Ran across the Olympus Stylus 770 SW (http://www.olympusamerica.com/cpg_section/product.asp?product=1287) and thought maybe some of you all might be interested.
SHOCKPROOF (5FT).
Accidents happen — but don't worry! The Stylus 770 SW's durable construction is designed to withstand a five-foot drop, bump, or other mishap, so your camera and images are protected.
WATERPROOF (33FT).
We've combined precision optics with innovative waterproof sealant technologies. Capture beautiful snapshots in the pool, at the waterpark or in the ocean — down to depths of 33 feet (10m) — and even record underwater movies with sound.
FREEZEPROOF (-10°C/14°F).
Here's another reason this camera is as tough as you are. Whether you're skiing in Switzerland, climbing in Canada or just sledding in your own backyard, the 770 SW is winterized to perform at below-freezing temps.
CRUSHPROOF (220LBF).
One tough little camera. The stainless steel body and reinforced LCD makes the Stylus 770 SW able to withstand up to 220 lbs. of pressure, so your camera and images are always protected.
2.5" HYPERCRYSTAL LCD.
Now you can compose, view and share your images even in direct sunlight. The large, high-resolution LCD features a wider viewing angle (140 degrees, left to right or up and down) and anti-glare technology that uses natural light to brighten the LCD.
DIGITAL IMAGE STABILIZATION.
With high ISO sensitivity and faster shutter speeds, you can capture sharp, blur-free images, even if your subject is moving.
MANOMETER.
The Stylus 770 SW features a built-in manometer that measures air and water pressure to calculate the altitude and depth of your photos.
LED ILLUMINATOR.
A built-in LED illuminates your subjects when you can’t use a flash — perfect for shooting macro or low-light portraits.

That's a pretty spiffy package. It doesn't appear to have a tripod socket on the bottom, which would be a dealbreaker for me.

I just called Olympus and they verified that it does have a tripod socket.
This camera is looking better and better....

I'm impressed with this model. I was thinking of stepping-up and getting the new Canon Powershot G9 (http://reviews.cnet.co.uk/digitalcameras/0,39030239,49292739-39282213o,00.htm) (to replace my Canon Ixus 50), but this Olympus is making me think twice ..
Thanks for the info NightRDR

That's nice.. .I never saw that when I looked form mine... but I also wanted something that used SD memory so my phone, camera, GPS all use the same memory. Not to say that situation won't change in fact it's probably the only time that's happened.. LOL.. I can't tell where the power button is...

I used to try to do that but not anymore. Just get a really big memory card for the camera and most people will be good to go. Our little Sony has a one gig card that we might upgrade to a two gig soon. That holds a substantual amount of photo's. If that isn't enough, just get two cards or carry a way to offload the photo's.
Like you, I never found myself swapping cards between devices anyway.

Personally, I've found Olympus to take much better photo's than Canon camera's but that's just been my experence.
I like the features of this that make the 770 SW a almost perfect camera for bike use.

I have both the Olympus 720 sw and I just got the Canon G9.
Both are great cameras. To me the differance between the two is:
Canon can shoot in raw
It can shoot short video
It uses an SD card
And it uses a view finder. I'm kinda old school that way.
You cannot go wrong with either one.

The 770 SW can shoot AVI video so that is solved. I used to think I needed/wanted a viewfinder. We have it on our Sony P93A. I think one day, I'll actually look through it and see what it's like. :p: For a point and shoot, I've found myself never using the veiwfinder. If this were a DSLR, that would be whole other story and I'm not sure what the point of shooting RAW format is unless you're using DSLR but then again, I'm not a pro photographer and I've not had that training yet. I know you can do more with RAW but it also takes up a lot of memory card space and for most, JPEG is great.
Does the G9 have image stabilization like the 770 SW? Never mind, I just located that information.
The reason I posted this was for use on the bike. Waterproof, rugged, crush resistant, image stabilization, and a glare proof screen seemed like a bike use dream camera. My wife shoots from the back seat all the time now. I think the 770 would work out better since it looks like it has a bigger screen than the camera we have and the 770 screen is glare proof for use in sunlight.
Last Canon I had lasted 11 months, was never abused, and I had to 'fix' every photo it ever took. After it died, it was replaced with the Sony which has been abused and won't quit. Very rarely do I have to sharpen photo's coming off that camera and it 'fits' in your hand perfectly, even with gloves on. That being said, the Olympus puts out some nice features for bike use.
I'm just saying...:)

Yeah, this is kinda like the best bike, oil, tire, helmet issue.
I tell my students that worst camera is the one that sits on the shelf in the closet.
You get the camera that fits you....
Your budget, your needs , your hand, your eye, etc.The one that is comfortable for you so you'll use it.
For 15 years I had Nikon's, loved them and used the snot out of'em.
Then about 10 years ago I switched to Canon and I've been happy with them.
I've had gobs of point-n-shoots with varying degrees of success.
Cameras are much like everything else You get what you pay for.
We just went on a dual sport ride and 2 of us had G9's and I also had the 720 and all worked well and did what we bought'em to do.
Take pictures and have fun.

I own several different makes of cameras, and mostly use a Fuji F-10 because it does what I want. BUT, when I'm out riding, hiking or boating, I use an Olympus, for the simple reason that they're built like tanks.

i have a little point and shoot digital pentax that i can keep in my pocket. Problem is its really to small to get a good handle on with gloves on. I would also consider the chargers physical size. I hate packing extra

So how do you like the camera now that you have a chance to use it some?
Is the screen good and visible in bright sunlight?
How is the picture quality?
i like the waterproof abilities and ruggedness of the camera
