Yeah I've been to Texas a couple of times for BBQ, but there is good BBQ elsewhere also.
It is a stretch between Charlestown and Winchester. I'm good to go with either.

RH&B used to be really great when there were two of them, but they've kind of morphed into a chain. The food's still decent, but not what I'd call RTE-worthy. There used to be one in Frederick near the intersection of 15 and 70. ETA: That location is closed.

Guy I work with lives in Winchester and recommends the Cork Street Tavern (http://www.jesara.com/corkstreettavern.htm) in town.

About 30 minutes from me. After chowing down, you can cruise the Colonial Parkway that runs from Jamestown (through Billysburg) to Yorktown. Then meander your way back to MD on Rt.17 to Fredericksburg, VA.

"This forum is just for official Ride To Eats events - meaning NOT the discussions on how they came to be or where to go or when... that should be in the Events or Regional areas. This forum is for posting the official RTE once all the details have been put together.

When posting an RTE - please post the date of the RTE and location in the thread title, for example:

2007-09-27 - CA - San Diego - Joe's Burgers

This will quickly let someone know WHEN and WHERE. Please include the year so an old event doesn't become confused with a current event or a non-event.

Threads in this forum will show up on the main homepage RTE tab and will show up in descending order based on the title name so having the date first will put it in the correct order."

There is a place on 151 in nellesford just south on the way to the wintergreen road. Blue Ridge Pig. It is a real hole in the wall. I had my entire ex-office staff in here last here from Texas to visit and we ate there. pretty darn good. a little pricey for what it is, but it is definately local color (and would probably never pass a health inspection.)

I live in Charles Town and there is no such thing as GOOD BBQ here :-( About the best place is the Barn Door out on the side of the mountain on 50. If you want the BEST BBQ in the world, go to Wilber's in Goldsboro, NC. Now THAT is good BBQ and the hush puppies are the best...hands down.

We're locked in to a day trip and only 3 hours home if I need to make time. Should be plenty of daylight not dark till around 6 even with the time change. We will most likely check out the Pottery factory after lunch we haven't been down there in quite a few years. I'm thinking a route similar to what we took to De except going on down 3 to 17 then over into yorktown and back north to Pierce's. Leave up here around 7am

So this is a defo, 1:00 PM at Pierces in Lightfoot? I hope you VA and MD folks show because this is quite a stretch for an Ohioan for an RTE. Actually NC is not that far away for this. Elizabeth City is about 2 hours to Pierces.

I generally take 522 and 17 once I get to MD. Then back on the slab in Fredricksburg VA and I-64 to Lightfoot. It has been a long time since I took 17 south of Fred. I could do that, but time wise it may not be prudent.

gene
10-09-2007, 09:34 AM
That would work out maybe, we could meet you around Winchester for breakfest as I know Blrfl also like to get early starts. If you come thru early enough we can run some nice 2-lanes down to Yorktown and avoid 95 and 64

Blrfl
10-09-2007, 10:08 AM
I know that area pretty well. Off the top of my head, from Winchester, we could run US522 down to US60, bypass Richmond on VA288, pick up VA10 to get across 95/295 and then make our way onto VA5, which will land us right in Williamsburg. The roads around Richmond are a crashing bore, so be prepared for that. As it is, GMaps says it's a 5+ hour trip from Canton to Winchester on the slab, but it tends to be pessimistic about speed. I'll have a stab at it in the next night or two and see if I can cook us up a nice route that lands us there at eatin' time.

Mac: If you have an Autocom, I'll try to have a spare radio-in-a-pouch on hand that weekend.

motomac
10-09-2007, 10:44 AM
Mark, I have a CB but no Autocom. It is a 5 hour trip to DC from my home. I rarely go through DC to get to my son's home in Elizabeth City, but when I do it is usually Saturday morning. Otherwise it's 522 to 17.
Gene, I tried to open your map, but my Streets and Trips didn't do it. Richmond has always been a mystery to me. I seemed to get lost every time I got off the slab around there so, I just run 295.

The problem with RHB is that they're franchised, so quality varies from store to store. The one in Fairfax City is still pretty decent, but not great.

