closed according to this
Officials said Thursday the road is expected to be closed 3-4 weeks.
“Work crews at this location on Highway 7 had traffic restricted to one lane and were beginning repair work from the damage suffered earlier this year when this week’s rain caused some cracking to the lane we had open,” Scott Mullis, AHTD District 8 engineer, said. “Because of the potential instability of the roadway, we decided to close the highway to through traffic.”
A detour route has been established to the east of Highway 7 that is routing traffic onto State Highways 16 and 27 between Pelsor and Dover.

The road closed is a portion of Hwy7 and the detour in itself is a good ride and will add about an hour. The Pig trail is Hwy 23 and it's open either way from I-40 is a pretty good ride. I perfer Hwy 21 that runs from Clarksville to Berryville

Highway 7 is not the Pig Trail. Highway 23, several miles west of Highway 7, is the Pig Trail Scenic Highway. The Pig Trail is only a 19 mile section of Hwy 23 near Mulberry River outfitters.

I did an ironbutt in an ambulance on Thursday before Ike and almost another one Sunday.
I was actually considering just loading up and begging floor space or two trees for the Hennesy before the Sunday episode but I just don't feel safe to do it right now. Maybe I will wake up friday and have an urge to motivate, but not right now....

I really liked arches NP... and the area, even though touristy, never seemed very packed. I think STurgis would also be cool... In fact.. yes.. just made the decision... As many others have stated - it was great to put a few names and faces together in ES. After all the "comments" I was glad to see I didn't get the dirtiest ST award!
Bob (black Kaw Connie) and I headed out Sunday morning after some last minute visiting and breakfast. We hit the road officially about 10 AM or a little after and made it home late Sunday evening. I rolled in my garage in Cookeville, TN about 11:05 PM. My best estimate is 1,809 miles for the trip. Thank the good Lord that, while many of those were eventful miles, no mishaps, murdered wildlife (at least that we can take the blame for) and no visits with the friendly state employees of AR, MO or TN (can't say there should NOT have been some, though... :duck:)
We enjoyed a nice dinner Friday evening with Mike and Dave (btw - missed you Sat, Dave - we thought you might be coming back after the visit with the grand kids... ???) then a great ride with our own tour guide in Mike on Saturday! Bob and I played our way home across southern MO, then slashed across AR going SE on 14 before heading back up to cross the mighty Mississippi on I-155 into Dyersburg, TN for dinner. From there it was just "get home".
Thanks to Keith Q. and Joe for assembling this motley crew close enough and on a schedule which permitted me to finally get to attend a *STOC event. I hope to get to another one or three in the next decade or so...
Looking forward to the pics. Bob shot lots of video on our runs so we may see if we can post some of the more intriguing clips for general review if we (er, "he") can work out all the technical details... :D
Now it's back to :work2:

It was a great weekend! I was able to put some faces with the names, met many new people, and riding in Arkansas is always the best. Joe and I left a few mynutes before bybdawg. I found out that Joe never saw a motorcycle he didn't want to pass! We passed every motorcycle... every thing we saw with wheels headed north! Especially motorcycles. Had a great time

Hehehe,, Rick, I guess we shoulda rode Saturday together, 141 miles home in 2 hours 10 mins. I gotta stop that. I saw one fuzz in Mountain home going the other way.

Well after 4,659 miles, Carole and I are back in OB. She got her longest day ever on a motorcycle today(749). I fully intended to stop in Gila Bend for the day and finish with somewhere around 500 miles. When we got there she asked me how many more miles to OB and I told her about 250. She asked me if I could make it and I laughed and told her I think so. So off we went, stopped for water and gas in Yuma and off we went over the hills and desert and went through a range of temperatures today of 33 for a low and 104 for a high. We had a great time at Nat/TexSToc. Nice to see all the folks. Has to be the biggest non WeSToc event I've attended. Where was the Banner???!!! I know Carole has a bunch of pictures to post, but don't know when she'll get them sized and posted. Again great to see my old friends and meet some new ones. Looking forward to going to Marble Falls next year.

Landon, what am I holding in your pic #7??
Folks, made it home late yesterday (10 PM) after traversing AR, OK, TX, NM and AZ. Gave up the good ride when I hit the AZ line just north and west of Zuni Pueblo, NM. Slabbed it on I-40 the rest of the way. I-40 westbound is a great place from which to watch an Arizona sunset. :D
This 3 week trip followed a meandering path to Tex/NATSTOC. After TentSTOC, Pony Express, WiSTOC, and visiting family in IL and IN, I meandered west across IN, IL, and MO.
Finally got a pic of some deer in central IN. These three were standing in the road when I came over the hill. By the time I got the camera set, they were nearly gone. Saw a lot more critters this trip, some live, many dead. Armadillos, deer, coyotes, and skunks in OK and TX. I didn't hit anything this trip.

Later, I crossed the Mississippi from Illinois to Missouri. A local park provided this closeup of the high water.

