I took a ride-out (85 miles) this last Sunday afternoon for two reasons:-

1. Firstly, to enjoy the fine English Springtime weather; and

2. Secondly, to get just enough groceries from a nearby town's supermarket store to fill my new Bagster "Athena" tank bag. I wanted to see how the bag felt and positioned itself with a full (29 liter) cargo load.

Everything was going fine until I pulled into the store's gas station to re-fuel the STeed's tank. The good news is that rearward end clip-in attachments on the bag easily detach, which in turn means the bag can be swung up and pivot on the bag's forward swivel attachments to access the gas cap, thus avoiding the need to remove the bag completely and risk getting it dirty on an oily forecourt.

And now for the bad news! ....

.... When manoeuvring the bike at slow speed around the forecourt's pumps I had reason to lock the handlebars onto a full left-hand turn. Unfortunately, with the bars in this full LH lock position, the left grip's horn button comes exactly into contact with the corner of the bag's left-hand side strap container pocket. [Note that the bag has pockets on each side to store straps that enable the bag to convert into a back pack].

I attach a pic of the contact point, which I hope will help explain the position.

It was a bit disconcerting - and slightly embarrassing! - at the time to hear the horn blast off, just because I was manoeuvring a full LH turn. I quickly discovered that by yanking the bag down a little and to the left meant that this unwanted horn button contact could be avoided; but then the next contact point is the bottom of the windshield's rocker switch control, so that the windshield ends-up by lowering itself involuntarily.

My thoughts were that this might be quite a predicament, but I guess I'll need to deal with the issue by guarding these control buttons with my thumb when making a full-lock LH turn.

Is this is a design fault on Bagster's part?

By the way, I have Heli-Bar risers fitted, which means, of course, that my bar grips are not situated in the standard stock position. However, it does occur to me that the stock position might be even worse as far as this issue is concerned.

Thought you guys should be made aware of this 'snagette' that I've just accidentally discovered, especially as there's a group buy going on at the moment.

Thanks

There have been a few templates/designs floating around for a horn switch protector. I have the same problem with my Givi bag - but it hits both the horn and the windshield switch on the left, and the starter button on the right.
I've been thinking of making something similar for both sides for some time.

BC Rider - thanks for the idea, which should be just the ticket. Do you know if the pics of the "Claxon Protectiebeugel" were posted by:-

(1) A retailing manufacturer, in which case how do we go about buying this item?

or

(2) A brother ST owner from the Netherlands, who is just displaying his (or perhaps someone else's) innovative home-made work?

I could really do with one of those little switch protectors.

Thanks

Well Keith, you don't mention that when you had the bars at full left lock and the horn sounded that it startled you and the beaST went down on her right side. At least that's what would have happened to me in that situation.

Keith - the following was posted on the ST1300 US site sometime back in February 2004. I don't know if he is still selling, but he does include an email contact.

here is the original link to the quoted message below:

Did you notice that your windscreen went down while taking a left turn or that your horn started beeping while manouvering your bike? Due to the buttons being pushed by your tankbag while turning the wheel to the left, these things can happen.
I made a protectionbar that keeps these buttons free from being pushed by your tankbag. A welcome side-effect is that it's much easyer to find these buttons without looking at your thumb anylonger, wich improves security of course.

The price of this protectionbar is $ 20.00 (shipment excluded).
If you're interested, send me a mail: leppers@aurec.nl

Seems to me that I've also seen a template from one of our fellow board members (here or at the other site). I can probably find it if you want to make one yourself.

BC Rider - it's been a couple of months now, but I did pick-up on your hyperlink threads, and last night designed and made (with more than a little help from a very clever engineering-type friend) a Horn Button & Windshield Rocker Switch Protector, which is a hybrid version of the examples shown in your link(s).

So, from now on: There will be no more accidental sounding of the horn -or- lowering of the shield by the button and/or rocker switch making contact on my Bagster tank bag during a full LH lock turning manoeuvre.

This is a relief, and one less thing to worry about on next month's tour.

Cheers mate! - ;)
