Heck yea - I'll be there. I will be making the epic 2.5 mile ride from my home just down the road.
I do have an FPR that I have not installed yet. But probably too late for my first valve clearance check.
I installed the super cool Farkle Harness this weekend - good stuff!

I always look forward to Tom's events. The nicest people hang out there! For those of you looking to get some farkling done, get there early, Tom's place is large with room for 6-8 bikes to be worked on at once, but every time this event happens more and more people are showing up, it fills up fast! Also if you didn't know, Tom is a resident expert at those throttle body (starter valve) sync., the counter balance adjustment, valve clearance checks, oh heck, it would probably be easier to list out the stuff he's not an expert on. Ok he doesn't have a clue how to adjust the drive chain on a STeed!

Well I haven't missed one yet so I will be there.
I will be bringing my tire changing equipment. So, if you want to get a set of tires mounted and balanced let me know in advance so I can make sure that everyone will be taken care of.
If you just want to just check the balance of your tires we can do that as well.
See everyone there.

Bringing your own tools is a good idea. Turbo Tom has tools, and the other guys showing up will have tools I'm sure, but you never know if these tools will be in use when you need 'em. (all of sudden I am feeling this fuzzy warm feeling with all this talk about tools... hmmm...)

You bring the tires and we'll get them mounted.

George,
I never turn down help. Let's see if there is much interest in tire work as it gets closer to the date. No need for you to lug extra equipment if it won't be needed. However, if we get 2 or 3 people wanting tire work done then the extra jack/tools would come in handy.

Byron,
Do I need to buy anything else besides the tires and valve stems? I bought the 90 degree stems that are recommended in the forums. I've never changed a motorcycle tire, so I'm clueless, but I'll make sure to get anything needed.

Alan,
Nothing else required. I've got some weights and moly paste. Even if we were to find a bearing problem which I doubt I've got the necessary parts and you can just pay me back for whatever is necessary. I've change out about 15 sets of tires since purchasing my No-Mar and haven't had a single instance of needing extra parts.

...It will be good to see you and the other guys we've ridden with again. I'm curious to learn if Byron notices any differences in the three types of wheel balancers.
Byron used the balancer you gave him on my tire changes a couple of weeks ago. It was awesome! Such precision! My wheel would just turn and turn and turn like perpetual motion, or something. Cool factor plus! It was very nice of you to give it to him. When he told me I was shocked! Must of been expensive? See you at TechSTOC!

12-23-2007, 04:17 PM
Hey Fred!
If I bring my wheel chair down to the TECHSTOC, do you think that Byron could balance the wheels for me. I hang out at the corners sometimes and bumper draft (Latch onto the bumpers of stopped cars and ride for free). When we get up to about 40 MPH I have a shimmy and vibration. Maybe we could check the wheel alignment also. I'm going to have to talk to Tom about a cool Luggage Rack like the one he installed for me at the last TECHSTOC. This Wheelchair does not have much room for storage. Tom and his Crew are GREAT PEOPLE! Say HI to everyone for me.

12-27-2007, 10:49 AM

I could do the balance but someone else would have to check the alignment as I don't have a tool for that. :)

Looks like I have two tire sets setup so I should be busy. :D

Yes, I am one of the guys wanting to change my tires. I bought a set of OEMs (unfortunately the rear is a "U") for $201 including tax from JC Cycles in Tustin (through their eBay store, but was able to save the shipping costs by picking them up).

Originally I thought I'd have my fiance follow me down with my toolbox and tires, but I'm wondering if I can make it down there on my own, with everything I need.
Can I safely carry two tires on the back on my ST? If so, how?
Tom's instructions for the FRP give a good indication of the tools needed for replacement, but is there anything else I should bring?
Should I bring any other tools to assist with tire replacement?
Alan
Edit: I forgot to ask if there's a place down there that I can leave my old tires, understanding that I will have to pay a recycling fee.

Remember, when checking valves the bike is supposed to be completely cold.. so it helps to get there and let it sit over night. I'm not sure how cold is cold.. sitting for 4 hrs? beats me.
Stack them and strap them down behind you...
You'll look odd on the FWY; but, that isn't a big deal...
I'd make sure the straps don't rub the plastic...

George, I hope that the acetylene torch and hack saw were for some other projects, say counter balance adjustment or valve check, maybe even synchronizing starter valves. I've watched Byron change tires before all you need is a hard hat, drill press, hard hat, milling machine, hard hat, hydraulic press, hard hat and the little allen wrench included in all "tool kits" on 2006 and newer machines. (I don't believe the miracle foam is used). Oh, did I mention that it was a good thing to have a hard hat on hand?