I arrived in Eureka Springs late on Friday, met folks for a little chatter before hitting the hay. Thanks to Landon and friends for help setting up the tent. Saturday, rode over to see what Push Mountain Road was all about. Okay but too open for real fun. I prefer the tight twisties. Dinner on Saturday was a pleasure, with more than 50 at The Road House. Always great to visit with old friends and make some new ones.

Some folks at the campground. Jerry, holding the drink, is a scooter guy who camped near us. STO was in progress (Scooters To The Ozarks) was in progress at the same time. Lots of interesting scoots, but I didn't take any pics.

Left fairly early Sunday, followed 2-lanes all thru AR and OK, nothing specific but many miles of gently undulating terrain until near TX. Best road of the day was 62 headed east out of Eureka Springs. Took this pic along the Illinois River in East OK. Not what we usually think of when Oklahoma comes into the conversation.

Spent Sunday night in a field off of US-270 near Seiling, OK.

It flattened out mostly after that. Lots of stripper wells still in operation in the old OK fields. Here's ReSTored getting a refill direct from the source. :D

Did some outrageous dirt roads west of Hartley, TX. Trying to follow directions received from a local, I got into some open range cow country before finding the correct road. He had told me it was ruff, but I was still pretty shaken (literally! This road was used by heavy trucks as a short cut. It's mainly oiled and graded sand, plenty good surface 'til the trucks break thru and the sand is soft and deep. Only dumped her once, tho.)
Before finding that road, found a couple of these, resulting in u-turns.

Came about 8 miles west on this little track, trying to reach US-54.

This pic is 180° from the one above, resulting in one of many u-turns. http://www.st-owners.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=36210&d=1222277800
NM was good, followed NM 104 up to Las Vegas, then more surface roads in the AM to Alba-q-q. Found some rain on the way to Las Vegas, this rainbow was the result. I only got damp.

A little I-state then NM 53 thru Indian lands. Hit I-40 at Sanders, AZ and slabbed it home. Done. 8,101 miles moved me back up to 9 on the mileage list.

Seems as if I recall him saying that all of us "motelers" had paid enough to cover them serving him a little of that swill. lol While I didn't try the coffee, the OJ and cinnamon buns were pretty good, as were the bagels and cream cheese. :D Am I the only one that got a ticket coming back from AR? I guess I'm just lucky that way.

I was running about 85 in a 55 heading South down 62 toward 40 if my memory serves on the road numbers. I had slowed to about 80 right before topping the hill and managed to get to about 78 before he tagged me. He was sitting right against a rock wall which ran up pretty high on both sides of the road. He was also beyond the crest of the top of the hill. So, there was no way of seeing him before it was too late. He was real nice about the whole deal, and I had broken many AR hwy. laws before even starting up that hill. He said, "I saw you get on the brakes pretty hard son." I said yeah, but it was a bit late, eh. He asked me where I was headed and if I had any reason to be in such a hurry. I told him that I didn't really have a good reason other than wanting to make it back to Bama before dark. He said, "Well...I'm not going to give you a warning, but I will drop the speed down to reflect that you were running 10-14 over which will save you about $120, and you'll be able to keep it off your record. I figured I'd been beat, and I just took that ticket that he handed me while I was on my seat. He said, "now come on back son, if you ever want to try it again..." Okay...I'm making that last part up, but the rest is unfortunately true. Considering I had done triple digits earlier, I felt lucky that he had only clocked me at that speed and reduced it down. Another 100 yards or so and the Caddy on my rear would've gotten the ticket instead of me. :-(

I used a bunch of rabbits on my run west. Also, I consciously slowed before going over any rises while on the 2-lane. Gotta admit I broke my "no speeding" pledge once I got into NM. On NM 104, headed toward Las Vegas, I was running Texas speeds (70 is posted on most TX 2-lanes.) So I was +15 for many miles. ZERO traffic!!!
Also, once in AZ on I-40, ran +80 all the way to Kingman. Limit is 75. I was barely keeping up with traffic, including the big rigs.
Sorry to hear about yur ticket, but, nanner-nanner-nanner. :D

Hi,
Mike Sumner and I finally made it back from TEXSTOC. Yes we took the long way around..From Florida up to Shreveport to get Uncle Dan and make it to Eureka springs. Then after the festivities, up to HWY 160 in Mo and thru southern Illinois, southern Indiana, southern Ohio, West Virginia, Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee, and back to Florida... Some really neat roads in South eastern Ohio and ALL of West Virginia.. Made it to the AMA Motorcycle museum and found the largest rotatable (a word?) radiotelescope in the world in West Virginia. Also saw some awsome wind generators down route 32 in W VA.. Got some service in Virginia (tire, starter check starter, valve check, plugs, yada yada yada). Down to Tenn to a friends place and rode the Cherahola Hwy and the twisties of North Carolina...
Great trip.......... about 5600 miles for me.........
All in all a great three weeks off...........

Lucky me, you too?
Ya,,, :pray1::pray1:
