View Full Version : 2009 Calendar Submissions

Now that the 2008 calendar has been put to bed, it's time to start collecting pictures for 2009.
PICTURE GUIDELINES
General guidelines can be found on STWiki (http://stwiki.notonthe.net) in the CalendarPhotoGuidelines (http://stwiki.notonthe.net/twiki/bin/view/General/CalendarPhotoGuidelines) topic in the "General" section. These will be updated through the year as I think of things to add.
For this year's calendar, pictures should be taken between Thanksgiving 2007 (November 22) and Thanksgiving 2008 (November 27, 2008).
SUBMITTING YOUR PICTURE
Because of the size restrictions on posting attachments, submissions are going to be handled a bit differently this year.
To submit a picture, send an email to st-calendar (at) notonthe.net, and include the following:
Your ST-O nickname/handle/alias
A description of the picture, including its location. Please include as much information as you can, including the names of landmarks in the picture and the nearest town. (For example, "US 75 overlooking ST-Owners Headquarters, Dallas, TX")
Your permission to publish the picture. If someone else took it, have them drop me a line with their permission. If your SO took the picture, decide who gets credit before submitting the picture.
The image, as an attachment. (See the guidelines.)
Please send one email per picture. I know it's tedious, but it will make getting them posted and organized a lot easier.
All submitted pictures will be posted here (http://st-gallery.notonthe.net/main.php?g2_itemId=894). Everyone is encouraged to post a scaled-down version in this thread for comments and discussion.
Post questions here or PM them to me.

OK, I'm getting this started off. Went for a ride today, not too long 176 miles, but I took in Mt. Laguna and then rode through the Anza Borrego Dessert State Park to Octillo.
All of these pictures were taken on the morning of 1/26/2008. They were taken on California State Route 1 (S1) also known as the Sunrise Hwy at two different pullouts both facing the Anza Borrego Dessert State Park (mostly east) near Mt. Laguna

OK, it's been a few days and Mark has had a bit of time to recover from the onslaught...
Took these pictures this afternoon on Mt. Helix in San Diego County. It's between El Cajon and La Mesa. I was pretty happy with the way some of them turned out so I thought I'd post a few. The full sized shots can be downloaded from here (http://www.dmulk.com/bikes/dteel/2008_02_07/).

I have a few questions to the panel....
What resolution (pixel by pixel) is a minimum recommendation?
I ask because most of my images are standard horizontal framing, but I had intended to use 'Shop to crop them into more panoramic shapes (like those I've linked to elsewhere from Death Valley). If I maximize resolution, composition is at best a compromise. If I can get by with something other than max resolution, I believe I can produce a more pleasing result.
Max resolution yields photos sized about 2580x2000 (conforming to the 1.29:1 standard).
Could I get by with something about half that size? Say 1290x1000?
TIA,
Jon

NightRDR,
I'm okay with downsizing for samples/viewing.
My concern is how big does the larger image supplied to Mark need to be?
I'm starting with images measuring 3008x2000. If I maximize image data when trimming to the 1.29:1 ratio, I get the 2580x2000 size I mention above. That is the maximum image data I can provide compliant with 1.29:1.
On the other hand, I'd rather have some freedom to recompose my images with PhotoShop, but I'd be losing some image data in the process. For instance, if I don't like 40% of the foreground and background vertically, I'm cropping away 40% of 2000 pixels, leaving only 1200 vertical pixels. That may yield a better frame composition, but would reduce the image size to 1548x1200.
Is 1548x1200 a workable image size for the calendar?
(I would still probably reduce even more for previewing purposes.)
TIA,
Jon

From the link that Mark started this thread with,
The aspect ratio of published images is 1.29:1. Panoramas or other wide formats don't work.
Leave about 5% of the width or height near the edges. Don't chop off the bottom of your wheels or place the bike at the very edge of the picture.
Shoot in the highest resolution your camera offers. The absolute minimum acceptable resolution for an image is 1024x768. Photos at that resolution will have to be incredibly sharp and be good
I believe this answers your question.

Thanks Dana,
Don't know how I missed that. As you can tell, I picked up on the 1.29:1, but missed that minimum size figure. Oddly, that size is 1.33:1.
I'll probably attempt to get decent composition at some resolution above that, but not at full size for the reasons I stated before.
Back to work I go....

