HI everyone! Just ordered a '05 ST1300ABS on Monday, with a 7-10 day delivery. Cant wait! I also have a Yamaha FZ1 which is great for day trips, but I wanted something with a litte more protection for long tours.
I am planning a July trip to Alaska, and the ST should be great for those long days. I'll probably ship the bike to Seattle and ride back. So Howdy everyone, while I count the days to delivery!

Wow! What a great way to start. Wecome to the best ST group in the world. Get over to the ST-N site, register and vote for the ST1300 ASAP. We made it to the finals.

I may have been a might premature in my youthful enthusiasm. The final round has not started yet. :o:
When it does, vote early and vote often. :D

I thought I was going nuts. I went over there and was looking and looking and looking. Finally gave up trying to find it and came back here to find your last post. I glad it's not just me!

If anyone has found a black ST1100 front fender with custom pinstriping on it, out in the middle of Saskatchewan somewhere, please return it. I'll pay postage. :(

Drew, welcome, and enjoy that big beautiful :biker: ST... you won't be dissapointed! It is by far the prettiest and fastest color, all others say theirs is faster, but it's just jealousy talking :D

Ride safe,

But did you have fun on your Alaska trip?

Yeah, I know the bike's gonna get pretty filthy, but I bought it to ride. Probably will cover most of the lower front paint with 3M clear protective sheeting and install fender extensions and headlight covers.

We had great fun. 6 ST's and a CBR 1100 cruising Alaska for 10 days, what's not to enjoy? We even had mostly great weather, considering what you can get there. If it rains a lot, the going will be a lot tougher than what we experienced. Total we probably only had to ride 40 or 50 miles through mildly muddy conditions, out of a total of about 150-200 miles of gravel roads and construction zones. If you decided (I didn't) to do the haul road up to the Arctic Circle like a couple of our members did, that'll add about 400 miles of additional gravel road, that can become totally treacherous if it rains. Luckily for them, it didn't. Because of the salt-saturated mud packed into every orifice and crevice of my ST, it needed to be totally stripped of it's plastic and cleaned after the trip. If I had it to do over again, I would, and probably will someday.

It was a great experience, here's a few tips:
DO make sure you have all your reservations in place (unless you intend on camping) before you leave.
DO take lots of money.
DO take lots of bug repellant.
DO those things you talked about doing to your ST before you leave.
DO leave your Givi box at home, use drybags for packing instead. The Givi mounts and your frame will be subjected to lots of stress due to the extreme roughness of roads in places.
DO get a copy of Milepost and study it and use it for planning before you go.

Have fun, good luck!

No, but it would be a good idea. Lots of rocks flying about, especially if you get passed in a construction zone. :(

All I had was a Ventura headlight cover.

Thanks for the tips! I do have the Milepost and about 5 other books that I've been reading all winter. Since I will probably camp alot to save some money, I will pack light, like a backpacking trip. I will skip the haul road,(quite frankly, it does'nt appear to be all that scenic) and concentrate on coastal Alaska with a Klondike loop through Dawson City. If I have time, and good weather, the Demster Hwy to the Artic Circle may be in my plans, seems more scenic with far less truck traffic than the Haul road. Here's a loose itinerary that I have so far;

P/U bike from shipper in Seatle
SEA to port Angeles, Vancouver Is. to Port Hardy.
Ferry to Prince Rupert, up Stewart/Cassier Hwy to ALCAN. Over to Skagway, ferry to Haines, west to Seward.

Ride North to Denali, take Denali Hwy east, Delta Jct, Top of World Hwy to Dawson. Then south to the Alcan and down through the Canadian Rockies to Montana, then east home.

All is dependant on weather. If I run into a long predicted stretch of miserable weather I'll head south sooner and ride around the drier areas of BC and Alberta.

I plan about 2+/- weeks in Alaska, and 2+/- weeks for the ride south into Montana, and home to New York.

" west to Seward."

I don't believe there is a ferry that goes from Haines to Seward, unless a lot has changed in 2 years. You'll have to ride from Haines to Haines Jct, to Tok, to Anchorage, then down the Seward Hwy to Seward. Your other option would be: from Tok to Glennallen, then south on the Richardson Hwy to Valdez and pick up the ferry there, to Seward by way of Whittier.

Don't forget to pack along good raingear, too.

1st, sorry for the misinformation. Two of our guys did the Dempster hwy to the arctic circle, not the haul road. The Dempster can get pretty treacherous if it rains. If not, it's just a bunch of rough gravel road. Also cold up there, take warm clothes if you go.

Our itinerary was a little different. I rode from Seattle to Prince Rupert, then got on the ferry there and went to Skagway on the ferry. From Skagway, rode to Whithorse then Haines Jct, met up with the rest of the gang, then we rode to Valdez, Seward, Homer, to Denali N.P., Fairbanks, Dawson City via Chicken, to Whithorse, Muncho Lake, Whitecourt AB, home to Minnesota via Saskatchewan, Manitoba, North Dakota, etc. Stayed in motels the entire way.

The trip was great fun, made even more so by doing it with a bunch of other ST-riders.

Good luck on yours!

Rob, my first statement was vote early and vote often when I notified the membership of the ongoing contest. So :box1: me for the self-righteous hypocrite that I am. On the other hand I only voted once :spank1: , wiener that I am... :o:
On the plus side sport-touring.net had 15 new ST1300 owners register for membership and only one new FJR owner during the polling. :D I guess the FJR website was fully recruited last year. :crackup :crackup :crackup
On a more serious note, one member stated he was considering a new ST1300 but felt it was an old man's bike. The response was great. I was surprised that many felt the ST1300 was a very desireable ride. One even stated that the ST (and fjr :D ) were dream bikes (link is below). :hotpepper :hotpepper :hotpepper
