How many of you are still running your 28 amp alternator vs switching it out for a 40 amp and why?

On my 28 amp 1991, the only accessories are an Escort 8500 X50, CD player, or walkman. These draw less than 2 amps. You got to know your limitations. I don't have heated gear or high watt lights. If it gets too cold, its the Accord for me.

Hope I don't jinx myself....
I just turned 80,000 miles on my 93. I'm not running any high current accesssories, just a GPS, a CB, and now, LED auxillary turn signals and brake light.

I have owned two pre-96 ST1100s (current model is a 1992 ABS/TCS) and for some reason I felt compelled to upgrade both of 'em. I just run too much electrical gear not to have the power when I need it. Nor did I want to deal with the usual oil seal failures on the alternator, which were fixed with the air-cooled 96 model.

Just sold my 94. 72k miles and still had the 28 amp. The only thing I did with the system was to cut the stator connector out and spliced the wires together. The ST1100 list suggested inspecting the yellow connector and the VR Connector, and when I did I found arcing out of the back of the yellow connector. The wires at the connector on the alternator side were heat damaged from the arcing. I'm not sure I agree with some of the listers who are always warning to do the upgrade. I think very few people in Europe have done the upgrade. I believe they are less likely to have lots of farkles though so I don't know if that is a valid comparison. I have an article from a Britsh mag about an ST1100 courier bike with 266k miles on it and no problems with the charging system other then several batteries replaced. ;)

Thanks all for your responses.
I have found a 91 in showroom condition and had my mechanic give it a good inspection. The wiring and connectors are all in good shape, no signs of heat or brittleness and the testing of the output was excellent under load. I will be signing the check Saturday for the bike and will join this group of happy ST riders. Man, a ST1100 and a Goldwing, I should have about 300,000 miles to go! I hope to start meeting a bunch of you at upcoming events!