Fred, I like your sunset photos but did you ever try some without the flash? I'm guessing that you are probably are using the flash to bring out some of the details of the bike especially since it is a dark color but one of the things it also brings out is all of your reflective material (tankbag, reflectors, bag on the back rack, etc...) To me, this is more of an annoyance and detracts from the photo IMHO.
P.S. I just noticed the other thread that you just started that has more photos. Looks like you were trying out your new Nikon flash. I hope I didn't spoil your fun!

After surpressing all kinds of rude and crude comments in rebuttal to your opinion I came up with a pretty good one... Here's the Editor of Rider Magazine's return email comment after I submitted the same photo to thier website gallery...
"Fred,
Thanks for sending the great photo of your ST. As you’re probably aware, the ST1300 won our sport-touring comparison in the December issue. It was a staff favorite that we reluctantly gave back to Honda last week. I’ll forward your photo and caption to our webmaster today, so it should be posted in our image gallery soon.

I got a few this weekend. Went to Buena Vista this Memorial Day weekend.
The mountain range in the back is part of the Sawatch Range that, includes the Collegiate peaks. Mt. Harvard is the tallest one in the shot, 14,240 feet.
Missed the million dollar shot by one day. The horse pasture at the the ranch we where visiting, had about 50 horses with.....approx 200 head of elk, that had come through just about sunset. Would have been an incredible picture.

Here's a shot of me riding Mulholland Highway, taken by a photographer named Paul Herold, kind of a west coast counterpart to Killboy? Yes I have permission to post this here and to submit it for consideration as a calendar shot. I like the way he blurred the background to give an impression of speed. The shot was actually taken at the hairpin turn coming up from the famous Rock Store, just below the overlook on April 20, 2008.

The first two look like a corn field to me, and unless I missed the mark, the third is of a mixture of grass, alfalfa and clover (good hay). Can't smoke any of them though Capt....hehe

Back to the thread at hand .... I was just amazed by the scenery. We, in the desert, have lost touch with grass and green things in general. I would love to ride in an area like that ....

You lost me Mark. I'm not sure what you trying to do? You mean just add the picture I adjusted for Georg? I guess you would need to embed it again using the "properties" of the picture and pasting in the file name?

Yup, just add the picture you adjusted. Seemed like I was able to do that before "maintenance" was done this morning. Guess I need to play a bit.

Awesome job on those shots Fred. I like the first one the best. Good job of holding still. I assume you used a 2nd curtain to capture the bike. How long was the primary exposure. I'm guessing 15 seconds or so.
Also curious how many attempts made it to the cutting room floor that you didn't post.
When I was taking photography classes I use to play around with affects like this all the time. I'll bet it was hard keeping the curious out of the way long enough to take the shots. I can see that you are in the last parking spot though, I guess that would make it a tad easier.

Excellent estimates Dana! You know your photo stuff! Yes... 2nd curtain slow sync flash with a 15 second exposure! You win the prize! LOL.
I dumped about half of what you see in the post as too dark, or out of focus.

Actually the sky looked exactly like that at the time of the shot. See the nice blue in the upper left corner. We were hurrying to avoid a thunderstorm closing on our position, you know with thunder and lightening? So the blown out sky is actually some graduated grey from the oncoming clouds proceeding the storm. Compare to the photos taken here (http://www.st-owners.com/forums/showthread.php?t=45752)and see (especially the first panaroma shot) that it was mostly a beautiful day for picture taking.
I never did much get into filters, maybe this is something that you can help me to learn how to use effectively Fred, I would welcome the opportunity. Yes my camera can accept an adaptor that will allow the use of filters to answer that question. Matter of fact I just ordered a filter kit that includes a UV, polarizing filter and a couple of others. We'll see how that works.

I should of my accurately said "blown out clouds". They have no detail at all in them; if they did it would so much more enhance your photo. I have noticed several of you pics in the past with this issue. Taken pics in the middle of the day can cause this a lot, but I know when your traveling you can't always pick your time and place.
I do like the photo very much, but thought how much better it would of been if you had moved the bike more into view and brought out more detail in the clouds. Good one Dana! I feel ya... I hate critics too! LOL.

