View Full Version : Leaking front of drive shaft

I have either oil or grease coming from the boot at the front end of the final drive shaft. I took it in a few months ago and the tech said it was probably just excess grease from when the bike was built. Well, I have close to 4000 miles on it and there is still liquid coming out of the boot. I am attaching a picture. Could grease still be coming out of there after 4000 miles or could there be some sort of leak from the engine into the front area of the final drive? I checked the oil level in the drive and it looks fine. The engine oil level looks ok too.

Thanks for any info.

Regardless of what it is tell the bull **** tech it isn't right and fix it properly. I would consider that a safety concern.

Thanks for the replys.
It seems like it is grease but I will take it in next week anyways.

I am having this issue as well. I have a 2003 with 12,635 km on it.

I originally thought that it was engine oil as it seems to be pooling on the shift rod linkage boot.

I changed my engine oil tonight and found that it was coming from the front of the driveshaft, right where it connects to the engine housing. That general area anyway, I can't really see under there as I don't have a lift, so my head just fits.

The strange thing is that if the bike is on the center stand, it doesn't leak a drop. If it is on the sidestand (how I parked through the entire CanSTOC) then a finger tip sized bit of oil is on the ground.

It must have to do with the pressure on the swingarm when it is on the ground.

I am going to take it into the dealer next week as I only have until August 21/06 until the factory warranty is up. I have already purchased on extra 4 years just in case.

I wanted to update this thread.

I brought my bike in to the dealer again as it was still leaking after they checked it before in July (see post above). They told me that it was assembly grease, but I didn't think so. Went away anyway.

So I went to ride it the day of the toy run in town 2 weeks ago and when I started it up, the bike started to smoke. I shut it down and noticed oil all over the right header pipe, which was the cause of the smoke.

Checked the oil and found it was below the min line. Filled it up and rode. Called dealer when I got home and booked it back in and told them to order the following parts:

• Replace final output shaft oil seal 28x46x7 (91201-MV1-003)
• Replace final output shaft cover O-ring 66x2.5 (91351-881-000)
• Replace engine oil Honda GN4 10w40 non-synthetic (oil filter, drain plug aluminum washer)

The work was performed under warranty, but they did charge me for the oil and filter, which I thought should be covered, but whatever. They had to drop the swingarm to replace the seal and o-ring, but at least they didn't have to pull the engine as the manual suggests.

The good thing is that it is fixed, hopefully, and I found out that my dealer that I bought the bike from wrote down the warranty expiry date wrong, removing a whole year.

So I am covered under my factory warranty until Sept 20, 2007 and my extended warranty is covered until Sept 20, 2012. So overall, the day worked out great, except that I am $65 CAD lighter due to the oil change and extra liter I bought for top ups.

I am bringing the shop some donuts tomorrow or the next day for helping me out and fixing it quickly.

Charging for labor to change the oil that they already had out of the bike is B.S.
Oil yes, filter yes, labor no, the oil had to come out anyhow. Ask them "if you would have re-used the old oil, would you charge me for dumping it back in?"

Glad you got it taken care of.