I'm pretty pleased with Willard's BBQ in Chantilly, VA, as far as local places go.

I would except for two things: One; she spends Saturdays with her family in Mathews County ... which is OK by me because then I have the day to do as I please (and is mostly spent this year building a new engine for the car pictured in my avatar), and two; she doesn't ride with me at all because she hates getting "helmet hair." I had some weather before arriving at Bob Evans. Little rain and snow in the PA mountains. Made it to Winchester for breakfast and met Johnny, Mark and reaquainted with Lisa and Gene. The ride to Williamsburg for lunch was really good. I had never been on any of the roads North of Richmond. I started feeling comfortable about where I was once we hit Richmond. We arrived at Pierces at 1:30 and were greeted by Jan, up from Newport News. I don't think anyone was disappointed with their meal. We parted company at about 1445 and I made it to my son's home about 5:15.

Blrfl

Blrfl checking in as home safely.

Our story pretty much goes along with Mac's until we parted company (and without the trip from Ohio to Winchester). Gene and I ran up 64 for a few miles, picked up 30 and 33, crossed the river at West Point and made our way to US 17N. From there it was almost all 17. We stopped for gas after running our bikes down to fumes (estimated 24 remaining), ran up to FBurg, stopped for a hot drink and took 17 up through Warrenton and then took our usual routes home.

I'll be the first to say that I would have preferred a 70-degree day, but today was a good test of how far I can really go in the cold. A jacket with liner and full rain suit as a windbreaker did it for the most part. My hands warmed up instantly after I got home, and I'm working on my legs. Lunch was good, as was the company.

It was great meeting everyone!

Gene and Lisa stopped to so some shopping on the way home and should be checking in a little later.

I met some hardy riders today, and I enjoyed it. My portion of the ride was from the other direction, and I travelled a mere 25 miles to meet Mac, Mark, Lisa & Gene at Pierce's. So, a 50º riding temp was no big deal because my exposure was very short compared to the others. On a positive note, I did remember to buy a quart of BBQ as was reqested by my SO.

Upon leaving Pierce's, Mac followed me eastbound on I-64 until I reached my exit, then he continued on to NC. Glad to hear two of y'all have checked in as home safely, and I trust Lisa & Gene will do likewise soon.

Take care, <Ken>

Forgot to add...

My total for the day was about 400 miles, which I'm pales compared to Mac's 37 million, but that's a good day out for me. :)

Gene and I saw exactly seven bikes: one guy on an FJR, one on an unidentified bike behind us on Rochambeau road (which I saw but Gene didn't), a cluster of three HDs (in leather jackets and what Gene called "Halloween masks") and one squidly-looking dude on a white crotch rocket that had an extended swingarm and was lowered to beat the band. I think that last one started life as a 'Busa.

I love these rides because I always get a great night's sleep afterward!

The food was okay, but Memphis and Kansas City are my favorite kinds of BBQ and Pierce's is a little more of a Tennessee/Carolina hybrid. (Yes, I know Memphis is in Tennessee, but it's a different style.)

I think I'm paying for the time out in the weather with this cold I have, but it was worth getting one last long ride in. Another 400 or so miles and I'll be into my first 10,000-mile year.

Mine is (will be) a one-piece Aerostich Roadcrafter (http://www.aerostich.com/catalog/US/Roadcrafter-One-Piece-Suit-p-16133.html). Gene, Lisa and Mac were wearing Olympias, which win the eyball-searing contest by a nose.

Mark,

Have you tried Dixie Bones in Woodbridge? The rolls are on the dry side so I recommend going to the all-you-can-eat brunch on Sundays at noon and eating the various meats along with all of the other available sides minus the rolls. Real good stuff if you ask me.

We are using Warm+ Safe liners and they worked great! And they give a 20% discount to club members when you register with them online which saves a nice chunk of change compared to Gerbings. I've used both and perfer the Warm+ safe to the Gerbing jacket

Wish I could have been there. Oh well, there will be more riding after new year, I guess.

I'm sorry I missed it, I see a bunch of people there that I would have liked to hang out with.