Kempo, I don't carry a photographer in my pocket, only a camera! (Didn't save that much on my insurance. :D) Consider I rode _to_ each of those pretty spots to get the pics.
There are action shots at pushmountainpics.com (http://pushmountainpics.com), Sep 20, page 6, shots 456 thru 462. I think my body position is better than your's, too. :D
Also, White Pan Man, if you find the thread boring, read something else, or...
GO RIDE!!
There's more to life than motorcycles, and photography is part of it. I have a lot more shots of pretty landscape without motorcycles, and lots with people, camp fires, and motos only. My choice. Also my choice to share them as I see fit. Your choice to look or not, your choice to comment or not, my choice to rebut...
...or not.

HEY! Who got that way cool shot of a moose cross controlling an ST and leaning his body the wrong way????? :p:
Hey Toddly, get us a blow up photo so we can post it up for others and caption "don't cross control the bike like this." :D
Really, before 7PM your center of gravity (which any Marshal Arts practitioner knows) is in your chest area. That makes the position wrong since your head is so far away from the inside of the corner your chest is too. Meaning you aint really hanging off 'cause your center of gravity is canceling your arse out.
HOWEVER Kempos San Master..... after 7PM or so you can drink enough beer to shift the center of gravity into your lower extremities, filling your arse up with heavy liquid, thus overcoming your daytime center of gravity and making your position... wait for it... "CORRECT" given your newly weighted behind and tummy.
ONLY PROBLEM is after you drink the beer, you can't ride, so the position remains... incorrect :(
Oh well, I tried Bud  :D

May or may not be in the book but cross controlling is a fact that the superbike boys try and correct if you show up with it, and yes, to some degree your chest staying centered can cancel out your inside butt.

Thanksgiving is usually the deadline to submit pictures. After that, I have to dig through them all and produce the calendar. Because it occurs so late in the month and I like to get it to press in enough time for the holidays.
Because Thanksgiving falls a little late this year, I'm going to stop taking new pictures this weekend so I can gather them up and start sifting through them. If you have 'em, send 'em or post 'em. See the instructions at the beginning of this thread.

I culled down to these...beauty is in the eye of the beholder I suppose. I hope one or two are good enough to contribute to the calendar. :)

Thanks.
"4th image in post 133" is my desktop wallpaper.
"6th image in post 134" is just one of almost 20 in which the fog/clouds are streaming by. If'n anyone knows how to convert them into an animated GIF, it might be cool.

Jon, you have some really great shots, I don't think I need to wish you luck, I'm sure one of those will find it's way into the calendar. You look like you were loaded for bear, where were you headed?

Dana,
Thanks for the wishes (sorta, I guess).
Well the Death Valley photos were part of a government funded trip to/from Las Vegas:

I submitted 15 pics this year, hope one of'em makes it. Lots of competition.
A friend suggested I just do my own, but don't think it'd sell enuff. My pics are all too much alike (except the one of Mac on Old Oatman Road. :D)

A basic cafepress store account is free and you can do 1 version of a calendar with that. So, if you have the material why not.. you, as the owner, would get a discounted price for the calendar and if you did a different one each year, you could save them all.. I know.. NOW I suggest it.. lol.. would be cool to see a calendar of each year's rides.. you could even have 4 pics on a page if it was a very busy year which you tend to have..

Joe, can you tell us more?
Sure, if you go to cafepress and create an account
https://www.cafepress.com/cp/info/sell/learn
Then, you create a 'shop' and add products.. one product is a calendar, it will allow you to upload your images.
It's not the best interface but it's not too bad.

Here's a few from last summers trip out to the west coast. I emailed them last week, but just now got a chance to post them.
39131
Vermilion Cliffs, Arizona
39132
Golden Gate bridge
39135
Marina Park, San Fran
39134
Marble Canyon, Arizona
39133
Hoover Dam
It was a really good trip, just a little more laid back and not as hectic as last years.

Okay, folks, the calendar is now being worked on, so this thread is closed.
Look for the next "submissions" thread as soon as I'm done.