Byron or any with the right information. It was my intention to remove the wheels prior to coming up. Figured that having 3 sets of tires to change is plenty enough of a challenge without having to remove the wheels from the bikes too. What I need to know is what size allen wrench and socket do I need to remove the front and rear wheel axles? I know that that rear wheel nut needs one big socket, but I'm willing to bet my neighborhood Craftsman store has what I need. Appreciate any help on this.

Yep, bought a bike lift last weekend. I've had Byron do the work each time but I need to learn and assure that I have the skills to do it solo. Truthfully on my last bike, I never had a tire changed by anyone but me and with hand tire tools. I know I can do it, but Byron's tool makes it oh so much easier. Three sets of tires where you have to dismount and mount the wheels is going to be a challenge. I did not assume that Byron and George wanted to be working all day. They may appreciate the opportunity to take a break and enjoy the company as well.
Thanks for the list Forest, that's the information I was looking for. I see a trip to the Craftsman's tool section in my near future.
BTW Dan, was teasing about the working part, I'm a government worker, we use the term "work" loosely.

Once I am done with my morning "duty" I'm going to head down there for some grub. I hope at least by 9am if not sooner. I do hope you can join me Dana. That would be great!

Hey Fred,
Count me & Kitty in for breakfast. We'll go to TC first to look for you. If I see your bike, but not you, we'll go to the restaurant. We should be there between 8-8:30.

I have the tools required to do the Starter valve sync. We do quite a few of them at the events.
See everyone Sat. Thanks Tom

Well all the plans I had to remove the wheels myself and just bring the wheels and tires up has gone bust. I can't get the motorcycle jack under the bike! I tried to make a jig like Byron has to distribute the weight and keep the bike centered but it takes up too much room and doesn't leave enough clearance! I will be taking a closer look at your setup tomorrow Byron. The good new is I get to ride! The bad news is that it will take a bit longer and I won't have my wheels all cleaned up when I arrive.

Dana, I don't know what type jack you have, but with mine I put the bike on the center stand and put the jack against the stand and push the bike off the center stand and it lands exactly right to center the weight and then just jack it up. To get it off the jack, jjust let the jack down and put the bike back on the center stand and pull the jakc out from under the bike works like a champ on the Gold Wing and the ST.

Bad news and good news... You'll get to ride up! Woo hoo! I'll be stopping at the I-5 rest stop just north of Oceanside around 6:45am and I'll hang there for 10-15 mins. before heading up to Tom's if you and anybody else coming up from the San Diego area want to meet me there and ride up together. I'll have a thermo of coffee too (w/sugar and cream). See ya tomorrow!

Huh??!! I put the bike on the center stand, remove the rear wheel, put the jack under the sump and jack up the front wheel (bike remains on the center stand) and remove the front wheel. Reverse process to get the bike back on the road.
Oh, don't forget to check the brake pads and wheel bearings and rear splines while the wheels are off.

Ok, the big surprise was a ST-Owners.com banner for the "West Coast Chapter 2008"....whoohoooo!
Just got back and man there's nothing like brand new tires to make the bike sweep around the corners. I felt like the tires were putting spikes in the road they gripped so hard.
A BIG BIG thanks to Tom and his entire gang at Turbo City for hosting this event and my special thanks goes to Byron and George who helped so much getting my tires changed.
Bryon, it was good to see you, thanks for making the trip all the way from Phoenix!

Got home a few minutes ago. A big thanks to Turbo Tom for hosting another great event. Byron and George, you guys were great. Too bad I picked up the wrong size front tire (c'mon Byron, you can make a 17" fit!). Got the new tire just down the street and have new front and rear rubber. I will get the mess sorted out on the wrong size front tire on Monday.
Thanks again, I am looking forward to the next one!

OK! Here's the pics from the Turbo City TechSTOC! It was a great success! A big turn out for farkling, fixing, and fun! Everybody kept busy doing tire changes, throttle body sync, FPR installs, and various Turbo City farkle installing! Boy! Was Turbo Tom and his crew busy!
As Dana pointed out in the previous post the BIG SURPRISE was unveiled at this first of the year's STOC events! The new ST-Owners.com Let's Ride! WEST COAST CHAPTER banner! Everybody there was real pleased and proud to see it and sign it! Thanks to Joe and ST-Owners.com for providing the West Coast States with a ST-Owners.com banner of their own! It will now travel to the various West Coast events such as the upcoming DesertSTOC, CrestSTOC, and even to WeSTOC XIII in Taos New Mexico in June, and others as they occur. Wow! We're on the STOC map now! :hotpepper :clap2: :bow1: :STOC:
So enjoy the pictures and a BIG THANKS!!! to TURBO CITY and TURBO TOM for their generosity for putting on one the beST STOC Events of the year! The donuts, coffee, pizza and sodas were GREAT!!! :clap2:

Well it was a great event to start of the new year. From as far North as Bakersfield, from as far South as San Diego and from as far East as Phoenix, AZ. Everyone coming together with a common goal of working on bikes and seeing old friends and making new ones. If the rest of the years events are anything like this, it is going to be one heck of a GOOD YEAR! :D
Just got in.
27F was the low on the way to and 47F was the low on the way back...
With the wind chill these temps were pure torture for a desert rat! :D
Had a good time and it was good to see all and meet new faces too...
Thanks Tom!!!

