Has anyone tried the Honda 60/55W bulbs that fit the STs (Part# 34901-MC7-601AH)? Do they really fit in the weird Honda socket? Better illumination? I just orderd some to try. Hope they fit.

ServiceHonda shows $4.89 for the 34901-MC7-601AH.

$8.00 minimum shipping though.

It's worth a try for that!

Anybody tried an install of these yet? I just called over to my dealer and gues what? Three in stock! I had him put my name on two and will go over this weekend and try to grab them. Just wondering if I should waste any time trying to get them to fit if someone else has already tried and failed/succeeded.

For whats its worth - I installed 9003 Silver Stars last weekend - I just cut off the lower tabs and went ahead with the installation. No problems at all - they sat in the flange like they were meant for it, with no movement at all. The difference in light output is great (55/60 watts) - I don't understand all the hype about using shims because the flanged portion of the bulb sits in the recessed part of the lamp holder.

Why don't you guys e-mail www.sylvania.com and ask their excellent service reps. if they can match up a Silverstar lamp for you. You will probably need the actual numbers, wattage and manufacturer's type off the lamp though. If not cutting up a #9003 is the way to go. A Silverstar lamp will cost you $20.00+.

Bruce - I think the draw is that it may be "plug and play". No adapters needed. Readily available from a dealer. And at only $6 from my dealer and some money for Uncle Sam, fairly inexpensive. I'm heading out to pick them up right now.

Let us know if it works :D

Bad news on the "easy" replacement bulbs. The new ones are similar to the stock ones, but their tine placement is different. The stock bulbs are further apart and the new ones are probably more like replacement H4's. Here are a couple pics.

One interesting observance: the stock bulb seems to be at a slight angle in relation to the base plate. The new bulbs, and most H4's I've seen, are clearly square to the plate. I'm wondering if this is an anomaly, or are all the stock bulbs slightly angled to the plate?

Of course, since the thread title specifically designates this as an ST1300 trial, I should mention that I am comparing and performing this on an ST1100. Also, for those of you who are wondering, I paid $6.50 each over the counter plus tax.

Yep, Bought Silver Stars ($43.00 American) last month. Clipped the 2 bottom tabs and insert. Mucho bright light. My arms are scratched up and my hands cramped-but it worked fine.

Even if the "new" Honda bulbs are not plug and play, I might suggest that in cost savings alone, they are worth it. Only $10 to $15 a set would leave enough for a tank of fuel and maybe a slurpee compared to the Silver Stars.

Osram Silverstars in my ST1100 are way bright. Went in easy with the shims.

I have been using SS and or Cool Blues. A while back a CB went out. I had a bulb here from my Valk..The STock Honda P# 34901-MC7-601AH. It is marked 55/60. Sound familiar?

I clipped the 2 tabs and put it in. One side SS 55/60 other side Honda 55/60.

Looking at the lights up close, you can see the slight color difference. The SS is whiter. If you STep back and look, the Honda buld looks the same color BUT it is significantly brighter! Looking at the lights in the reflection of another vehicle you can see the Honda blub is indeed brighter. I believe it is because the Honda (a Japanese made STanley) has a different shape/length? base to filament. I am going to snap a pic as the sun goes down and see if the diff is visible by the camera lens. STay tuned.

The Honda bulb is on the left side of the bike. Both bulbs same watts but a huge price diff. You be da judge

HL is on low beam.

7/12/5. My STock Honda bulb finally pooped out. I inSTalled a Sylvania XtraVision 9003, readily available from an AP STore.
(right pic) The right lamp is STill the Sylvania SS and the left is the new XV. BTW I am shimless on the left and inSTall was a bit easier.
>Due to different back light conditions, to the digcam the SS looks really blue in the right pic. Also hard to compare Honda vs XV now that I'm shim free on one side.
I really think the Honda 34901 is better for the buck.

Don -- Thanks for the pics and observations. Did you use any shims? Or, just clipped the tabbs and insert? I'm ordering some items from CAST and am wondering if I need the shims. Looks to me like it would seat on the inset just fine (as mentioned above).

I use shims but laST year at WeSToc a fellow 1300 rider showed me his bike and he doesn't have shims and the bulbs fit fine. I looked real close and they are centered in the opening. I will no doubt dispense with the shims as the bulbs are changed.

The Silvania SS is not the same as the Osram SS. I believe the Sylvania SS has the blue coating that gives it that "whiter" look, but reduces light output.

The Osram SS is a clear bulb. But I would like to try Honda 60/55 bulbs when these go out.

For some reason, Don always stops sideways, when pulling his trailer. :D

Well, needless to say, no joy on the bulbs as far as a shimless solution. They are cheap and bright though. Basically H4s. Too bad. I got one to go in the left side with the ship and finally gave up on the right after my thumb started swelling. My shims seem to be too thick making the process of locking the wire spring almost impossible. Will try the right again when the swelling (and cussing) subsides.

The right side is giving me fits too but on unlocking the clip. I don't know how I got the left side done but I did.