George, thanks for the balancer info. Byron really had that thing spinning ALL day long!
Byron, everyone's is VERY appreciative of the hard work you did spooning those stout tires with your awesome No-Mar setup.
Tom, once again you were a gracious and generous host, and your expertise under the hood came in very handy. And thanks for letting me have my "garage sale" to clear out some of the extra motorcycle stuff from my crowded garage.
I enjoyed chatting with the gang, and at least 4 riders tried out my Russell front seat as a demo prior to a possible purchase. Looks like we had a few new faces, and one very nice fellow who recently moved up to the ST1300 from a Vespa scooter.
I can't wait for the next gathering, and in the mean time, plan to do some riding out to Julian for some pie with the boys soon!

I would really like to thank Turbo Tom for hosting this wonderful event. I had a fantastic time.
Byron, I really appreciate your exacting standards for precision tire mounting and balancing. I am grateful to have my life and tires in your skilled and caring hands.
George, many thanks for helping me get my tires off for the tire change. I especially appreciate you teaching me a little of how to do it. If I keep trying for a long time, I may eventually get into AP wrenching classes. But only if I keep trying and pay attention to excellent teachers like you. Your thoughtfulness in getting that special adaptor from Marc Parnes was off the charts. It was also great to see Kitty again.
Walrus, thanks for introducing me to the ST guys. I am grateful to know everyone and be privileged to attend events like this. I would never have found out about it without your research. Now that you have your new FPR, I would say we are ready to travel about 1500 miles in 24 hours,,,,

Many thanks to Turbo Tom for putting on this event. A little bit of everything there - guys doing work on their bikes, MANY getting new tires mounted and some like me, there just to see everyone and look at the bikes to see what has been added.
Byron and George put in a LONG, hard day with all of the tire mounting. First time for this one, I believe. I hope they weren't too overwhelmed and will come back again.
Good to see Mark & Bryan from AZ again. That is a long days ride for those guys.
I think I passed Fred today about noon going North on the 5 at the weigh station. He pulled off on Basilone road. I had to make a quick run to Carlsbad to pick up another computer. Mine caught a virus early yesterday morning and is totally dead.

This is how I do it. Put bike on Center stand. Remove rear wheel first than jack up front just a bit using small floor jack. Remove front wheel and place axle back in bike and set front on jack stand. Take wheels to tire changer. install new tires Install wheels in reverse order.

O.K., just to set the records straight, we only mounted and balanced 3 1/2 sets of tires. The wheels were pulled and re-installed by their owners with George and I lending a hand here and there.
This wasn't only a tire changing event. There was at least one valve check, don't know if adjustment was necessary, and three starter valve syncs along with some farkle installers like radiator protection. Tom's service bay was full of bikes all day long.
It was a great knowledge sharing experience for all who attended.

Glad you all had a good time. Sorry I missed it, but I wouldn't have been able to go even if it wasn't for this crud and knee problem! :(
Turns out that when I got home from work Friday night, the waterpump on the Supra was leaking! Supra's are not a good car to let overheat, and thank goodness it hadn't been leaking that long (we are talking 1 1/2 hour commute), where it didn't effect the temperature. :o:
So Saturday, after breakfast and picking up the parts, I spent the afternoon replacing the waterpump. All is well again! :p:

THANK YOU !!!
I just wanted to express a heart felt thank you to everyone at this event. I learned so much and gathered some very good information and have put some of it into place already.
This most recent Mexico run went so much better than the others simply because I was better prepared and had "the right products" for the right jobs.
Some of the things I learned were very simple, others not so simple, but all of them have added up to making my daily riding so much more enjoyable.
What I appreciate the most is seeing so many other STs and gathering good ideas from each one. Everyone has tweaked their ST to them and taking and leaving ideas from each I have tailored out an ST that is for me, nearly perfect.
I would never have imagined that a single event could have made such a big change.
I am headed out of the country for a few days but when I return I will begin a BLOG about the few things I have done which has made the most impact.
I would really enjoy seeing more and more such blogs with Tips & Tricks to help others, new to the ST like myself, make the most of their ride.
Thank you again and I really appreciate everyone who helps make this forum a great place to hang out.
